What the Butler Saw: How Gay is Xanadu!

Posted by Michael Musto at 3:00 PM, March 26, 2008

Kerry Butler, the one on the left

As I mentioned in the column, I finally met Kerry Butler, the winning star of Broadway's nutty Xanadu, and she told me she LOVES it when she looks out into the audience and spots a lot of gays. "I think, 'Yay! it's gay night!'," Kerry exulted with a glinty smile. Of course the show has official Boys Nights, promotional events whereby they BEG for decorators from Hell's Kitchen to fill the seats. And Kerry simply adores that too. As she told me, "I wish every night was gay night!" Honey, over at Gypsy, it IS.

But they don't perform the songs with as much pop panache as Olivia, The Tubes & ELO. I'd love to see it if I could only afford it, I'm an office temp and love the movie. I did see Olivia at Nokia do "Xanadu," "Heart Attack," "Twist of Fate", etc. live, she rocked.

They don't sing the songs as well as Cliff Richard, The Tubes, Olivia & ELO but I'd love to see it if I could only afford it. I love the album & movie and saw Olivia at Nokia, she did "Xanadu" and sounded and looked fantastic. Britney Spears & Miley "Jesus rocks" Cyrus take note.

The last words out of the late society matron Brooke Astor's mouth were: "I wish every night was gay night." Even terribly rich frail old ladies need a little gay festivity. And it's NOT true that the last words out of TV icon Paul Lynde's mouth were: "I wish every night was gay night." He was so bitter at the end. His last words were, "I need an enema."
