The Latest Celebrity Mel-Down: Mel Brooks Hates Ben Brantley!

Mel Gibson hates Jews, but Mel Brooks hates Ben Brantley! At a New York Times Arts & Leisure week panel last night, ironically enough, the Young Frankenstein inventor spent most of his time onstage screeching about how the Times critic should be whipped with a Borscht belt, even talking over his fellow panelists like Roger Bart and Susan Stroman to make that monstrous assertion. The 2000 year old man—I mean the CREATOR of the 2000 Year Old Man—attacked Brantley for mentioning YF's select bunch of $450 tickets (Mel feels that point has been irresponsibly blown up), for writing that he only laughed three times ("I happen to know there are four big laughs," nyuck nyuck), for claiming the songs sounded too similar ("That shows a profound ignorance. . ." etc., etc.), and for not kissing his ass (“I deserve a salute!”). I found the old Jew endearing, in a semi-insufferable sort of way—which is more than Mel Gibson would think of him—and I will have more to say about it in the column, if he'll let me get a word in edgewise.

Ryan Raftery says:

while it is safe to say that ben brantley will never have a theatre named after him or be remembered with the same esteem as pauline kael, he still writes some of the most astute (and oftentimes entertaining) reviews in mainstream print today. THAT is why mel is miffed. he knows how many people read brantley and furthermore, he knows that he is right about his new show.

Tim says:

Young Frankenstein Sucked. All of his movies have sucked after High Anxiety, and The Producers had about 250 times more actual jokes than the incoherently screeched lines of YF. The 3 times was generous; I was mildly amused 3 times and did not laugh out loud at all. His audience died out years ago and Young Frankenstein is a sad contrivance. Andrea Martin deserves much better.

Sam says:

While Mel may have been out of line and hyped up on his favorite drug "ego juice", it sounds like he was MEL...on and running with it. That can get really overwhelming after awhile, I agree.

However, if there is anyone who really belives that Ben Brantley is the pre-eminent theater critic, filled with insightful commentary and profound observations...WOW! Mel may have been mad that Brantley didn't like his show, and the show may not be up to par, but that does not make Brantley a good critic. I remember the old days when critics may still have been stubbornly opinionated but at least they knew something about theater. Ben usually speaks from his taste and if he doesn't like an actor or a playwright he seems incapable of writing an objective review. He loves the pretty girls and the pretty boys. That is about all I have seen as a pattern. At times his reviews are written almost as they are an after thought with little attention paid to continuity. He wanders all over the place, throwing in witticims to keep the readers entertained. He is a better theater journalist than Riedel, but that isn't saying much.

Personally I don't think that Mr. Handsome has received enough accolades for his humanitarian efforts. In my opinion a lot of celebrity do-gooders are totally phony and engage in so called good deeds merely for positive publicity. I have to say that I don't think that George is one of the phonies out there in the world of celbrity do-gooders. I admire what he is doing for the Haitian people. I wish more celebrities were as real as he is when it comes to helping out those less fortunate in the world. So kudos to George and his desire to make this world a better place.
