Triumphant Oscar Night For Two Mature Divas

Categories: Oscars

Shirley Bassey was masterful singing "Goldfinger" as part of the James Bond tribute on tonight's Academy Awards.

She did the song with measured tones, taking her time, and going for the gold (finger).

She really throated it out, and by the end, as I was sitting there thinking "Will she hit the note?" she struck it like a gong.

A triumphant moment for Shirley and she soaked in the standing ovation like a true diva.

And the other great, mature star who will surely kill 'em tonight?

The lady below. She's going to sing "The Way We Were" for the In Memoriam tribute.

It makes perfect sense since she was close with Marvin Hamlisch--and heck, I bet she hung with Andy Griffith too.

The Way We Were wasn't Evergreen. (Paul Williams is still alive.)

I didn't care for Les Miz but i thought when they all came out and sang was the musical highlight, even Crowe.. Loved babs.

THAT, ladies and gentleman, is a diva!  That word is so misconstrued and inaptly applied to any flash-in-the-pan with an attitude.  Shirley Bassey was un-fucking-believable on the Oscars.  You're so right...I think we were all assuming she'd leave out that ultimate wailer of a note....but uh-uh.  She NAILED it!  Most belters of her ilk (and there ain't many) end up with their voices in tatters by that age.  Genetics? Great technique?  Raw, ungodly talent?  All of the above?  I'm thinking so!  Unforgettable....and the highlight of the night, hands down (sorry, were fab, too!)

Something was off with the sound for both Adele and Barbara-neither seemed in good voice, but the mic needed to be pushed way up in volume.  Also, when Seth and Kristin sang at the end, it was hard to hear many of the lyrics.  Shirley slayed--OMG! She's 76 years old--go Diva!
