Who Will Get Tony Nominations? Only I Know--Or Care

Posted by Michael Musto at 9:00 AM, March 28, 2008

I know I'm the only one within miles who gives a rat's ass about this, especially so early in the game, but please humor me as I put out my predictions for my favorite Tony awards category, Best Actress in a Musical. (Come on, please! This can't really harm anyone and it'll make me feel so good.) It's shaping up as a real wowser category, even better than last year when Christine Ebersole beat Audra McDonald and three other indestructible divas. This time, the nominees will surely be (drumroll): Patti LuPone, Gypsy (Ben Brantley raved! Yay!); Kelli O'Hara, South Pacific; Faith Prince, A Catered Affair; Jenna Russell, Sunday in the Park With George; and Kerry Butler, Xanadu. I am so dead sure about these picks that I'm willing to suggest a very special can't-harm-anyone offer: If I'm wrong, you can buy me lunch to make me feel better.

more: Xanadu, theater

You're no the only one who cares, miss Musto. We all do. And you're right on. Patti, of course, will go home wth the prize.

I have to put my vote in for Kerry Butler. I still have a good laugh when I think about her in Xanadu. And I can hardly wait to see Faith Prince in A Catered Affair. I saw Patti do Gypsy at Ravinia - I'm sure she's going to win. But thank you Michael for getting the conversation started so early. The Tony's are only a little over 2 months away!

I think Kelli O'Hara has a good shot at the Tony... she doesn't bulldoze through the role for 3 hours and is totally believable in her part.

I must admit I only got four out of five right last year. I predicted Kristen Chenowith for a nomination instead of Laura Bell Bundy.

Posted by: musto at March 28, 2008 11:30 AM

Jenna Russell all the way for me!!!

Hate Lupone and "Gypsy" is so tired. Why don't they revive something a little less worn?

Posted by: marcia wallace's hairburner at March 28, 2008 12:12 PM

I agree with Marcia Wallace's Hair Burner. "Gypsy" gets revived every five minutes. When is someone going to put Patti Lupone in the musical version of "The Little Foxes?" I mean, IS there a musical version of "Little Foxes?" Christ, they made a musical out of those two nutjobs in "Grey Gardens." And what about the rumor that Faith Prince will be playing me in a new musical version of "Die! Die! My Darling." I prefer Faith Prince to Charles Busch.

Posted by: The Late Tallulah Bankhead at March 28, 2008 3:18 PM

Faith Prince will win this award; hands down!

Posted by: Mary at March 28, 2008 8:21 PM

Sorry Lupone fans, but I saw Faith Prince do Catered Affair in San Diego. She is utterly brilliant and heartbreaking and she has the Tony in the bag.

Posted by: MadMike at March 28, 2008 8:35 PM

Dame Jenna for sure.

Posted by: MouseHouse at March 29, 2008 4:47 AM

Who'll play the Stef Powers role in "Die! Die!" Love the harpsichord score in that film.

Posted by: e.j. tweaker at March 31, 2008 11:55 AM

Dame Jenna Jameson?

Posted by: e.j. tweaker at April 1, 2008 9:36 AM

Sorry Tallu, I heard that Charles Busch IS playing you in the new musical version of "Die! Die! My Darling." And the Stef Powers role is going to Mindy Cohen.

I think Kerry Butler will get knocked out in favor of Jackee Harry's Mama Rose in the all black production of Gypsy that opens next week. Saw a preview on Sunday, and she is phenomenal!

I can't believe no one has even mentioned Lin-Manuel Miranda from 'In the Heights'. The boy is a genius! What a great musical. I saw this play for the 3rd time on a rainy day when i saw you Musto walking buy (looking a little angry but I understand people suck so it's ok to be angry) you're a genius as well...plastic shopping bags to cover your shoes so they don't get wet! why haven't i thought of that...

Posted by: funky_diabetic at April 9, 2008 11:22 AM

i'm an ass..i didn't even realize you were only talking about best actress, not actor...that's another post..duh

Posted by: funky_diabetic at April 9, 2008 11:24 AM

Yes, Lin may sound like a woman's name, but he's a dude, LOL.

Anyway, thanks for spotting my plastic bag fashion statement. I'm proud of that.

Posted by: musto at April 9, 2008 11:31 AM

I agree that Gypsy is revived too much. I mean, are we going to learn anything more about Mama Rose without having to read June Havoc's book? However, this was the darkest production of this show I have ever seen. I liked seeing a really pissed off Baby June, the Depression (and all that goes with that)hanging over their heads and Ms. Lupone's tragic desperate Mama.

One show has been left off this list and it was one of the best things I have seen in years. Passing Strange is unbelievable.
