Liza Didn't Think She'd Get The Oscar

At last night's Warner Bros. Home Entertainment/TCM presentation of Cabaret at the Ziegfeld, Liza Minnelli said she thought Diana Ross was going to win the Oscar for Best Actress of 1972, for Lady Sings The Blues.

"So I'd adjusted to that," she explained.

"They said my name, and my father [Vincente Minnelli] screamed so loud that I still have tinnitus!"

Joel Grey won Best Supporting Actor that year, and told last night's crowd that he didn't expect it either. He thought Al Pacino would get it for The Godfather!

Interestingly, Larry Hagman was a neighbor of Grey's and told him to just forget about the competition and enjoy the Oscar night.

When Grey got home that night, he found a statue in front of his house saying "To the best fucking neighbor I've ever had."

"Larry was afraid I'd come home empty handed," said Grey, mistily.

Damn, I'm really gonna miss J.R.!

You are all crazy! Diana Ross gave a much better performance than Liza Minnelli in "Lady Sings The Blues." That was a truthful, raw, transformational and multi-layered dramatic presentation that captures Diana at her best....The Oscars always get it wrong!! The Academy should award people when they deserve it not after-the-fact! If Judy Garland should have won The Oscar when she was alive, then don't punish Diana by giving it to Liza (Judy's daughter). That type of racism is just what Billie Holiday experienced in her lifetime and was aptly depicted in "Lady Sings The Blues." Blacks have always had to go the extra-mile to prove themselves worthy to Whites people.  In 1972-73, the industry was (and still is to a certain extent today) very racist! To award Diana Ross for Best Actress in 1972 would of caused many White People to have a heart attack! Unfortunately, the industry has to wait until 2004 to give Halle Berry the Oscar for Best Actress (the only Best Actress Award given to an African American female in the history of The Oscars) for having raunchy sex with White Actor, Billy Bob Thorton in "Monster's Ball." Unfortunately, that is the sad truth.  What a crying shame!

I wouldn't be surprised if Cabaret came really close to winning BP. Bob Fosse beat Coppola for Best Director. Unfortunately we'll never know because the Academy refuses to release vote totals.

Compare the two movies and you'll see that "Cabaret" is much more artistically solid than "Lady Sings The Blues." Plus there's the great subtext of Liza winning the award that her ma deserved but never got.

Liza won over Diana, Cicely Tyson, Maggie Smith (Travels with My Aunt), and Liv Ulmann.

Sorry Joel, but Pacino SHOULD have won for "Godfather" - he was amazing.

Diana lost a lot of mojo because Berry Gordy promoted her too much and there was a backlash. Plus Cabaret was a better movie.

@bethesda Yet, Ross was soo un-Ross...I was hoping she'd snag it...then they put her in "The Wiz." Stephanie Mills shoudda done it...though not with that NYC re-imagined as OZ.
