The Hollywood Reporter listed the top 20 of the year a few days ago, but let's zoom in on their big 10--the ones that really rocked the box office, a handful of them going over the billion mark!

Bear in mind that some of these epics are still playing, so they'll be racking in even more dough. (I've updated the figures when possible.)

And kindly realize that every single one of the 10 monster money-makers is a sequel, prequel, mashup, and/or franchise film!

Not one of them was a completely original creation.

Maybe if Amour had been titled Amour 5: Breaking Dawn At The Continental Drift, it'd be up there on the list.

Here are the winners:

10. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. $562.8 million [Update: It's now past $676 million and growing. It's a hard Hobbit to break.]

9. Men in Black 3. $624 million

8. The Hunger Games. $686.5 million

7. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted. $742 million

6. The Amazing Spider-Man. $752.2 million

5. The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 2. $778.2 million

4. Ice Age: Continental Drift. $875 million

3. Skyfall. $978 million [Update: Since the report came out, this film has cracked the billion mark and it will make lots more. I'm shaken and stirred.]

2. The Dark Knight Rises. $1.08 billion

1. The Avengers. $1.51 billion

You can't go wrong underestimating the American public.

Yes...franchises always do (more) better overseas..they know the basic story already...and truth be told, "regular (middle class and lower) foreigners" don't do the "arthouse" films we swoon over.

Amazing. Maybe Skyfall will emerge as number one when all the dust is settled.
