The Most Popular Song At Marie's Crisis Piano Bar

Marie's Crisis is the long-running piano bar at 59-Grove Street, where the most popular tunes usually include numbers from Gypsy and A Chorus Line.

But the other night, I dropped by and the song that drove the crowd especially crazy with delight was Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody!"

Not a show tune at all!

That's the elaborate, outlandish 1975 number which veers from ballad to operetta spoof to hard rock, with famous sections from "Easy come, easy go" to "Mama, just killed a man" to
stuff about Scaramouche, the fandango, Galileo, and lots of other nutty references.

Freddie Mercury did a brilliant job with the vocals throughout, and the wall of sound at the center is astounding moment in rock.

The song is a three-act opera unto itself, and one of the most original things to hit the charts in decades.

And when pianist Franca Vercelloni dove into it the other night, the crowd started becoming euphoric, singing along with every word and even jumping up and down and dancing in circles.

Watch out, Gypsy. Get offa Queen's runway!

It works because it works best as a "group" number, meaning there's something for every vocal range...and it's fun!

The last couple of times I was at Marie's the crowd seemed to be a majority of straight suburban types. I didn't stay for long. Maybe it's me, but it seems like it has changed from the old days

In my day it was "Corner of the Sky," unless a brilliant pianist called (if memory serves) Sam Austin was playing, in which case it was his killer version of "Blue Champagne."  But then again, I'm an Old.

There was a Queen show in London, but it never came to Broadway. But yeah, it's the closest thing to a show tune that rock ever produced.

@PhilNY How true!  The last time I was there, one section was taken up by "ninja mommy dykes" who literally tried to give me the bum's rush when I dared to take an open seat...not that I was taking a seat away from their group, mind you.  Momma,Mia!!

@SavannahMontgomery I take partial blame. I used to take people there because I loved it so much. Others must have too. I learned from that when you find something you really love, don't spread the word. Keep it to yourself.
