You think the (Double) Standard Hotel was moronic for telling a guy with a ladies' bag that he had to check it because it wasn't gay night?

Well, get a load of what William Angel Bailey (Jada Valenciaga) wrote on Facebook about an attempt to go to Pulse karaoke bar on West 41st Street.

"Calling all gay, lesbian, transgendered, bisexual, or ANYONE who is a supporter:

"Last night I tried to go to a friends birthday party at PULSE in drag before I had to be at work. I was not allowed in after being told by the bouncer that 'they don't accept my kind' and following that he proceeded to call me a stripper and say that they have a dress code.

Seventeen Magazine Is Being Protested Today!

Julia Bluhm
For Photoshopping its spreads!

Just about any publication on earth could be accused of that, but in this case, the protest is about demanding that young girls' bodies are shown as is, so as not to promote eating disorders or other self-esteem issues.

Of course, the spreads consist of models who don't exactly reflect regular looks anyway, but apparently they're still retouched to take some poundage off. There's no such thing as "too thin" in a lot of these youth mags.

The protest's official statement:

Boy George got wind of a strange flood of idiotic tweets using his name this weekend, all salacious and stupid and illiterate.

Things like "Boy George loves ya c**k" (asterisks mine) and "Boy George fancy ya ass" as well as other dumb stuff tweeted to him to rankle his cankles.

Or as he explained it to a friend:

The Dumbest Thing I've Read About Occupy Wall Street

Categories: Activism

220px-Wallst14occupy.jpg

Trolling the gossip boards as I'm wont to do for a living, I came across the dumbest of many idiotic anonymous comments about Occupy Wall Street, the growing grassroots movement that takes aim at the corruption in our financial system and the way it's wreaked havoc on Americans' well being.

The commenter had the nerve to dredge up the lazy, old, pathetic barb:

Update On My Atlantic Bank Travesty

Categories: Activism

atlanticbankofnewyork.png

Below, I wrote about being forced to take out a checking account at Atlantic Bank (which is tied to New York Commercial Bank) in order to get a certain CD rate.

They said I could just put a dollar in there -- which I did -- and there'd be no fees and penalties on the account, it could just sit there.

Well, yesterday I got a letter saying they were charging me fees for not having two transactions a month in there -- a new rule they hadn't told me about!

And they would continue to charge fees if I didn't make the account "transactional"!

The update is ...

Activism Is Hot Again! Long Live Generation Outrage!

Whenever people are complacent and have most of the things they need, they generally don't protest that much.

It takes a jolt to ignite their asses onto the street to fight for their lives, whether it be the beginning of ACT UP in the '80s, the Million Man March in '95, the anti-war protests under Dubya's administration, or the public outcries against the Mormons after Prop 8 passed.

Bravo to the "Occupy Wall Street" protesters who've been camped out in Lower Manhattan, screaming about how Financial District greed destroyed the economy.

While we're at it, let's also rail against ...

Vito Russo Documentary Makes The New York Film Festival

Categories: Activism

@mx_600.jpeg

Vito Russo was the film scholar who wrote the benchmark book The Celluloid Closet, but he was also a fiery Act Up activist who changes minds and moved things forward during a particularly dire time in gay life.

I was honored to be a talking head in Jeffrey Schwarz's documentary about Vito (I respected the man -- and, besides, Vito was one of a handful of people who congratulated me when I got this job; everyone else must have been deeply jealous).
