The Worst Movie Ever Made Needs Your Help

Posted by Michael Musto at 1:32 PM, July 3, 2008

Xanadu went from being a shitty 1980 disco fantasy flick starring Olivia Neutron Bomb to a hilarious Broadway spoof 28 years later to a big old communal singalong Friday and Saturday July 18 & 19 at midnight at the IFC Center! Yes, at those aggressively wacky events, you can try to drown out the insanity by singing over ELO, Gene Kelly, and even Olivia with the help of the lyrics they'll hand you along with "a grab bag of props for interactive moments to coincide with the madness happening onscreen." Do you dare to not only endure this ditsy, glittery crapfest one more time, but to actually become part of it? Even scarier, are you willing to immerse yourself in this turd so heartily that you risk realizing the score is actually damned good?

IFC Center, 323 Avenue of the Americas at West 3rd Street, ifccenter.com.

It does sound like fun! I remember when I first saw that movie as a kid, and when Michael Beck flashed his nipples through his unbuttoned shirt as he rollerskated around, I felt all tingly inside...sigh...you have to believe we are magic...

This poster would look fabulous on No.One Time Square, facing north. BTW: Today is the tenth anniversary of my first trip to New York. I like to call it The Best Day Of My Life. An hour after I arrived, I was in the apartment of a stranger who happened to be a masseur at The Ballet. His small apartment was filled with the dancing slippers of, well, everybody. Two hours after I arrived, I had an invite from a female friend of his to see the fireworks from her apartment overlooking the UN. New Yorkers are the kindest, most wonderful people on the planet. Oh, and I noticed that day that you guys have some serious gum-embedded-in-the-sidewalk issues. No, but I love-love-LOVE this poster. I would like to see a return to THAT 'do. Ms. Musto, will you be our guinea pig?

This poster is full of nostalgia, girls. Look!- it's Olivia Newton-John's old nose! A tear!

It's the worst movie ever made---so far. It looks like there will be a "Friends" movie due to the success of Sex And The City, which means there will inevitably be an "Everybody Loves Raymond The Movie" or a "2 & 1/2 men, the movie" or " Who's the Boss" Or "Reba, the movie". Then we can judge the worst.

Posted by: Tim at July 3, 2008 3:52 PM

You're right, the score isn't bad, it's the fucking script and the "acting"!!

Posted by: zazu at July 3, 2008 4:37 PM

Wait, I thought the "Everybody Loves Raymond" movie was about the secret gay life of Raymond Burr, with Philip Seymour Hoffman in the lead, once again bravely portraying a homosexual.

Posted by: GiorgioNYC at July 3, 2008 6:44 PM

No, that's "Raymond Loves Every Boy In Fiji"

Posted by: Tim at July 3, 2008 9:29 PM

You say this is the worst movie ever? Bah.

You obviously haven't seen Australian bomb "Aussie Park Boyz".

Posted by: MedicinalCreativityPlant at July 3, 2008 10:58 PM

Worst movie ever made?? Nah, that title goes to "Can't Stop The Music"! That ode to the Village People. Recently, I had the misfortune of watching ALLLLL the way through! I couldn't stop cringing or saying "What were they thinking?" The "YMCA" number was by far the best thing about the film -- love me some athletic men. Wished I had just a compilation of Village People music videos instead. "CSTM" surely nearly caused the death of disco and the vp. Long live Disco and House!

I love the film. My friend saw it in the theater three times back in the day, each time on acid. I played the vinyl album this weekend and it still sounds excellent, learned the songs on piano and sang along as it was playing. Fun. Is the IFC the old Waverly?

Posted by: e.j. tweaker at July 7, 2008 12:35 PM

Thanks, Michael, for mentioning the show. I hope viewers at the sing along will embrace this as a sort of Rocky-Horror bad and not Glitter bad. Though Glitter bad is still soooo good.

Tweaker - Acid is pretty much the way to go

gmannla - Did you know that Olivia almost took a role in Can't Stop the Music instead? Imagine the pain.

Hey, I have to step in to defend the utter crapulence of Can't Stop The Music. This is truly the greatest "It's so bad it's unbelievably great" bad movie ever." Altovise Davis! Marilyn Sokol! Directed by Nancy "Ida Morgenstern" Walker! "Magic Night" Cocaine for miles! "My Time Is Now!" "I didn't invent it, I'm just in it!" "Leathermen don't get nervous!" Washington Square Park looking like Disneyland! Jack Weston saying, "Names! Names! Names!" Tammy Grimes! June Havoc! Bruce Jenner not having a clue! Obviously I own it on dvd. The Village people actually shot part of the YMCA video directly across the street from my apartment, just down the block from the then McBurney YMCA, now David Barton Gym, way back when. Ahhhh awful awful awful. Freakin' fantastic.

It was so awful -- to hear the critics say -- I never saw Xanadu IN SPITE OF MICHAEL BECK'S PECS. But I did buy a DVD of *The Warriors* at Wal-Mart for $5. Beck wears nothing on top but a leather vest, and you could almost swear the director had the hots for him. Oh, wait, that would be Freudian projection, wouldn't it?

Posted by: James M. Martin at July 10, 2008 8:39 PM

How can you mock a man like Michael Beck? He's so sincere!

Posted by: Phlogiston at July 11, 2008 5:26 AM

Ahem... for your consideration Young Einstein... Nothing but Trouble... Freaking GODSPELL For Chrissake.

Xanadu has some pleasant moments.
The worst movie ever made since being named in 1980 is "Plan Nine from Outer Space"
please give Ed Wood the credit he deserves as it made him famous

Posted by: Bryan at July 12, 2008 1:22 PM

"Cocaine for miles!"

There's no coke seen onscreen in "Can't Stop the Music", but it must've been a BLIZZARD backstage!

e.j.,
"Avalanche!!!!!!"
