Ellen Page Sexuality Update

Posted by Michael Musto at 9:00 AM, February 29, 2008

After speculating about the tomboyish Ellen Page's sexuality, I got a call which I only picked up because the number on the Caller ID was similar to NBC's and I thought it was going to be a TV booking. Instead it was Kelly Bush—Page's publicist and manager—who sounded as if her cat had just gotten stuck in a drainpipe or something. My item had been picked up on Defamer, Bush said, and she wanted me to know that it was SHE who was with Page at the Oscars (though I had been sardonically wondering if it was a mother/girlfriend/whatever). She named a couple of other starlets who also had reps with them at the awards and said it's by no means an unusual practice. (Now I'll have to wonder if THEY'RE gay too.) "I don't know why people are so mean," Bush whinnied in a wounded voice. "It's not mean to wonder if someone's gay," I shrieked, outraged. "But to call her an 'Oscar loser'?" she moaned. "I didn't say that!" I yelped. "Maybe you're illiterate," I added, triumphantly slamming down the phone. Of course maybe I'M the dummy. I later realized I HAD called Page an "Oscar loser" in a short, sassy column item, also questioning her love life. Defamer had picked up the BLOG item, and I thought that's what we were talking about. In any case, I like Ellen Page, who's an appealing talent, so I nobly took "Oscar loser" off the web version faster than Juno gives away her baby. But I'm still livid that a publicist who would never normally call me for anything is so quick on the horn to do spin control whenever the L word comes up! And now, we're back to square zero anyway: IS she?

(Update on the update: I was just reminded that Bush is not only the woman who called Ellen DeGeneres's animal shelter with threats, she's a lesbian.)

Funny, she never said "Ellen's not a lesbo," did she? Just "Ellen wasn't sitting with her mother." It's almost like she's trying to clear her OWN name--"I'm not her mother!"

these publicists really got balls. pretty soon you can expect an announcement that ellen is dating a guy

Posted by: zanzibar8 at February 29, 2008 9:31 AM

I dunno, I think it's kinda sweet that she meant it was "mean" to call her and Oscar loser. Maybe that's really all she called about, to say she wasn't Page's mother and calling her and Oscar loser was mean? We'll never know, though, because you slammed the phone down. (And clipped your earring back on, I hope.)

Come ON. Page is not a lesbian.
My gaydar is 99.999999% accurate.

Posted by: Cole at February 29, 2008 11:09 AM

Yeah, Didn't you read your own comments? that's KElly Bush, her publicist!

Posted by: jacky at February 29, 2008 1:08 PM

It does indeed seem like youre back to square one. i hope you do find an answer to your question though.

Posted by: jacky at February 29, 2008 1:11 PM

Oh please. You're "livid," that a publicist called you to tell you that she is neither Page's mother nor girlfriend? You printed something inaccurate. Man-up and apologize.

Posted by: HankR at February 29, 2008 1:15 PM

Michael Musto, you make Perez Hilton look like a Pulitzer Prize winner. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Posted by: Carlos at February 29, 2008 3:16 PM

Hey, here's something to consider: Why the hell does it matter if Ellen is gay, straight, bi or whatever? If or when she wants to tell us, then we'll know. Until then, let's appreciate her talent and get on with our lives.

kelly bush is one of the top three most abhored flacks in the biz. notoriously out of control, hurtful and completely crazy. the poor person, male or female, who IS with her romantically. sad thing is how she wields her list of great clients around like a machete. be glad she doesn't call you more often, musto.

Posted by: pattycake at February 29, 2008 6:37 PM

Hey Pattycake, Did she fire you for filing your acrylics at the reception desk?

I've known her for years and she's one of the kindest, most genuine folks in the business.

Posted by: MaddoxJ at February 29, 2008 6:59 PM

Yeah, can't have Miss Anti-abortion Postergirl be a lesbo. Wouldn't be right.

Posted by: lrubemp at February 29, 2008 10:18 PM

Didn't it seem like she came out on SNL? You're on to something, Musto.

Posted by: cuchifrita at March 2, 2008 9:45 AM

I now realize why the phone number looked like NBC's. It WAS NBC's. Bush must have been calling me from the set of SNL, where Page was rehearsing.

Posted by: musto at March 2, 2008 9:59 AM

must, we are laughing AT you not WITH you. Go put your caftan and debbie Reynolds records and stop picking on young girls.

Posted by: liza with a t at March 2, 2008 2:18 PM

I'm not sure why this matters.

Posted by: Hector Sanders at March 3, 2008 4:15 PM

Does it really matter whether she's gay, bi or straight? Let the girl be. If she wants to munch on carpet. Let her. Damn..... What is wrong with you people tearing apart this girl?

Posted by: Does it matter? at March 5, 2008 1:03 PM

It matters because it will change the scenes in my mind when I go home and beat it like it owes me money.

Posted by: ElGuapo at March 30, 2008 2:20 AM

Pattycake, Kelly Bush is by far one of the top Power Publicists in Hollywood and she takes care of her clients! You must be terribly jealous and a complete loser to say the things you said AND, Michael Musto, you have nerve putting labels on anyone. My GAY-DAR goes off the hook when I hear your little lispy, nelly voice on television.

You're lucky you're getting your 15 minutes of fame. One day you'll be an old Queen, living your life in desperation and certainly ALONE! Be careful what you say about people...Karma can be a VERY painful thing when you least expect it.

And to agree with some of the more intelligent people that wrote in this blog....what does it matter if Ellen Page is gay, straight or WHAT?

Get over yourself before everyone else does.

Posted by: Chris at April 5, 2008 4:28 PM

So your gaydar goes off when you see me on TV? That's good because I'm OPENLY GAY, moron! You can't slime me with the fact that I'm a homo. I told you first!!! Over and over again!!! I'm the most openly gay person in the entire world! That's why I have the right to say other people are gay!

And you also feel I have some nerve to "label" people by reporting on their private lives the way all gossip reporters do? Huh? Do you yell that when the press calls celebrities straight? Do you screech, "How dare you say Angelina and Brad are having a hetero relationship! That is sick! Leave them alone!"??? No, you don't say that because you're a hypocritical, empty headed moron!

Posted by: musto at April 5, 2008 11:19 PM

A lesbian publicist trying to ensure her client isn't thought of as a lesbian? Oh, the memories of watching a certain lesbian publicist (and reading about it in a NYC gay bar rag) jump 20 feet screaming "NOOOOO" to prevent her client, Mandy Moore, from entering the gay (and straight friendly) hospitality lounge known as The Queer Lounge during the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. Of course, Patrick Fugit , Macauly Caulkin and the rest of the cast from Saved! didn't have a problem with it.

Most of the homophobia I've seen is self-enforced by self-hating gay publicists, gay talent agents and gay talent managers who would rather see their clients in fake weddings than out-of-the-closet. They feel middle america couldn't deal with someone being gay (because it never happens in middle america!) and their clients would be out of work.

Posted by: Chrissypoo at April 11, 2008 11:30 AM

Dude, Kelly Bush is gay but like she has 2 kids and a wife of like 14 years or something. I am sure she is not sneaking out with the 21 year old client, not very professional, and Kelly Bush didn't get where she is at by not being professional. All ya had to do was some research. Ow up you messed up and she got ya, :0
