Ellen Page Lesbianism Update: Why The Fuss?

Posted by Michael Musto at 9:00 AM, April 2, 2008

My column this week goes into yet more sexuality talk about Juno star Ellen Page, so I’m bracing myself for the usual rounds of “How dare you?” and “Who cares?” In defense, let me once again get out the same rationales that I dug up when outing Methuselah and tell you why this sort of thing is OK. OK?

Firstly, a celebrity is a public figure whose life is regularly dissected by the media. By pursuing this high-profile profession and becoming a boldface name in the process, they’ve implicitly agreed to this kind of scrutiny (within the law and reason). I always find it amusing that no one ever complains when straight stuff comes out about them—you never hear, “How dare you say that male actor is dating that female actor? This is an outrageous invasion of privacy!” It’s only when the gay word comes up that people suddenly decide gossip is vulgar and irrelevant. But I personally feel that to gossip about every aspect of celebs’ lives EXCEPT the gay stuff is homophobic, hypocritical, and downright silly.

“But it hurts careers!” comes the inevitable response from the outraged. Well, I didn’t MAKE these people gay, I’m just saying they are. It’s up to them to come out or not, but it’s not up to ME to shut up about it. I’m not going to make homosexuality off limits because I might be tapping into the ethical failures of some bigots out there by speaking the truth. I don’t find homosexuality—or hints of it—distasteful at all and I’m not going to cater to those who do by shutting my trap on the subject. And if I should never say anything that might hurt a career, then maybe I should make a point of writing that Will Smith is white, Mel Brooks is young, and Norbit was a really good movie.

What’s more, Ellen Page—who may or may not be gay—is clearly playing along with all the speculation. She’s MAKING people talk by not giving definitive answers about her sexuality. She even did a sketch on Saturday Night Live that seemed to feed right into all the chit chat. By refusing to squawk, “How dare you! I am NOT a lesbian,” she’s letting us think that this kind of talk isn’t appalling to her at all. Even when her publicist called me, she never said, “She’s not a lesbian,” just “That was me with her at the Oscars” (though I hung up on her, so who knows what else she was going to say).

There’s even someone who’s gone on a lot of sites and shrieked that she knows who Ellen’s girlfriend is, even including the girlfriend’s supposed phone number. THAT’S going too far. I just need her address so I can send a wedding gift.

I Do find straight gossip offensive. If I hear one more word about Brad and Angelina...

Don't care about her, can't stand her ugly mug and boring personality and "Juno" sucked ass. Why don't you give someone interesting and talented some press?

Posted by: e.j. tweaker at April 2, 2008 10:26 AM

I love you, Michael. You are right on! Keep up the good work!

Posted by: Grant at April 2, 2008 11:45 AM

I love her so much, I wish she was gay or had a girlfriend. I just can't imagine her not having a girlfriend.

Posted by: virus4evawtf at April 2, 2008 11:53 AM

Ellen Page -- blah! She's a boring little fuckface with a good vocabulary. I don't care if she's lesbo or has sex with sea monkeys, she's a precocious child actress. Of course, if she's ever cast as sexy, vibrant young Tallu in "The True, Uncensored Tallulah Bankhead Story," I will retract every negative word I ever said. But she's not pretty enough. I really see Abigail Breslin in that role. Or RuPaul.

Posted by: The Late Tallulah Bankhead at April 2, 2008 12:05 PM

I think she does have a girlfriend named Paula.

Posted by: zooey at April 2, 2008 12:09 PM

Miss Musto, stop preaching, just do what you do, hon.

Posted by: lorna licenseplate at April 2, 2008 12:19 PM

thank you, grant!!!

Posted by: musto at April 2, 2008 12:24 PM

Using Frank magazine as a source is akin to quoting from National Lampoon..

