Skipper'll Never Go Away Again: Carol Channing In Concert

Categories: Carol Channing

Before the parade passes by, you'd better catch Carol Channing in Concert Starring Richard Skipper, who's well known for ebulliently capturing the sibilant, wide-eyed wonder of one of Broadway's platinum treasures. (Wings Theatre at 154 Christopher Street, through February 16). Rather than ask Harry Winston to tell me all about it, I contacted Skipper himself and asked three crucial questions.

Q: What is the secret to being a Carol Channing impersonator?

Skipper: I don't like to think of myself as an "impersonator," but rather a "tribute artist." I approach my work from an actor's point of view. Rather than giving a caricature or just the visual, I try to present the "entire package." . . . I have also become good friends with Carol and have had the luxury of spending time with her. I approach Carol with the UTMOST respect and love! It is never parody and/or mean-spirited.

Q: Not to be mean-spirited, but do you think the wonderful Carol has gotten to show tremendous range in her career?

Skipper: Carol has an amazing range! If her career had not gone in the direction it did, I think she would have been a great Shavian actress. She appeared as Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion, she did The Millionairess.

Q: But what the hell is Skidoo? (Hint: it's a weird little 1968 psychedelic comedy with Carol as the wife of hitman Jackie Gleason.)

Skipper: Carol refuses to acknowledge that film, so I'm going to follow suit!

Q: OK. I guess it's a Ski-don't. Thanks, Richard. Break a wig!

I was ashamed to admit it in the actual item, but I happen to love Skidoo. It's one of the best good/bad movies ever created, and Carol's crooning of the nonsensical title "tune" to a befuddled Jackie Gleason is something for the ages.

And she's wearing a Sgt. Pepper type uniform while doing it! "Skidoo, skiddoo, between one and three there's a two!" Saw it ages ago at Film Forum 2nd billed to the Kamp Klassic "The Big Cube" - the audience was hooping non-stop through Lana and tee-heeing through Carol. My friend fell asleep right before the infamous nude football scene.

Skidoo is #1! Carol is also #1. I saw Richard Skipper's promo tape. As you might guess from the photo above, it was no good. Maybe he should do Tammy Faye Baker instead?

Miss Understood says:

Skidoo is one of my favorite films. The Rudi Gernreich fashions are to die for! Ms. Channing looks amazing throughout, you even get to see her strip to her underwear in front of Frankie Avalon. I love Carol inside and out but I do think she should give the film a second chance. While it's appeal may be a bit accidental, it's an amazing time capsule of it's era.

Not to see Richard Skipper's show at the Wings Theatre will prove to be a grievous error. GO!

Beth Maher says:

Tammy Flu (above) is way off base. I've seen Richard Skipper perform a number of times and his tribute to Carol Channing is incredible. His impersonation of Carol is dead on, his energy is huge, his improvisational skills are phenominal, and he respects and honors Ms. Channing through it all! In fact - I know that Richard and Carol are good friends. So - Tammy Flu - if you think Carol is #1 - you might ask HER what she thinks of Richard Skipper. I'm absolutely sure she'll tell you that he is #1 as well.

After reading the comments that have been posted I find the need to respond to one in particular. I have recently have had the pleasure to see Richard Skipper in concert as Carol Channing at the Wings Theater and found it to be the most tasteful and family oriented show, that I brought my 13 year old son to see him and he enjoyed him as well. As for Richard Skipper as Carol Channing he has captured her essence and personality and style keep up the great work. There should be more shows like yours out there for the whole family.

I LOVE RICHARD SKIPPER . Saw Richard at the Wings Theatre as Carol Channing. He was fabulous and I know for a fact that Richard is Carol's FAVORITE tribute artist. I know why. He is the BEST ever.
