Health Care Doesn’t Care: An Old Folks' Hospital Diary (Fifth and last entry)

Posted by Michael Musto at 9:00 AM, May 9, 2008

At one point, I got a NICE letter from the home, saying they still had some of dad's things and I should come pick them up. I schlepped all the way down there and had to wait 30 tedious minutes for them to find someone to get the stuff—mostly useless T shirts—out of storage. The emerging pain in my ass—uncovered by insurance—was getting more pronounced than ever. Months later, I got a whole other note saying there were yet more of dad’s belongings to pick up! After confirming this unlikely scenario with a phone call, I once again trekked all the way to south Brooklyn, only to sit there whimpering for almost an hour as the inept employees engaged in a comic scramble to find the haul. They weren’t even sure what it was! They couldn’t even find the woman who’d sent the notice! And she never responded to my messages, nor did the home’s director!

Alas, there was no trace of the stolen money either, but a letter came about that too. Not surprisingly, it said they’d looked around and couldn’t seem to find it. "The investigation involved a search of Mr. Musto’s room, closet, and surrounding areas," said the notice. Yeah, that’s how they stole it in the first place!

Note to self: Get hit by a truck on 70th birthday. Make sure it’s a clean hit.

Ouch. That's rough.

Someone famous once said: Every cloud has a silver lining. Ok maybe they weren't famous but they sure had a way with words. Your experience with Lutheran was obviously a mind numbing, jaw clenching, eye rolling pain in the ass (and not the fun kind), but if there is one silver lining in this cloud it is this: Maybe that truck will have you doing Lindsay doing Marilyn on it. And is there really a better way to go than being killed by your own genius?

I don't even want to start in on my horrible horrible horrible experience with the D*O*C*S shitpile, BUT suffice it to say that not only did I receive idiotic mis-treatment at the hands of buffoons with stupidly hostile responses to usual, normal and highly important questions; I was rudely and quite incompetently treated by everyone from security to medical staff - a "doctor" who claimed I was wasting his time with an ear infection without even looking at my chart or my body when I badly needed a CAT scan for a head/spinal injury which was then misdiagnosed as a spinal tumor - to billing, who threatened me with legal action for costs from medical testing I had to pay thousands for upfront BEFORE I could get any work done. I was eventually fortunate enough to make contact with a humane, intelligent responsible individual who took control of the foolishness and actually saw to my account and cleared up all the invented problems caused by moronity at the hands of the D*O*C*S staff. FUCK THEM FOREVER. NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH D*O*C*S. They will kill you.

Michael, I hope you'll not confine your outrage to this blog but will file some formal complaints about the incompetence, stupidity and callous indifference of these so-called health care workers. There are local and state boards you can make your complaint to, as well as advocacy groups. Don't let the fuckers get away with it! And once you've made your complaints, give the assholes at Lutheran a good hearty "vaffanculo!"

As one of the 47 million (uninsured but working) Americans myself let me share that I for a long time worked in the health care industry. The pay is the worst but my favorite was always the way the workers had an HMO and the Doctors lets just say...DID NOT. At least your dad has a good son and that counts for a lot.
