A Message From Shirtless Dance Singer Ari Gold

Categories: YouTube treasures

Ari Gold--who had Logo's number one video of the year--has spoken. And it's about his new video, "Human," directed by sex god Aaron Cobbett.

Gold sent me the clip for the song (a cover of the old Human League hit) and he generously included his intricate explanation of it. Says he: "I'm bringing the 'fairy' back into the 'fairy tale.' But instead of Narcissus drowning in his own image, he makes cool art with it. Since gay people are always being called narcissistic, I figured this gives the tale a less morbid ending...more Milk than Brokeback Mountain. Oh wait, Harvey Milk died too. Oh well. At least I don't die at the end of my video.

"It's also Little Red Riding Hood meets E.T. and somehow it all ends up being about our humanity, which in this day of being denied our rights, seems important, dontcha think?"

I don't know, I wasn't listening. I was too busy staring at my own image.

A brilliant collabo by two great NYC artists, Ari Gold and Aaron Cobbett. Very James Bidgood a la "Pink Narcissus." Do the kids even know the work of James Bidgood? Thanks for featuring such talented and relentlessly and unapologetically gay artists!

the naysayer says:

Covering 80s synth-pop artists hits is not art, sorry. Maybe the video's cool but it's not original either. Gay people have so much potential as artists and people like this idiot just regurgitate pop culture like Madonna, another overrated non-talent.

I refuse to. I have the old Human League 45 and I'd rather listen to that. Musto & the Must, how about posting Miss Ross's "Pieces of Ice" video?

Hearhear says:

I agree with scuntina and naysayer. This artist is a waste of time. He's a shameless narcissist who's coat-tailing on the strides the gay community has made and projecting the worst sort of image for younger gays to look up to - not to mention his exploiting his Jewishness. He is terrible self-promoter and describes himself as a "homofessional gaylebrity" - and I beg to differ. True, he is good-looking, but he lacks any sort of talent and after having seen him in concert and seeing his horrid dance moves, I don't think he could be described as a "dance singer". He should be flipping burgers in MacDonald's - not being celebrated for being a caricature of himself.

Josh says:

Hate to break the news to the venom spewing crowd but being one of the first artists in pop music to take the risk of being out IS making strides for the gay community--not riding its coat-tails. And not wanting to be a white-washed pop star is not exploiting his own Jewishness, but rather exploring it in new and interesting ways. This is an artist I am proud represents our community and I give him all the credit in the world for doing it on his own terms. If anyone takes the time to read his lyrics and see his work he has always expressed a powerful positive message about love and self-acceptance. But like anything good and new, it is always comes up against resistance and the responses here are proof of that.