Posted by: Dangerous Herbert at April 2, 2008 12:31 PM

Though I agree that celebrities have "implicitly agreed to this kind of scrutiny (within the law and reason)," I think you're stepping out of the bounds of "reason" with this one. Firstly, all of your evidence is perpetuating lesbians stereotypes-- the fact that Page is a tomboy, likes baggy jeans, admires Jodie Foster, and is playing a lesbian role sounds like you're using fifth grade reasoning to out this girl.

Also, though gossip goes hand-in-hand with celebrity these days, don't you think that the amount of attention a celebrity receives (meaning that which is not based on their actual work, but rather their personal life) should be comparable to the amount of attention they seek from the media outside of their professional appearances? Page is no Lohan or Hilton-- she has not been seen at any celebrity hot spot clubs/restaurants or drunkenly rambling. Obviously, the attention that comes along with acting is unavoidable these days, but those who aren't playing into it shouldn't have their personal lives continuously under attack.

Admittedly, Page did fuel the fire with that notorious Melissa Etheridge sketch. Still, I think the point that she made with it in saying, "Why does everything have to have a fricken' label," seemed to be her way of saying, "I'm not going to put myself in either box (pun maybe partially intended) and no one should have to." I have yet to see one of the bloggers posing the "is she or isn't she" question, including yourself, have pointed that positive message out, instead, focusing your efforts on the Perez Hilton-esque gay witch hunt approach. And that's just sad.

Posted by: notbuyingit at April 2, 2008 1:04 PM

You're wrong Michael, and you should know better.

I'm not going to say that it's uncommon that most people feel exactly the way you do about "celebrities" implicity agreeing to being scrutinized in the media, but it's an example of the misguided sense of entitlement we exemplify in our culture, and the last thing we should be doing is encouraging it by saying that it's acceptable and "lawful". Get real.

Whatever the expected response, you're still using Ellen Page for your own personal gain/gay political agenda, whathaveyou. Its wrong, and there is no justification in any of it. Now please, go and put your journalstic ability to use and report something that's actually substantial.

Posted by: at April 2, 2008 3:11 PM

You should mind your own business, Mr. Musto. Let's talk about her talent and movies and not focus on her sexuality.

Posted by: maria at April 2, 2008 4:04 PM

Frank Magazine's about as accurate as any other entertainment rag (if not more), so put that in your juice box and suck it!

Posted by: Frank Magazine at April 2, 2008 4:44 PM

why are you so singularly focused on Ellen Page? She's just a young actress that's focused on doing good work, there's other celebs that you try to make accusations of being gay. Why not go after Zac Efron, Hayden Christensen, Chace Crawford, Ryan Seacrest, JC Chasez?

Posted by: LL at April 2, 2008 5:29 PM

Huh? You obviously don't read my work. I've "gone after" many of those. And I don't consider it a going after, nor an "accusrtion." It's just reporting.

Posted by: musto at April 2, 2008 6:14 PM

I hope she is a "L", hehe almost said it! If she is
then I could daydream about her and another chica! Whoops just did, gotta run!

Posted by: straightJoeBlow at April 2, 2008 6:32 PM

Lets face it, the only reason you chose this topic is to get hits on your site because of Ellen's popularity. This so called "update" adds nothing fresh to the crap you've already dispensed on the subject.

Posted by: Jim H at April 2, 2008 6:56 PM

And it totally worked! Woo-hoo!!!!!

Posted by: musto at April 2, 2008 11:35 PM

You tell 'em Musto!

Posted by: John at April 3, 2008 12:43 AM

whatever her personal life entails, she's not one of these superficial celebutards who throw themselves into the middle of controversy, not that anyone really deserves it, but you should at least give her that respect. and though i don't know her pesonally, i don't think it would be too far-fetched to surmise that she probably finds it insulting to be defined by something as inconsequential as her sexuality.

so please, just watch it will ya.

Posted by: merc4hire at April 3, 2008 6:20 AM

"You obviously don't read my work."

