Farewell, Queen of the Mudd Club

By Michael Musto, Sunday, Aug. 17 2008 @ 8:24PM

The Mudd Club was the grungy, fabulous White Street den of narrow-tied rock and rollers and too-cool-for-school performance artists that served as an equally amazing antidote to the uptown glitz of Studio 54 in the '70s. It's queen was Tina L'Hotsky, a good-time gal who was sort of the downtown Paris Hilton of that time, but way more cerebral--in fact, she wrote and acted (in Kathryn Bigelow's biker film The Loveless in '82), in addition to being an all-around bright eyed party queen. Well, I'm told that Tina just died of cancer and I feel it's important to remember her place in the clubland history books. I'll miss you, queen Tina.

Update: Here's the official death notice.

Christine Lhotsky

CHRISTINE LHOTSKY, 56, of Pasadena CA, formerly of Cleveland, died of complications from breast cancer August 16th. Beloved daughter of Genevieve and Jerome (deceased). Widow of Larry Mount (deceased). Survived by her son Noah Lhotsky (son of Mark Rovelli, deceased) and siblings Richard, Margaret Ulas (Robert), Maryanne Nase (Rick), Michael (fiancé Sheri), Joanne Cornelius (Cliff), Frank (fiancé Denise), Paul (Andrea), Mark (Lisa), Suzanne Hager (Brian) and the late Susan and Joseph, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. Christine was a loving mother and friend, talented artist and dedicated social activist. A Memorial Service in celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2008 10:00 am at St. Paul Shrine, 4120 Euclid Ave, Cleveland 44103.

I remember her. She was like the original Dianne Brill. But don't ask me who Dianne Brill was.

I remember Tina as the self proclaimed "Queen of the Mudd Club." This juvenile pursuit amounted to much the same as being the queen of the high school lunch room. Though I didn't know her personally, like Paris Hilton, she rubbed me the wrong way. When passing through the upstairs lounge, I remember how she would scour the crowd lingering on anyone who might be dissing her to a friend (usually me). The funniest gossip I ever heard about her, which turned out to be true, was that she kept her stash of Quaaludes buried in a vacant lot next to her building. After she moved to California Stephen Saben wrote update quips about her in Details from time to time. If you google her, there is plenty to read in reference to her creativity which now seems sadly eclipsed by her reign over the Mudd Club lunch room.

My name is Rose Sullivan and I use to work at the Mudd Club for a year. I was the barback mostly, sometimes I helped with the door and came in during the day to do the mailing.

Tina was funny, smart, talented and lovely. I loved working with her on THE LOVELESS and will always remember touring Paris with her and JoAnn Crawford when the movie showed at the Cinematheque Francais. It was a wonderful time and she made it special.

I worked at the Mudd Club 1980-81 and don't remember Tina very well because it seemed every night when getting to work I was fed some drug that had me high till I left work at 4am or so. It was a GREAT place to be in a great time in NYC. Farewell Tina!

kehoe says:

Noah—In her New York years, your mother was a gorgeous creamy-skinned Downtown Goddess with a distant gaze that was so hard to get out of one's mind. She mysteriously floated around the East Village adorned with costume jewels and wrapped in delicately colored gauze-the apotheosis of the Transcendent Slavic Muse. She was quite a person. I just heard about her passing—My sympathies to you.
