Health Care Doesn’t Care: An Old Folks' Hospital Diary (Part Four)

Posted by Michael Musto at 9:00 AM, May 8, 2008

Then came the bills—which we paid—and then the duplicate bills, which subtly strained to look new and unattended, but you can’t fool THIS cheapo. Next came a lab bill which said the insurance wouldn’t cover it—though they bizarrely had the wrong insurance company listed in tiny type! Then (let’s call it) Lutheran sent another bill, but I called and informed them we had already paid that amount. They obviously weren't listening because a collection agency then sent a notice demanding the very same sum. I wrote them back saying that I had the fucking canceled check in hand! They promptly dropped that, but sent a bill for a whole other amount—one that had never been brought up before! I sent them a letter asking for an explanation, but all I got in return was Lutheran coming up with a whole OTHER fee! Strangely, this was the first time they’d mentioned THIS whopping amount in the seventh months since my parents had left the place! And then came yet another all-new bill, plus they had someone calling us about that old amount—the one I had the canceled check for! If the folks had to deal with all these scams and loopholes on their own, they’d probably be homeless by now—but at least they’d be eligible for Medicaid.

(To be continued tomorrow. . .)

Just like hotels subtly add minibar expenses you never incurred, hospitals will add extra bills, figuring most people will just sign the check and send it off. They will also later send duplicates, hoping the old people won't remember they already paid them. It's an absolute disgrace. Some of these hospitals are teetering on financial oblivion, but that's no excuse to bilk sick, innocent people.

disgusting in the extreme.

there is absolutely such a thing as karma, and simply working in a hospital don't make you immune to it!!!

somehow hospitals have the gall to put forth the idea that you should be so grateful for their 'help' and expertise that any bullshit they pull in the course of it and of course after it is excusable. WHO WORKS places like this and OKS this stuff???? precisely WHO accounts for them? and who profits??? whose job is it to monitor fairness in private hospital accounting?
fending for any person/s too sick to do it for themselves is a noble , sometimes thankless [and yet frustrating to the point of implosion] task. It validly freaks one out to extrapolate how much worse it could be were the ill person/s alone.

So sorry your particular parents had this go down, and you had to slog through it, but your ability to just openly point out the evil unfair sneaky policies HELPS.
thanks for deciding to write about this, I know there are MANY people who have been, are, or will be in the same boat and need to be stoic and vigilant about it all. Your words of outrage [as always] make a difference. and it's NY as hell for them to be juxtapozed with all the glittah+gossip.

It's amazing that a country such as ours, with our prosperity for so many years, and the generosity we have shown the world, that we let our elderly and sick suffer through all this trauma of finding affordable and reliable health care. I wish our leadership would wake up and realize that charity begins at home. We have so many people struggling to make ends meet, and the bureaucracy we have to go through day in and day out is just ridiculous.
