Could Argo Win Just One Oscar?

Categories: Oscars

Meaning the Big One.

Argo has been picking up so much steam lately--it copped the PGA, the Golden Globe, and the SAG--that it's looking like a much healthier Best Picture Oscar candidate than it did when they snubbed Ben Affleck for a Best Director nomination.

As has been pointed out, Hollywood likes the film because it actually shows them in a good light--cooperating with the CIA to stage a fake film that will get Americans out of revolutionary Iran.

And how often is Hollywood shown in a good light, even by Hollywood itself?

If Argo cops the big Oscar, it'll be the first film to win that without being nominated for director since Driving Miss Daisy.

But Daisy won three other awards, so its copping the grand prize made a little more sense. A Best Picture that only wins one award is unheard of in modern times. It would be weird and in fact downright embarrassing!

So what else can Argo win?

Aren't score and screenplay supposed to go to Lincoln?

There are also a couple of sound nominations, but don't those categories usually go to louder films?

In that case, I'm predicting Argo to win editing, so they won't have to say "Winner of one Academy Award! For Best Picture!"

Yes, I have a lot of free time.

The ending of Argo was so over the top,, i knew it had to be fake.. googled the real story and the real hostages said leaving Iran was a piece of cake, no one even glanced at them when they got on the plane.

Michael, do you think Oscar voters will actually watch the documentaries now that they're receiving screeners for the first time? It used to be that voters weren't allowed to vote in this category unless they physically showed up and saw the documentaries in a theater. Now the entire Oscar community can vote even though few of them will likely see these serious films. More than ever, it will be a social popularity contest based on buzz and friendships. You have a lot of friends (both living and deceased) in David France's How to Survive a Plague. Does that make you recuse yourself or shout your support from the roof tops? (Or do you perchance  have another favorite?) If David won, he would get the chance to address a billion people, and  it would bring AIDS back into public consciousness. This would not be a bad thing now that young gay men are increasingly having unsafe sex.

As for Grand Hotel and Mutiny on the Bounty, that was A LONG TIME AGO!!!!!! They didn't have all those other categories, like sound design etc.

Doubtful, but it could happen.  GRAND HOTEL (1932) and MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY won the best picture Oscar but no other Oscars. (In fact, best picture was all G.H. was up for!)  I think this only-Oscar-was-for-best-picture last happened with BOUNTY.

Mike: Because you're generally so obsessed with the best actress and supporting actress categories, you may not realize that winning the best editing Oscar is generally the precursor to the same movie later (in the lonnnnnng evening) winning the best picture nod.

No nominations for the Woody Allen movie? It wasn't THAT bad.
