Raquel Tells How To Be Ageless Rather Than Aging

Posted by Michael Musto at 9:00 AM, June 19, 2008

This might be the first time there's even been a woman in a bikini on this blog

Busty Raquel Welch's Las Vegas show in the '80s was rudely dismissed by critics as "the sale of two titties." She's always gotten a bum rap in the press―she may not be Helen Mirren, but she does have a certain star quality, especially when doing a mime routine to "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head"―and now she's emerged as a wise and witty icon who can tell the truth about being pegged a sex symbol and how you survive that sort of thing. And that's just what she's doing with her Weinstein book, Secrets of Timeless Appeal, coming out next Fall for people like us. Harvey Weinstein said of the acquisition, "Raquel's book is a perfect addition to our list. I have always been a big admirer of her brains, beauty and energy." I just pray she's smart enough to address her pioneering role as a trannie (Myra Breckenridge), her screen test for Valley of the Dolls, and Lauren Bacall's reaction when Raquel got good reviews for Woman of the Year. I'm still holding my ears!

She has no talent whatsoever, but she does have star quality and that's all you need in this business.

Back when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth, I saw Lauren Bacall in Woman of the Year. In the opening scene, a bit of stage business had her swing out on a platform to start her first number. The thing stopped short and almost catapaulted her into my lap. It was the only laugh I had all night. Bacall stunk. She was a bimbo herself back in the 40's. What smack did she lay down on Rocky?

I want to hear about the rib.

I adore Betty, I mean Lauren, even if she does have a brazenly bitchy side. So what! I confess that I kind of like Raquel too, although I've heard from two of her former personal assistants that she was a First Class C--t as a boss. Unfortunately, more than a few personal assistants said awful things about mee too and baby, I WAS a First Class Twat Deluxe. I hope Rocky tells all about screwing that hot costume designer Ron Talsky in the 1970s. There's a story there, I'll bet.

all these old "losers" look good compared to today's hollywood "winners."

She's friends with born-again Jew Dyan Cannon who in the commentary for "Last of Sheila" compliments her and says they still hang out occasionally. Rocky has little to say on the dvd, but does admit she would have played the role more aggressively today. Raquel's belt got caught on some moving scenery when I saw her in "Woman". She recovered quite adeptly.

I'm sorry, but Raquel was great in the 1974 version of The Three Musketeers directed by Richard Lester. We watched it the other night and it has stood the test of time.
