Why Lesley Gore Is Important

In the percolating 1960's, Lesley Gore exploded onto the charts with her sad but rockin' "It's My Party," which soared to number one when she was all of 16. A creamy-smooth vocalist with a beguiling twinkle, Lesley followed that with a slew of other teenybopper hits, from the sequel song "Judy's Turn to Cry" to the proto-feminist anthem "You Don't Own Me"--but she chose to enter Sarah Lawrence College rather than pursue all the multimedia offers being thrown her way, singing mainly on the wacky weekends.

That was fine--she kept on making it her party and paved the way for other musical permutations to come. Years later, in 1980, Lesley emerged on the Fame soundtrack with "Out Here On My Own," a plaintive ballad she co-wrote with her brother Michael Gore, which got an Oscar nomination for Best Song. (The title tune, "Fame," by Michael G. and Dean Pitchford, won the trophy, but we love the Lesley/Michael tune just as much--even more so when we're "feeling blue".)

Lesley's career developed extra interest in 2005, when she not only released new music, but she revealed on the record what I'd long heard buzzed about--she's a lesbian! In fact, she lives with her longtime partner--but no one owns her!

Of course you can own a piece of Leslie's gift by going to see her in New York in May.

BlueCollarDad says:

I had a friend once who was vice-president of the Lesley Gore fan club. In my day, I have met Madonna queens, Bette Davis queens, Mae West queens and Marilyn Monroe queens. I belong in several of these categories myself. But a Lesley Gore queen? Ugh. I saw Lesley a few years ago on PBS singing Leaving On A Jet plane as a duet with I-forget-who. She was totally off-key. She never could sing, and she hasn't gotten better with age. Most people today have no idea who she was, or what she did. I think she's better off that way.

Here's Lesley's fabulous (and "totally-live-and-not-lip-synching") performance of "You Don't Own Me," courtesy of YouTube.

This woman is the REAL DEAL!

"Judy and Johnny just walked through the door
Like a Queen with her King
Oh what a birthday surprise
Judy's wearin' his ring!"

They just don't write 'em like that anymore.

Mark says:

You guys are way to hard on her.

She was of her time and her songs made a lot of people happy and I am one of them.

Let's discuss some of today's pop singers and whether they can carry a tune--if tune can be used to describe a lot of what's out there.

So let's hear from those Leslie fans who love her stuff--and that crazy flip she wore!!

Sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows forever!

Jonster says:

Yeah, I liked her. She was a good singer. I actually do love her Judy and Johnny songs. They're so campy. I wonder if she and Dusty Springfield ever shared a cup of tea together.

Bruce says:

Love Lesley. But like a lot of people whe they age, she has lost her ability to carry a tune. A minor talent who had a great career. She was no Petula Clark or Dusty Springfield

Bruce in Ithaca says:

I beg to differ (as much as it pains me to contradict a fellow Bruce). Listen to her "Golden Hits" album and there is a wide range of songs, from the archetypal Judy/Johnny songs to Marvin Hamlisch's "Sunshine, Lollipos, and Rainbows," to the proto-feminist "You Don't Own Me"--and, on bonus tracks on the CD, "California Nights," which has a kind of yearning, plaintive dykey quality. I saw her a number of years agon on a cable special "Ladies of Rock n Roll" and she could still sell her songs--granted, the notes weren't held as long and the eye shadow too heavy (a la Kaye Ballard), but she was THERE--unlike poor Frieda "Band of Gold" Payne, who needed Belinda Carlisle, for Gods' sake, to sing along with her to give the impression tthat she still could carry a tune.

Lesley forever!!!

Phil O. says:

I dig Gore's 60s hits, but I think Bryan Ferry took "It's My Party" from a great piece of pop to a totally transforming experience.

Venson Thomas says:

Sorry but she never did much for me. If this is all about "let's support out local lesbian" -- what about Lana Cantrell or KD Lang? They can sing circles around Gore.

My, my, my . . . how fast they forget.

Posted On: Friday, Apr. 24 2009 @ 11:08AM
sally forth says:

I hardly think KD Lang is in the same nostalgic circle as Lesley Gore. Lesley is pure '60s gold.

Jonster says:

But Lana Cantrell on the other hand, oh wow. Haven't heard that name in ages. I remember moving into NYC, getting my heart broke, taking to my bed for a whole day, blinds down, Lana Cantrell on the stereo singing "Ne Me Quitte Pas" ("If You Go Away"). So so gay. Mom calls: Honey what's wrong? I tell her I just got my heart broke. She said: Don't worry. Plenty of girls out there.

We had "the talk" the following week.

Dalida says:

I'm pretty sure that "Ne me quitte pas" better translates to "Don't leave me."

scruffy says:

Jonester gave the name of the song in English. Titles are not always translated literaly, hon.

Musix says:

I just saw Lesley's show at Feinstein's and she was terrific. She did many of her old faves (much to the delight of the enthusiastic audience that included Bill Boggs and Joe Franklin) and a wonderful mix of her newer stuff and some great covers (especially liked The Way You Look Tonight)

This is one of the most expensive clubs in NYC and it was packed so I guess she's doing something right. People are not paying top dollar for crappy acts in THIS economy.

Her voice sounded great--it always had a hoarse quality even back in the day, and it still does. And carry a tune? Uh, yeah she seemed to have no problems there.

And by the way, she has great audience rapport...something the "young" singers of today know nothing about. They should catch her act and learn from one of the greats.

Lesley is one of a kind! She rocks it at Feinsteins at the Regency- saw her opening night- Clive Davis was there and raving about her. Could this be a comeback?

KT says:

Lesley rocks. I once read that my favorite song she ever sang (Maybe I Know) was also HER favorite song she ever sang. She's a gem, and I hope she continues to sing and tour.
