Dom DeLuise: Gay?

I was so Carrie Prejean-ed out last week that I neglected to note the sad passing of Dom DeLuise, the portly and gifted comic actor who elevated such films as Cannonball Run, Smoky and the Bandit II, and Fatso, along with a whole bunch of those boozy Dean Martin roasts of people who obviously planned to die while screaming with laughter in closeup.

Dom was a campy riot who stole Haunted Honeymoon in full drag, and even in men's clothes he rang more gaydar bells than a boy bander with a plus-sized girlfriend. "But Dom was married with children!" you exclaim, fuming. Yeah, and so were...I don't know, a lot of people. That doesn't always mean all that much. Sometimes they're gay but just wanted to find some refuge in that kind of family. Sometimes they're bi. Sometimes they're deeply closeted.

But to me, Dom DeLuise always screamed gay gay gay! Anyone else?

Dom was a big, fat gay who felt comfortable in "opposite" marriage. There are alot of them out there thanks to bigots like Carrie Pre-cum.

Tish says:

Well, I do recall reading some issues Dom had in Atlantic City years ago...the issue was a hotel employee (perhaps a bell man). Seems Dom made more than a couple of physical overtures towards the kid and lawsuits followed. When that story broke, there were other people that came forward with similar experiences (real or fame whores - who knows?).

Tish says:

I read a story years ago about Dom pressuring a bell cap in an Atlantic City hotel. In all the local papers in NY, it mentioned that Dom's wife was present in the hallway while Dom was being verbally rough with the kid and ordering him in the room. I may be wrong on this part, but I believe the kid was pushed against the wall. Dom was not a slight guy, and the kid was scared by his aggression. I also remember reading similar stories after that, but who knows if they were real or just fame whores. Creepy either way. I watched all the accolades when he died but not a peep about the Atlantic City law suit.

Dom Deluise belonged to my health club in LA, though I never saw him exercise. I think he came for, uh, massages. He liked swanning around in a towel and was actually quite campy/girlish, flashing people in the steamroom. As a matter of fact, he spent a lot of time in there. All in fun, I think. Incidentally, it was the same steamroom where John Travolta met Paul Barresi during "Perfect" (which was filmed there). I think he had an "arrangement." I always wondered about Dom's (and Charles Nelson Reilly's) friendship with Burt Reynolds.

I don't know, and don't care, if Dom DeLuise was gay. But I think Musto is classless to refer to Miss California (Miss Prejean) as a Nazi. This is a favorite tactic of the left when someone disagrees with them. Just call them a Nazi. Nazis tried to take over the world and killed millions in the process. How does Miss Prejean fit in that category?

Posted On: Monday, May. 11 2009 @ 11:54AM
Southern Dave says:

Enough with the Miss California nonsense.

I interviewed Mr. DeLuise twice and he swept me up in a big (and I do mean big) clinch and then dropped me on the floor and we did the interview. Nice, funny guy.

You're right to say Musto was classless to compare Carrie Prejean to the Nazis. That's insulting to the Nazis!

GayMovieFan says:

Puh-leeze, Mary! My favorite image of Miss DeLuise was in Mae West's last film, Sextette, where he played Mae's personal manager. His very presence in that bomb makes his sexuality questionable.

Anyway, in one scene, he does a vocal tribute to Miss West while singing a song called, if I recall correctly, Honey Child. At the end of the song, he plants a kiss on Mae's life-sized cardboard cut-out, but not before doing a very gay impression of Miss West by fluffing his hair, tilting his head, gritting his teeth and letting out a Mae-West type signature groan -- "Oooohhh". I couldn't have done better myself, and I have been reknowned for my perfect impressions of La West since the days of Myra Breckinridge.

Case closed. If he wasn't gay, I've been sucking on lollipops for the last 40 years!

David Ehrenstein says:

Dom DeLuise's scene in "Sextette" is unforgettable because -- Mae not being up to snuff that day -- Dom sang to cardboard cut-out of her!

Now I don't want hear ONE WORD about the cut-out being livelier than Mae. She was a great woman, and adored gay men. That's why she agreed to do this film for the gay couple who produced it (They had never made a film before -- or since -- they just worshipped Mae West) and that's why Dom DeLuise was in the cast.

I love him doing "The French Mistake" in the grand finale of "Blazing Saddles."

UhOkay says:

If Dom was, it only makes me like him all the more.

I don't know why some people (OK, maybe a lot) think Sextette was such a bomb. I've been able to enjoy it on a number of occasions and find it funny and original, unlike countless other movies that "critics are rushing to praise" - blah blah blah.

So what if Mae had her senior moments, how can you resist an 83 year old saying "I'm the girl who works at Paramount during the day, and Fox at night."

Funny how so many really stupid self loathing closet cases manage to find this blog and read it voraciously on a daily basis. If I was straight I wouldn't bother reading a blog aimed at the gay subculture at all.

Tim, thanks for quoting the lyrics from my favorite Mel Brooks scene ever..DDL in "Blazing Saddles" as a tyrannical but brilliant director berating a group of chorus boys who are struggling to perform a tuxedo-and-top-hat laden musical number....

I don't want to sound like an NYU film school professor, but Dom's sexual ambiguity was one of the reasons why he worked so beautifully with a butch Alpha male like Burt Reynolds.

God Bless Dom DeLuise...he was one of my favorite actors and brought joy to millions of people!

Another favorite Dom moment: He did a commercial for Saran Wrap or something. The final scene showed him fretting over a platter of food the size of a wagon wheel, saying, "Oh, I hope it's enough..."

Here's all I know....

I was a young teen in the Valley of LA, I was waiting for my best friend at the arcade [remember those?] back in the early '80's

When my friend walked in late, he said:

"you wont believe it, Dom Deluise just tried to pick me up..."

We both shrugged over it....no great revelation there.

How Dom knew my friend had a huge schlong, I'll never know. I only knew because we were in gym class together.

In the mid 80s I lived in Manhattan around the corner from a porn theatre (the Metropolitian, on 14th st) primarily known as a MSM (men who have sex with men) orgy place, with all kinds of antics going on inside. As I was leaving the place one day, who do I see paying his admission but Dom DeLuise! So, ah, I don't think he was going to just watch the movie...

Man, went to Paul Revere Jr. Highschool near Brentwood Cal. And you can chose to believe this or not, but in the early 80's Dom Deluise
would "troll" that section of Sunset Blvd. looking for boys ditching school and hitchhiking. I have been a passenger in the car, and know of one guy it also happened to.
I am emphasizing IT NEVER WENT ANY FARTHER THAN THIS, But he was known to put his hand on the young boys leg/knee as they rode.

PATRICK says:

Dom always made me laugh. The guy was funny as hell or Heaven. Now that SSM is becoming law in more and more places,I think cover-up marriages will become less frequent.I can imagine some gay folks who have a female best friend marrying for that companionship and possible desire for children.Im guessing that the wife would need to look the other way if he has a boyfriend. But I do thinks ,now that SSM is less of a big deal, these arrangements will be less common.DOM is probably making GOD laugh like Hell or HEAVEN!
