Jodie Foster's Coming Out Speech: My Thoughts

Categories: Gaaaaayyyyyy

On tonight's Golden Globes awards, special honoree Jodie Foster gave the most defiant almost-coming-out speech I've ever heard.

It was sort of a coming out mixed with an apologia for not coming out combined with an explanation that she supposedly has long been out (at least to everyone around her), wrapped up in a blaring plea for privacy, and topped with a retirement-from-acting speech.

And on top of all that she sprinkled a lovely thank you to her ex partner and coparent Cydney Bernard.

I'm still trying to figure it all out (especially since, where I saw it, there was a weird sound glitch that cut out what she was saying for about 10 seconds--though I looked it up later).

All I can say is I love Jodie's work and understand the pressures she's been through since child stardom. Also, I'm glad she never faked an opposite-sex partner or tried to convince the public she was straight.

But instead of this cockamamie speech, she could have just said "Yep, I'm gay." Twenty years ago.

Jodie Foster is the gayest non jeiwsh lesbian in Hollywood. She doesn't need to come out anymore than Liberace did. She wants to eat Kirsten Stewart all night long as well. I would actually pay money to see those two gays go at it

For that rambling and incoherent speech she'll never get a Golden Glib, but damn, who's the doctor who tightened that jawline!

Duh, Musto, 'cause like Jodi is a COWARD!  Plus she doesn't have to do ANYTHING that she doesn't want to as her films play up the standard liberal Hollywood simple-minded feminist PC victimization trope (usually Jodi shacked-up w/some young-super-pretty-girl/child who she is looking to protect while being victimized by MEN who wish to get them for whatever twisted pscyho-sexual complex MS FOSTER deigns to project onto the big screen).  I.e., she is really untouchable, so why don't you just take your outing campaign and pick on somebody your own size.  YOU'RE WASTING YOUR TIME WITH THIS CHICK!  She's is totally worthless.

Hey, if that's what Jodie's gotta do to make people forget she directed "The Beaver" while publicly defending its racist homophobic misogynist star, Mel Gibson, that's her decision.

Nope, hookers in the shitter.   Butthole rings, poems in the air, smoke and $50 dollars of ultimatum.

An antidote to Mr. Musto's crassness. A far more elegant and thoughtful opinion from Mr. Lowder of Slate:

Yeah, that sound "glitch," just as she was about to make her proclamation--I was picturing the 7-second delay guy on the button getting panicky, thinking, 'Oh my GOD..she's going to say the 'L' word.....CLICK!"  Was that really a technical glitch?  Seemed like strange timing for such a thing to happen...or am I being a Anti-Lesbian Conspiracy Theorist (and never mind that "grassy knoll")!?

Also,  what was up with the look on Mel Gibson's face?  Was he drunk, high or about to throw up?

I liked her joke about how next she is suppose to create a fragrance and get a reality show.  Also, was Cydney there?  It seemed to me that she was looking at her when she was referencing her but the cameras cut to her sons.

Perhaps being honored with what is regarded as a "lifetime achievement" award at age 50 signaled to Jodie that Hollywood recognized her amazing body of work but also serves (unintentionally) as a climax to a career.

The Cecil B. Demille Award has been presented since 1952 and only three recipients have been younger than Jodie at the time of their award. ..and the most recent of those was in 1967! I imagine being notified that she was this year's recipient set off a wide and varied list of thoughts, memories, questions, and self-reflection. Her acceptance speech may have been more for her own ears, and we were privileged to overhear. Covering so many important topics -- from her childhood entrance into the profession, through her formative years and into adulthood, privacy, family, sexual identity, a parent's illness, loneliness and the uncertainty of the direction of her career post "lifetime" achievement -- is certainly a lot to process.

As for " the end of one era and the beginning of something else", I think it is her way of stating she will do what is right for her, whether it is acting in smaller independent films, directing, writing -- or in causes in which she believes.

Backstage afterward, she clarified for reporters: "I could never stop acting. You'd have to drag me behind a team of horses. I'd like to be directing tomorrow. I'm more into it than I have ever been." As for why she chose this place and time to discuss her private life, Foster explained backstage: "The speech kind of speaks for itself. ... It's a big moment. I wanted to say what's most in my heart."

So, no matter what it all really meant, let's just say " Congratulations and thank you, Jodie Foster for an incredible career in which you gave us so much.. and gave up so much of your own life to do so."

I liked it, but I did feel like I was deciphering code the whole time. She also seemed to suggest her mother had dementia??

@Nicole_B"An antidote to Mr. Musto's crassness"

Your perceived "crassness" is Mr. Musto's..."We know it's an 'open secret'...settle the question."  The "vague-ness" helps no one...esp. the person in question...as my grandma would say it "shit or get off the pot."

Wait! before the trolls "crucify me"...(I don't care,actually)...I'm talking about the "out" to the insiders...yet, "posing/vague" to the outsiders"...THAT serves no purpose these days.

@Gregorama I'm not so sure it was a glitch, but a "dramatic pregnant pause" to the  SINGLE! punchline...as it were.

P.S. - Long time no see, Gregorama!!

@justin_case3 Yes, I heartily agree with the "talking to herself" aspect...also, I sorta got the "y'all who know me, have known it for years...but I don't want to be the poster child either...to everyone else."  And mama could've been part/a lot of the reason?

Did you actually read the article I posted a link to? More importantly, do you understand what it's saying? I hold onto the belief that people have the right to present their selves and identities in whatever way they would like to to people, so long as it isn't harmful or impinges on someone else's freedom. Who says Jodie Foster owes you or the gay community anything? The simple-mindedness of Mr.Musto's opinion on how and when Jodie Foster should have come out is the same terrible message the LGBT community sends out to the world: that people should be forced to come out. Disgusting.

Hey Savvy...yes, I started a "day-job" that blocked the VV website...grrrr....but I figured a workaround!  Glad to be back!  I don't know if  it was a "global" thing, or maybe it just happened in the NYC cable broadcast, but there was about a 10-second "glitch" right in the middle of her speech, where the sound was completely cut--exactly as it sounds when they censor someone in a live broadcast (7-second delay).  It was weird....I was left wondering, "What did she say that was so filthy?" ....I think that's what Michael alluded to as well.

Also, in re. Gcindc & Mel Gibson's face:  Isn't it horrifying how all those years of being a hateful asshole have left his face looking like a clenched fist?  Didn't he listen when his momma said "your face is going to stay like that if you keep that up".  He looks positively insane now.  Pretty awful considering how (circa about 1988), I couldn't imagine anyone better looking than him, male or female.

P.S. -  You hadda love Amy's last word of the broadcast...."We going home with Jodie!"  PERFECT!

SavannahMontgomery

@Nicole_B And after it all...she sorta says (acting/directing/retiring???)...she wouldn't mind appearing on 3.000 screens...or fewer... in the future...cover your bets more???

SavannahMontgomery

@Nicole_B Yes, I did read and "understand"it..."she’s been essentially unguarded about her lesbianism for some time"...got it!  BUT the "quibble" I have about it is the "buttering the bread on both sides!" that that article is trying to make....yer either "in" or "out"...when "everyone, [the people you know] knows otherwise, you're just being "a little bit pregnant."

SavannahMontgomery

@Gregorama I know...at that same time, I considered him "playfully cute"...not sexually, but 'fun'....yeah, we'd 'flirt' but not go all-the-way.
