Sprouse To Hit Bookstores in Day-Glo

Posted by Michael Musto at 8:08 AM, August 8, 2008

Colorful designer Stephen Sprouse--who helped define '80s style for all time-- will be the subject of a book commissioned by his mother and executed by Mao PR's brother team Mauricio and Roger Padilha.

They certainly have the passion for it. As Mauricio tells me, "We wanted to come to NYC ever since we first saw Sprouse on Andy Warhol's 15 Minutes on MTV when we were kids. He totally inspired us and we would sneak into the city on the weekends to go to the Wooster St store and hang out there all day long.

"We never wanted to meet SS because we loved his work so much and we thought if he was mean to us that it would ruin how we felt about his work. So even though he told mutual friends that he had heard about how crazy we were about him and that he wanted to meet us, we never did on purpose."

But they certainly meet him now. The book, coming out on Rizzoli in January, has 256 Sprousey pages and it will have four different covers, each in a different day-glo color, which were inspired by the album cover Sprouse did for Debbie Harry's Rock Bird.

This all came about after Mrs. Sprouse saw the tribute the Padilhas did to her son in the fashion history bible MAO MAG. Says Maurico, "She contacted us to let us know how much she loved it and that she felt we truly understood his work."

But wait! Downer update from Mauricio:

"Cal Chamberlain, Sprouse’s male model muse (who also dated Debbie Harry), was found dead in his apt on Wednesday last week. It seems to be of natural causes and they are giving him an autopsy as we speak. He worked with us on the book but unfortunately he will never be able to see any of the 100’s of images of him modeling in 1988 for Sprouse.

"The saddest part is that not one of his friends know where his family is and they still do not know that he passed away. He was not in communication with his family and he never spoke to any of his friends in the last 15 years about them, so there is no one to claim the body as of now.

SO sad."

Bummer.

I LOVED Sprouse. He (along with Haring and Basquiat) made the '80s for me. But I never understood how so much visual flamboyance came pouring out of someone who seemed to be so shy.

I was saddened to hear about Cal's passing. He was my roommate's fiance in the early 90's. We lived in the Chelsea Hotel. I was with her when she met Cal at Show World Palace. I remember Cal was there sort-of body-guarding a female fr. stripper. Ron Jeremy took us there during the daytime. (He considered my roomie his best female fr. and put her in his docu. even). Of course, it wasn't a classy place and i remember seeing a female smoking a cigarette out of her cooch.

Anyhow! Musto wrote on his blog,"Fuck Facebook" last week but it seems it was thru FB that we found Cal's next of kin. Last Thurs. we were having a party and jokingly named it the "Fuck Facebook" party (after MM blog)at Belle de Jour. A guy i know thru FB named Marc came and lives near-by. The next day his status message informed of Mark's a.k.a. Judgecal's passing. I contacted Steve Lewis thru FB and sent him Marc's letter (posted on still active Judgecal C.'s wall) asking folks to call detective if they have any info. Steve found my ex-roomie and she gave info to police and they were then able to have someone claim the body.

Another big coincidence is Roger Padilha mentioned above (who i know from FB) emailed me yesterday about my extra Stooges tickets. FB again connecting people!

Highlights of official unofficial "Fuck Facebook" party: Musto came in his flip flops and socks and Andres Serrano (who came with a bevy of beauties...one which is his g-fr.) was careful not to reveal the controversy of his new work. (Coincidentally, Musto ran into Andres on the street the other day). One of my frs. showed up on rollarblades with a snorkel, swimmies, and an inflatable swan around his waist and there was a comedic magician doing tricks for fun. Yay!! We'll rename another party soon for another one of Musto's blog entries!! Yay!! I saw Musto last nite and he wouldn't allow me to say FB butit is closing in on him all around! Just wait: Facebook will be Time's Man of the Year 2009!! Yay!!

Although I have and will consider again dumping FACEBOOK, it was here moments ago that I found out about Cal. I photographed him with Steven and many others at Steven's Burnout '88 show that he hired me for.

RIP Cal you're hanging with Steven now.
