La Dolce Musto: the column

Why We Won't Win The Election

Posted by Michael Musto at 8:45 AM, April 22, 2008

This should have been the easiest time in history for the Democrats to sweep into the White House. Dubya's approval rating is lower than Conan O'Brien's and everyone's fed up with the lies behind the war in Iraq as well as the terrifying state of the economy, both of which are hideously related. Anyone Democratic—even a reality show runner-up—would have pranced along and trounced anyone Republican at this point. It was a no brainer! But instead, our top candidates are a half-African-American and a woman who are dividing the party with their bitter fights, gradually alienating everyone who might have liked either one of them. I'm all for progress blah blah blah and can't wait to see the day when we have a black or female (or black female) President, but perhaps now was not the right time to experiment and put "risky" candidates up, not when we could so effortlessly have sailed in and taken over with someone more universally popular. Adding to that, the fact that these two have such equal appeal (and non-appeal) that they're going to fight to the finish line is tearing the party apart, and it's gotten much uglier than it needed to. It seems every time Obama is honest and incisive about the state of our country, he gets crucified for being "anti-American." His remarks about justifiably bitter Pennsylvanians and the power situations they cling to seemed spot-on to me, but of course Hillary used it to say he's elitist and out of touch and to score points about how uncomplicated and nice Pennsylvanians are (a pont of view which doesn't do them any favors). As the two gorgons battle it out, we're surely paving the way for the unbridled horror of President McCain! Our only hope right now is if we can catch McCain in a few "senior situations"--like maybe confusing Al Jazeera with Al Jarreau--but I suspect even that won't get us the Presidency. And I'm starting to wonder if we really deserve it.

Harsh truths, Musto, and you may get flack for it, but I suspect you're right.

Blech, politics as usual in a year where our economy is in the shitter and a war that's has dragged on far too long. I'm not surprised there is so much pessimism rampant across the nation, these candidates have yet to supply us with concrete answers on how they would put our nation back on track. None of them are worthy of our votes, all they want to do is nitpick, and the media is akin to that meddlesome friend who likes to create and report the drama. All of them are oblivious to the needs of the middle class, and that will not change. What we really need is a fantabulous set of gay candidates, a sort of "Queer Mates for the United States" who could give us an awesome overhaul. Otherwise, until we see some serious leadership out of this mess, I don't see much changing for our country.

You're watching too much mainstream media.

I hate to admit it but I think you're right, Michael. Next January we'll be witnessing the horror of McCain's inauguration. Meaning, more of the atrocious policies we've lived under the past 8 years. Obama is too conservative for me in a number of ways, but compared to the horrific Hillary (liar, war-monger, gay-betrayer, race-baiter, corporate lawyer from hell, etc) he's great. But our corporate media clearly are in love with McCain and are using all sorts of trivial bullshit to knock down Obama. The ABC "debate" was unbelievable, with Stephanopolos and Gibson competing to see who could ask the most idiotic questions. I can imagine what the actual campaign will be like in the fall. Yeah, this country is fucked.

Something about Obama scares me (maybe his wife) and I think Hillary is more honest and more in touch with the working class than he. He strikes me a strutting, vain phoney. I'm voting for her.

Michael, whether you're writing about Democrats, dives or dykes, you are consistently ON POINT. You go boy! All I can add to your commentary and our choices in this ongoing Clinton-Obama Drama is a quotation by John Kenneth Galbraith, who said, "politics is the art of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable." Now you go figure that one out!

Thank you, B. Brown!

"Hillary is more honest and more in touch with the working class than he."

Yeah, and Madonna is a world-class coloratura and the heir to Callas.

Give me a fuckin break. Clinton supported NAFTA, a classic corporate free trade agreement that has hurt working class people. She's a corporate lawyer through and through and her current populist stance is just further proof of what a phoney she is. When she was on the board of Walmart, she did absolutely nothing to support workers who wanted to unionize and instead was a total company person. Obama ain't great, but he's infinitely more real than that lying, triangulating, gay-betraying witch.

All I can say is no matter who wins the nomination, just vote Dem please! I don't care if they nominate a homing pigeon at this point. At least lets get rid of the Republicans for a little while anyway.

BTW- I don't agree with you Musto. The race isn't over and there is a long way to go. The fighting it just politics. I voted for Obama today in Philly. My Mom voted for Clinton. :)

I think it's true that Hillary is ruthlessly destroying the Democrats hopes. But the Democrats have been a mess for a long time, always trying to appeal to some imaginary group that is going to vote Republican anyway, so they won't say the things that need to be said.

And that pro wrestling "Hill Rod" video was a shame. The fact that they would do that just adds to my perception that it's all a fix, anyway. Divide the Dems with a black man and a white woman, which sounds racist and sexist as hell, but sadly it's the only way to guarantee the Republicans stay in the White House.

iabandoned the ship in 1976 when Nixon won his 2nd term by the biggest landslide in history. Props and sympathy to those who are still there. Perhaps it is true that people get the government they deserve. Obama gives me some hope but does the American electorate have the courage to go with him? Probably not. I would love to see New York City secede and start a new country (President Musto?)He's got my vote.

Posted by: scruffy at April 23, 2008 2:31 AM

Thanks, scruffy. But who should be my first lady? Rosie O'Donnell?

Posted by: musto at April 23, 2008 2:42 AM

Rosie's good or take a hint from the President where I now live and look for a beautiful Italian model-singer.

Posted by: scruffy at April 23, 2008 12:27 PM

Exactly how his Hillary betrayed the gay people? I don't see how NAFTA wasn't good for the working class or how Unions always help, sometimes they're worthless. I'm a good judge of character since I've worked many jobs and with many people in Manhattan since 1978! I go with my gut instinct and that works for me. Sorry, I stand by my judgment on Obama, he seems devoid of any real plan for this country, just getting by on his newbie status, supposed charisma and rhetoric.

Is there absolutely no blog where paid Hillary shills don't post? I will be so happy when she is finally dumped into the dustbin of history, which will happen any month now.

And, Michael, I truly love your work, but you're not right about this and not even close. Obama won the nomination months ago and an inanimate object could beat McCain in November. Hillary will continue to destroy the party but will fail.

If you want to worry about something, try the fact that the last two Presidential elections were rigged and stolen and the only way to beat the criminal system in place is massive turnout in the Democrats' favor (such as the 2006 election). Clinton hasn't delivered this and she won't and Obama has delivered this and he will.

In other words, if you're truly concerned, start working your butt off to get Hillary to give up her plan to wreck the party at the convention and let's get on with the candidate who's already won the nomination by every conceivable measure.
