Gypsy Mishap: Curtain Up! Air Vent Down!

Posted by Michael Musto at 3:00 PM, March 4, 2008

Everything's coming up roses over at the Broadway revival of Gypsy starring Patti LuPone, but unfortunately at the first preview last night, everything was coming down at the same time. Towards the end of the backstage musical, a poor woman in the balcony was hit by a falling piece of air vent and had to be led out of the theater amidst much commotion, as the troupers onstage kept going. "Patti really brought down the house," snapped a poster on allthatchat. "Your theater restoration fees put to good use," cracked another poster. In other scary Gypsy news, the lamb is apparently played by a puppet walked around the stage by a weird man in a beret. Ewww!

Nothing's gonna stop LuPone. She's a force of nature. But it's funny how, as Rose is falling apart, so is the theater. Hopefully they won't do that every night.

Even Ben Brantley and Charles Isherwood can't stop La LuPone.

I have balcony seats for two weeks from now and I'm thinking of canceling. It's not worth getting a concussion to see yet another production of Gypsy. Though the lamb puppet being walked arund the stage by the weird man in the beret does sound intriguing. Bernadette and Tyne didn't have THAT!

Curtain up. AIR VENT DOWN.
Sounds like a new song for Forbidden Broadway.
Clears throat. Maybe it's Merman's ghost?

Can't stand her, she ugly and this play is so tired and worn out, it was only a few years ago when Bernadette did it.

I wish Patti would do a musical based on MY life. With that dahling Jennifer Hudson as my occasional girlfriend Hattie McDaniels and Clay Aiken as my occasional gay boyfriend. And, naturally, there would be a role for you, Michael, as well. Perhaps as the sympathetic assistant who tries to sober me up before my next performance?

Palestinian superdiva Patti Bin Laden winds up in May a 10 year run in the late Saddam Hussein smash hit epic adaptation of the classic "Zephira and the King" at the Jericho Centre. Word on the strip is our Patti needs a follow up but not "Gypsy" cos it's about a single mother. HARAM!!! - So if that's true about the Anne Frank musical it would be a perfect vehicle. Anne Frank is a true heroine of the Palestian people cos her life had such a happy ending. - Whoops incoming missile!
