Annette Funicello, RIP

Categories: Celebs

The queen of the Mickey Mouse Club, the singer of "Pineapple Princess," and the star of Beach Blanket movies, Annette Funicello was a small, dark bundle of good cheer whom America anointed as a sort of human good luck charm ever since she started as a child star.

The cheeriness covered up some of the darker realities of the 1950s and '60s, but it was always entertaining, and Annette was one of those well liked people whose persona seemed to actually match their real selves.

She has died at 70, after a long struggle with multiple sclerosis.

Many people might well be more upset by this than by Thatcher's death, but it would be tacky to compare.

Can't believe I still remember this line:
"In America everybody 'digs' but nobody carries a shovel."

Annette as exchange student Gina Minelli on 'Make Room for Daddy' Season 6, Episode 19 'Gina from Italy' (9 Feb. 1959)

Disney was a real shit head, he made her promise when she left to do the beach movies that she would wear a one-piece suit.  Don't know if she stuck to that, but I love her vocal with the Beach Boys "The Monkey's Uncle."

Annettte was my first crush on an older girl. Thank you, sweetheart.

"We're the Mousekateers,

We wanna say hello and give three cheers

For all of you who see us

Every day -- you're okay!

So welcome to our Mousekaclub and

By the way -- While you're here, you're all the guests

Of The Merry Mousekateers!

We'd like to introduce ourselves to you

So proudly put on your Mouseka-Ears --

It's  time to meet --

The Mousekateers!"

And ANNETTE was always first, in the intros and in our hearts.

Does anybody remember her Mouseka-Serial, "Annette," where she was a country girl in the Big City who gets accused of stealing Roberta Shore's pearl necklace?

Right up there with "Spin & Marty" and "Corky and White Shadow."

As PhilNY says, she was an icon for so many of that generation, my wonderful sisters being three of them! First the Mickey Mouse Club and then movies, Jif Peanut Butter commercials, and beyond. Always remember her as a beautiful, cheerful, and good person. My thoughts are with her family. She'll always be MY Pineapple Princess!

If you go on You Tube, and see a video of Annette done recently, by her husband, and how agonizing her life was, you'll know she is in a much better place, be it Heaven, Disneyland,or the Beach. And she died in Bakersfield, CA. - if you've ever been there, you would do anything to get away too.

She was an icon of my childhood. My brother had a huge crush on her (alas he is gone too). At the time I was crushing on Tim Considine and Tommy Kirk.

@PhilNY Walt Disney called Tommy Kirk into his office and without mincing any words, told him "you had better start liking girls or else!"
