Singer Michelle Shocked said some controversial things in concert recently, which caused the cancellation of other concerts.
So she staged a sit-in at one of those sites--in Santa Cruz--making a statement by covering herself in medical bandages and putting duct tape on her mouth, while sporting a very chic disposable safety suit.More »
The message has gone out, from poet Scott Hightower:
"If you eat at Chick-fil-A, you are supporting a hate organization that opposes the civil liberties of women and LGBT people.
"As a gay man, I am deeply offended that this is on our campus. Anyone who supports Chick-fil A supports HATE."More »
Who knew that the Desperate Housewife would turn out to be such an articulate advocate for human rights?
Last week, she was on the front page of the Wall Street Journal with the headline "Eva Longoria's Next Role, Hispanic Activist in Washington." Said the article, "Her role reaches beyond fundraising and speechmaking and into policy and strategy. She urged Mr. Obama to make a key change in immigration policy last year."
Longoria elaborated her views to George Stephanopoulos on This Week, explaining, "I'm trying to do my part as a citizen and my part as a Hispanic and as a woman and as an American. So, you know, I enjoy it. I think everybody should be civically engaged in a level that would affect policy. That's the point; that's how our government is set up."
So true. And Longoria seizes the chance to elaborate her views on immigration:More »
Well-known singer Lesley Gore and I are best friends.
Well, I might be exaggerating a little. She called me once. And also I know her girlfriend Lois.
And now, Lesley is behind one of the best videos of this whole election season.
In it, Lesley's hit "You Don't Own Me"--an early feminist anthem about a girl who doesn't want to be a boy's piece of chattel--is lipsynched by a whole batch of females (some famous), interspersed with angry facts about the way Romney wants to take over women's right to their bodies while hoping to overturn Roe vs. Wade.More »
This image will be everywhere for Fashion Week.
What can I say?
I'm as speechless as I am at the forefront of the photo.
They brush, gargle, and smooch, to make a point against "chicken with hate."
There's even some serious ass groping going on.
And it's all very clever and funny until...More »
Yesterday I urged you to go to a Starbucks today to show support for a place that's pro-same-sex marriage.
It pained me to beg people to patronize a business that's gentrified formerly interesting neighborhoods with overpriced lattes.
But they have positive views on this particular topic, and a rally of support was important as a rebuke to the dummos who lined up to support Chick- Fil-A as flag-waving patriots for being so brave as to feel gays don't deserve equal rights.
I never thought I'd say that--I detest overpriced lattes consumed by slacking hipsters--but the pro-Starbucks day planned for tomorrow is intended as a show of support for a chain store that's backed same-sex marital rights.
Sometimes it's just so easy to make a deft statement.
