YouTube Treasure: Downtown in the '80s!

The Fabulous Pop Tarts--aka Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato--were an underground techno pop duo in the '80s on their way to becoming award winning TV and movie producers. Check out this time-tunnel clip of their infectious song "New York City Beat," with quickie video snippets by the late Nelson Sullivan, and see if you can spot the hot shots of the following Gotham legends, all in their most '80s-ish finery:

John Sex. A lounge singer extraordinaire, he kept his hair stiff thanks to a mixture of egg whites and semen.

Dean Johnson. The sardonic rapper/rocker had NO hair, but he did sport a saucy black dress and tons of tude.

Tish Gervais. "The girl with something extra"--and I'm glad she kept it because nowadays she's Brian again.

Christina. The crazy, scary drag queen who carried around a wig and petted it, calling it her baby. Who was I to argue?

And by the way, yes, that's me in three separate visions--with Holly Woodlawn, Albert Crudo, and at a dinner table. Can you believe I was so thin without doing drugs?

John Sex. That name brings back memories. I wrote an article for a gay rag about him in the early 80s. Went to his East Village apartment and met his snake. Seriously. He lived with a python who co-starred with him in his outre' club shows. Sweet guy, in my experience, and tons of fun to interview. Tom Jones and Mae West were his idiols, or so he told me. My only disappointment was that he didn't have his hair in that fabulous pompadour when we met. A real character, and one of the many we lost to AIDS.

I watched Nelson Sullivan's World Of Wonder on the documentary about Michael Alig quite a few years ago & enjoyed it WAY MORE than Alig's story. And I forced many, many others to watch it, too. Now THAT was a scene- and we have the late Nelson Sullivan to thank for being able to live vicariously in it for a few moments.

Hated them. They sucked and didn't rock in the least. They also sucked as DJ's at Danceteria. There's a reason they never had a hit or got a record contract, they couldn't sing or write songs.
