Florida Wants More Gays!
And they already have more than Ikea on Super Bowl Sunday. (Yes, that tired joke again.)
See, I went to a Florida LGBT tourism reception the other night at Humphrey's at the Eventi Hotel and was told by Richard Gray of the city's Convention and Visitors Bureau that the number one air route in America these days is New York City to Fort Lauderdale! More than NYC to L.A.!
"And what awaits the gays in Lauderdale?" I asked (as if I didn't know.)
"Over 200 LGBT businesses," Gray replied. "Gay neighborhoods like Victoria Park and Wilton Manors, which we decorate and landscape."
Also a big dance club called the Manor, plus bars like Tropics ("for older men and their admirers") and New Moon ("a big lesbian bar". For big lesbians, I guess.)
And why the surge of gay life in Lauderdale (aside from the mass exodus from Miami Beach)?
"After Hurricane Andrew," Gray informed, "we had a lot of people move from the Keys and Dade County to Fort Lauderdale."
That was nice, but at this point I wasn't even listening. I was on my cell phone, booking a banquette at Tropics!
