Drag Rock Movie Hits Tribeca Festival in a Whoosh of Mascara

Posted by Michael Musto at 3:00 PM, March 18, 2008

Mama's gonna be in the Tribeca Film Festival again! I play a small role in SqueezeBox!, the documentary about the hawt drag rock club that livened up the trannie-sitional '90s, though I imagine more screen time will be filled with names like the Toilet Boys, Sherry Vine, Debbie Harry, and John Cameron Mitchell. The official synopsis of the film—which will have five Tribeca screenings starting on April 25—tells you why we care: "During the turbulent reign of Giuliani in the '90s, when Times Square was being sold to Disney and sex clubs were shuttered in favor of fast food chains, there was a brief shining moment when drag queens rocked New York nightlife. The epicenter of that moment was SqueezeBox, a weekly pansexual rock and roll party at Don Hill's. Started as a refuge for gay rock and rollers who felt like outsiders in both the gay and rock worlds, the party grew to become the seminal event in nightlife history."

A few questions: "The seminal event in nightlife history?" Are the drugs still kicking in? More importantly, when will all the other club docs I was interviewed for find an audience (Jackie 60, Motherfucker, the Roxy, the Saint, etc)? And finally, since when did sex clubs and fast food chains become two separate things?

Wasn't Squeezebox the place where fat fuck Jackie Beat bored people to tears?

Jackie is brilliant, you tired thing! I loved this place, miss it, what's at the EAR Bar now anyways? They had a Cher night there, too. There are no rock & roll fag bars anymore unless you count The Cock and The Urge.

I must trumpet the last poster's defense of Jackie Beat. She may be bigger and more bitter than ever, but boring she is NOT.

And SQUEEZEBOX! I can't wait to finally see this documentary. I hope the footage of Formika double-sodomizing two go go boys with Heineken bottles simultaneously makes the final cut! Pun intended!

Good for you Michael...now you can finally get over the Rocky Horror Picture Show. You go!

I once slam danced into Formika there, our chemistry has always been weird, and sprained my middle finger.

Jackie Beat not only isn't boring, but I've insisted she play me (as a child, of course) in the film version of my life. I'd prefer Lypsinka to play me during my prime, glorious party girl years and in the last sad years when I looked like an old, nicotine-stained alcoholic hag, I'd like to see Sylvia Miles finally get the great part she so richly deserves. No makeup required! Dahling!

I love Rock & Drag!! I think the original concept for Squeeze Box was great. The realization, however, impressed me as a pretentious recreation of the Mudd Club at the Boy Bar. I recall my first visit there to see Cherry Vanilla who was amzazingly on target (after all these years!!!). The crowd, however, didn't seem to know what to do (how to dance) with the rock music. Formika's disco moves to the rock didn't do it for me. None of the drag queens except for Miss Guy, Jayne County, & Headwig really seemed knew how to rock. As a rock venue, it impressed me as beeing as authentic, as "Happy Days" was to the fifties. There is, however, a never ending market for such films, now in the American Gay provences, in the same tradition of the highly comercialized celluloid version of Wig Stock. Coming soon.....Clevland Rocks!

I misspoke. Jackie Beat isn't boring. Just a nasty c word.

Posted by: patricia kneel at March 19, 2008 12:13 PM

I'm confused...is that a drag queen or Rod Stewart flipping the finger in that pic?

Posted by: Billy at March 19, 2008 2:51 PM

Ben There, I don't think it was pretentious or like Boy Bar, you must have gone on an off night. I went to one girl's party there which was a tribute to Pat Benatar and they had the Squeeze Box band and different people got up and did their fave Pat song. This girl had another Pat party at some other venue a couple of years ago.

I hope the film doesn't feature the always gross and untalented Jayne County, who only got attention because she supposedly chopped her dick off! Not a big drag fan in general, there are a few exceptions. I think I got a b.j. & the bear in the bathroom there once.

You all sound bitter,,,this film is the kinda of thing the New NY needs to see...more,more & more,,,and i heard about his many moons ago at mothefrucker (the party that ripped squeezebox off) so the fact that they did and got into Tribeca is fuckin rad...I heard too that john waters produced it...good for those queens and you can all fuck off...jayne & jackie are AMAZING!

VIVA SQUEEZEBOX!! Does anyone know how we can but tickets?? Been calling Tribeca and they are clueless to how to buy them!
We want to go everynight!! I met my boyfriend of 12 years there!!!!

This is great news. Thanks for letting us know abroad Musto! So glad the talent that came out of the Don Hill's scene will be on the screen and we can stop hearing about that talentless scene of wannabes that troll at Don's now, the Misshapes. When I was last in NY after moving to Berlin three years ago I went to see what the Misshapes were all about...what a sad joke....what happened to NY...you people used to smell rats and kick them out of town...They laugh at the Misshapes here in Europe cause they know what frauds they are and don't need to kiss ass to get in a mindless page six. Come to SqueezeBox in Berlin Michael you will love it!

Right on to that last comment posted! But to the top person....Have you ever seen Jackie Beat perform? No one belts it out like her, yes she is bitter but she has balls and performs like no other and not just sits behind a DJ booth with no talent.
Ciao from Rome
