YouTube Treasure: "Glory, Glory" Judy Garland

Our country needs a pick-me-up song right now, and I think I've found it. It's Judy Garland's version of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," done on her 1960s TV variety show in order to inspire a distraught nation after the assassination of JFK. We've been shot in the groin lately by economics and other crises and we need to hear the ultimate gay icon elevate us with her stirring song of survival once more.

According to Mel Torme's book, The Other Side of the Rainbow With Judy Garland on the Dawn Patrol, Judy insisted on doing the song in the wake of the devastation caused by her Presidential pal's cold-blooded murder. Mel said her performance was "uneven musically, imperfect technically," but it didn't matter in the least because Judy nailed the song's passion with her radioactive genius. As he wrote, "The emotion in the studio was purer than Ivory soap. The audience rose in a body and gave her the most genuine standing ovation I have ever witnessed."

Her truth is marching on.

Never liked her singing style. She doesn't rock.

alex says:

Does "scunt" stand for "stupid cunt?"

Judy Garland was the kind of star that this world will probably never see again, one that shined so bright she lit up the entire world.

Jonster says:

I agree. Judy was a friend to us gay folk. She was surrounded her whole life since Daddy was supposedly a part-time FOD. Then she married Vincente Minelli, who bore a striking resemblance to David Gest, and had a daughter who actually married David Gest. But first Judy set her up with her first gay husband, Peter Allen. Of course, then Judy went on to single-handedly found the modern gay civil rights movement by passing away. She said we would fly the flags at half staff out in Cherry Grove. We did. But we also took off our heels and beat the police over their heads with them at Stonewall six days after Judy died. Those girls were in mourning and it was so not the right time for a police raid.

southern dave says:

Judy Garland's was THE voice of the twentieth century and its most thrilling entertainer. Not because I say so, because there she is, proving it time and again in her movies, concerts, recordings and those utterly remarkable TV shows and specials.

I saw her once, in person, at the Houston Astrodome. Her opening act: The Supremes (with Miss Ross). Every moment of Garland's set was electrifying. She was very funny, too.

My favorite Judy Garland story:
Someone once asked Judy if it was true about fellow MGM star Ava Gardner -- was she really a nymphomaniac?"
Replied Garland: "She is if you can quiet her down."

Vagino Dickson says:

Might sound heretical to many but my first Judy Garland exposure was A Star Is Born, and all I could think about was how mediocre her performance was. Eventually I managed to come around to Judy's accomplishments by focusing on her recordings and avoiding her films (another heresy: Wizard of Oz sucks). And speaking of another Star Is Born...everyone, run to your nearest video shop, pronto! The Yentl DVD's out!

Vagino Dickson says:

Sorry, no Yentl until end of the month. Had some kind of panic attack when Amazon sent me an email announcing its availability. Must have been the 25-year wait.

Joe Hartman says:

"Vagino" seems to be one of those people that thinks you elevate the status of one star when you dish on the talent of another. Sad to say it ain't so "Vagino", but at least you express your opinions in a tactful and diplomatic manner.

Vagino Dickson says:

"Joe" babe, I love Judy, or rather the idea of Judy. It's just her MGM vehicles I couldn't stand. The segue into Babs was inadvertent, but for the record, I'm really a Callas groupie. They're all fab, I could listen to them sing forever, but I'd rather avoid a lot of their films - even Callas in Medea.

Don't like those cabaret style singers, Sinatra, Diana Krall, Norah Jones, they bore the shit outta me! I need a loud beat and blaring guitars...I need...CHER!

the voice of insanity says:

Once again, your taste is stereotypical and up your ass! Why not run a Kim Carnes video clip instead?

southern dave says:

What's with dissing the Garland films?

"The Wizard of Oz," "Ziegfeld Girl," "For Me and My Gal," "Meet Me in St. Louis," "The Clock," "The Harvey Girls," "The Pirate," "Summer Stock," the BEST version of "A Star is Born," "Judgement at Nuremberg," "I Could Go On Singing"?

Ethan Mordden and John Fricke, weigh in on our girl! You, too, Musto!

Zip past the dumb comedy sketches and her TV shows are like one, big Carnegie Hall concert!

southern dave says:

I neglected to mention John Cassavetes' powerful and affecting "A Child is Waiting," where Garland demonstrates her power and range as an actress. Her improvised moment at the end of the film with a mentally challenged child is infinitely touching and amusing. Trying to coax him from a car, she calls him "Darling" and the kid says, "Darling?" and Garland laughs and keeps chatting with him. Garland was so in the moment and Cassavetes so smart not to say "Cut," that they got something remarkably genuine on film.

Vagino Dickson says:

Just a matter of taste, southern dave. I won't argue that a lot of people, even straights, would go for those movies. My idea of a gay old time at the flickers would be Divine and Russ Meyer vixens and '70s porn. Didn't mean to impose my preferences on anyone, just wanted to clarify what it was about Garland I admired. Haven't seen Child is Waiting and In the Good Old Summertime (some consider it her best, though not musically) so I'll be getting around to that too, eventually.

The Late Tallulah Bankhead says:

Although I often agree with Vagino Dickson, he's wrong about "A Star Is Born" (the Judy version, not that borefest with Babs Streisand): Judy is incredibly affecting and moving in that film. It's one of her best, although James Mason doesn't die nearly fast enough. As for "Scunt Boy," that's a stupid and follish concept. No, Garland didn't "rock," but her voice had incredible emotion and power that "rockers" like no-talent Britney and her ilk will never have. And yes, Alex, "scunt" does stand for Stupid Cunt. I first heard the term used in the 1950s, to describe Mamie Eisenhower.

Vagino Dickson says:

Tallulah, you are the goddess of La Daily Musto. If you say my perception of La Garland in Star Is Born was in error, then I officially doubt my soundness of judgment when I watched it, many years ago. If I ever get around to sitting thru it again, I'll keep my mind as wide-open as my name - anything to be restored to your good graces, luv. But give me this much, at least: no redemption for Wizard of Oz, OK?

La Grand Puta de Santa Ana says:

We are praising Judy and The Late Tallulah Bankhead on this day of gay! The Late One is right, unlike today's lightweights, Judy Garland could be propped up on bottles of pills washed down with booze and still wow the crowd. She was remarkable considering she was so heavily drugged during her days at MGM. Uppers, downers, dance dance dance. She could do it all in one take. My favorite of her MGM films is actually the Pirate. It's so cinamatically artsy and Gene Kelly is in tights most of the movie.

I didn't know that the Supremes opened for Miss Garland. I have often wished that Miss Garland and Miss Ross had performed together.

I didn't know the Supremes opened for Miss Garland. I have always wished that Miss Garland and Miss Ross had performed together (and that it was filmed/recorded).

I was there also. The Supremes didn't open for Judy they were on the bill together. In 1965 the Supremes already had six number one hits and Berry Gordy wouldn't have allowed them to be called an opening act. On the other hand I saw the Supremes where Stevie Wonder was the opening act, as he hadn't hit his stride yet with a string of hits. After that Willie Tyler and Lester(comedy act) opened for the Supremes
