Bye, Bye Bonnie Franklin

She played a Broadway gypsy in the 1970 hit musical Applause and managed to get noticed even though Lauren Bacall was filling the stage with her throaty star turn.

She was Ann Romano on the smash TV series One Day at a Time (1975-84) on which she dealt with two growing daughters and a terrible hairdo, somehow managing to give "cute" a good name in the process.

And years later, I saw her cabaret act and was at first stymied by the fact that she didn't include lots of biographical material and career tidbits the way everyone else does, but then came to admire the fact that she was just saying "This is me. Hear me sing."

She has died, as a result of pancreatic cancer.

"So up on your feet, somewhere there's music playing."  Loved this show, and the theme song.

I loved that hairdo! It worked perfectly for her, or maybe I mean her character. And when you remember some of the other looks from that era...

As a 14-year-old in 1970, I watched the Tony Awards on TV because they were giving a tribute to Barbra Streisand. I knew the Tonys were Broadway's version of the Oscars, but I knew little about the nominated plays and musicals.  And then Bonnie Franklin and the gypsies came out to perform all 10 minutes of "Applause," I was hooked. I couldn't wait for the Original Cast Album to come out.   Bonnie Franklin really lit up the stage that night.

"Nothing I know...brings on the glow...like sweet applause."   My sympathies to her friends and family.

Awwwwwww, no.

I can still hear her singing Eve's "Halloween Night" version of "But Alive."

And you are right on the money about her appeal.

"Cute" without the sugar-coating.

I'm surprised that this news really upsets me.
