YouTube Treasure: Little Lena Zavaroni's Volcanic Singing

Posted by Michael Musto at 3:00 PM, April 10, 2008

Scottish child singer Lena Zavaroni was a '70s talk show regular who belted songs out of the park like a pint-sized Ethel Merman. With pitch-perfect musicality unfettered by any shred of self-consciousness, Lena barreled onstage and pitched her notes to the balcony, creating a seismic shift in the room with her tumultuous talent. Here she warbles "Ma! He's Makin' Eyes at Me" on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, who's suitably awestruck. Sadly, Lena battled anorexia for years and died at 35 in 1999—but her voice remains large.

You know, I respect young talent with more of this caliber than all the Miley Cyruses in the world combined. There was no fuss over this girl's virginity back in the 1970s, that's for sure. I sure miss those golden days of the Tonight Show...*looks longingly out a mist-covered window*

I recall not only this Carson appearance, but also a billboard ad for the 'Ma! He's Making Eyes At Me' album looming above the boardwalk in pre-casino Atlantic City when I visited there as a kid in '74. A tremendously gifted youngster who, sadly, battled serious demons in subsequent years. Cheers for posting this, MM.

Michael,

Thank you for recalling her and sharing. I remember watching her when I was a kid (she and I are the same age) on "Wonderama" and "The Carol Burnett Show," where she held her own against the mighty Carol. Until now I always wondered why I never saw her again. I had no idea she had a career in England after her American tour. And I certainly didn't know she had such a difficult life.

Good God!
Lena had an American career!
Who knew?