Your "work?" You're a gossip columnist, not Tennessee Williams, get some perspective, Mary!

Posted by: e.j. tweaker at April 3, 2008 10:12 AM

I know, but I thought saying "You obviously don't read my shit" didn't have as much of a ring to it.

Posted by: musto at April 3, 2008 10:51 AM

I know, I just had to bust you for that. You should write a play, 'though, you'd be good at it, make it an 80's memoir or something. I also thought Ann Magnuson should do this about her Club 57 days and apparently she did, but she & her writing partner couldn't sell it to HBO.

I was really amused to read all the different takes on Ellen’s SNL lesbian skit. Virtually every journalist from around the world reported that she was making fun of all the lesbian rumors that surround her. For example:
"Ellen Page combated rumors that she is a lesbian during a leg-slapping skit during her SNL hosting gig over the weekend."
That’s sure what I and most viewers thought. But those people who want her to be lesbian got something completely different out of the skit. However just think about it – if she was really in the closet as you say she is, would she ever do a lesbian skit drawing attention to herself? Improbable.
And what about a different juicy piece of gossip about Ellen. Producer Robert Tapert ,who knows her quite well, said recently that she and actor Mark Rendall were dating. Who knows for sure but she did backpack across Europe with Mark and there are lots of pictures of them together on the internet looking cozy and holding hands including one picture with her head poking out between his legs captioned Ellen Page and her boyfriend Mark Rendall.
And she keeps saying very unlesbianlike things like she’s going to practice safe sex and use a condom or she would like to get married some day and have kids etc. She reminisces about old boy friends and talks about different crushes she’s had on guys.
I have no idea what her sexuality is and I don’t care but the only thing that the people who want her to be a lesbian seem to falling back on is that she is an articulate tomboy who pings their gaydar. She has neither done nor said anything that would support this conclusion.

Yikey, Mikey!

Even your rants are entertaining.

Mr. Musto is merely explaining the ground rules of the gossip turf.

And doing so with his usual combination of heat, humor and hubris.

Posted by: David Cuthbert at April 3, 2008 12:15 PM

thank you, david! I'm proud of my rants.

Posted by: musto at April 3, 2008 12:16 PM

hey michael,
keep up the good work, don't let the naysayers get you down. i'm sure the truth will reveal itself eventually. thanks

Posted by: mary at April 3, 2008 5:54 PM

She's not gay. She dated Ben Foster.

Posted by: at April 3, 2008 7:39 PM

Um, it was already addressed that she denied that ever happened.

Posted by: lutha at April 3, 2008 8:11 PM

I don't really care about Ellen Page, but I must say that this is one of your best rants in quite a while. Kudos!

Posted by: Thombeau at April 8, 2008 7:02 PM

(main point:) She goes along with the lesbo talk cuz she doesnt give a sh*t, and promotes being unique and don't follow the mainstream of being a guy/girl the media promotes.

but heeey, it's ok, just a buncha ppl that aren't even a fraction of how important/famous compared to Ellen posting here to bash her. So flame on hypocrites and 'losers in life'.

=)

Posted by: at April 9, 2008 11:06 PM

Ouch Musto....commenting on your OWN blogs? man...phew....that's sad.

Posted by: at April 9, 2008 11:11 PM

e.j. tweaker is a GIANT USED TAMPON OVERFLOWING WITH BLOOD!

Posted by: Vampiya at April 30, 2008 5:37 PM

In my opinion ellen page is not gay. So an articulate and beautiful female comes into the scene and goes against the normal grain that hollywood's hottest are used to following and she's gay? That's ridiculous. She's one of the most talented actresses to grace film in a long time.

I mean coretta scott king was an advocate for womens rights but she wasn't gay. Just because a woman has a strong belief doesn't make her same sex oriented.

Or maybe its just my love for ellen page that drove this comment. Either way, she's not gay and one of the best actresses out, PERIOD!!!!
