Obama Sends Gays To The Back Of The Bus Again

I never thought I'd agree with the conservative advocacy group the Log Cabin Republicans, always assuming that "gay Republican" was as much of an oxymoron as "casino culture." But they've hit the gay nail on the head by chiding Obama for his latest attempt to placate the LGBT community with his reception yesterday. According to reporter Rex Wockner, Charles T. Moran, who's the Log Cabin Republicans' spokesperson, came out with this damning statement:

"It is pretty entertaining to watch the President throw himself a 'Pride Party' after taking a pass on acting upon several issues that would have fulfilled his promises to our community. I'm not quite sure what he's actually proud of. Hollow words and false promises do not define a legacy or an administration--only actions and follow-through.

"This administration has had several opportunities to show its commitment to the LGBT community and make life better for millions of Americans. Hosting this 'sideshow' reception only rubs salt in the wounds of so many that actually believed his message of 'hope & change'."

Snap, snap, score one for the conservative gays! Hell-eaux!

Obama's been trying hard to grovel for LGBT acceptance after hideously upholding the Defense of Marriage Act and making us his enemies. Why couldn't he have just been consistently pro-gay from the start, as he promised to be? What's he afraid of?

bette crawford says:

Obama is a typical politician, ie a lying snake-oil salesman who cannot be trusted at all -- Unlike Coretta Scott King, Obama due to his Muslim and African roots agrees with the majority of blacks that civil rights should not apply to gays -- and indeed gays are to be "defended" against up to the point where putting on an idiot pride event will appeal to them, mental weaklings that they are -- to save losing votes, Obama would dance in assless chaps for the next Pride event and put his daughters up for "Chaz Bono-style operations --

Obama's the latest in a long-line of democrats to crash head-first into the military/industrial complex's antique but still sturdy wall of denial. Bill Clinton made the same promises out of the gate back in '92. Don't Ask Don't Tell was Clinton's compromise when he realized it (out gays in the military) wasn't gonna happen. Obama must have realized he'd have the same problems as Clinton.

Shameful!! He's trying to play it both ways--deny us equal rights, then court us as his friends. And the idiots in attendance were screaming and cheering their gay heads off! They probably would have applauded the holocaust.

Obama will not upset all the blacks in the bible belt who voted for him and whose votes he wants in 2012. He is a phony just like all politicians. If gays would keep their pants up and instead march to the White House then something would be done.

the Log Cabin boys are just buffoons - the organization is almost totally funded by a liberal democrat. It proves stupidity isn't just a straight trait - it's a conservative one.
If you saw Obama's public statement - he renewed his support, and declared there was more work ahead to do what needs to be done. He will make it happen.
His chief of staff Rahm Emanuel saw what happened to Bill Clinton when he tried to tackle the gays in the military issue without adequate preparation. It was a big problem for months, blocking action on many other important issues. Don't ask don't tell was a compromise to get beyond the republican roadblock defending the "traditional" military. The Log Cabin boys didn't stop their party from using that familyvalues wedge issue.
I'm glad that the prez is focusing on keeping the economy afloat in his first 6 months. Stopping the second Great Depression vs. improvements on gay rights at the federal level seems like an easy choice.

Mike says:

Sorry guys, he's not going to spend his political capital on you when he has the Economy, Cap and Trade, and Health Care on his plate. He's trying to solidify the tenuous grasp on power Democrats have and build a super-majority in 2010. Then, maybe, just maybe you'll see a bold move. But probably not. I wouldn't expect anything radical until after he is re-elected in 2012. This is just the political calculus. You can accept it and move on, or rail against it and be miserable. Lastly, gay marriage will never be decided upon at the federal level. From a legal standpoint it is much more likely that straits would lose all of their federal benefits and the Govt. would cease to recognize ANY marriages. The Govt. should not be in the marriage business anyway.

Greg C says:

Michael,

Don't get caught in the Log Cabin Republican trap. They are trying to turn the LGBT community against Obama. He has been in office less than 6 months. Anyone who knows anything about the federal government knows that change takes time. He is trying not to fuck-up like Clinton did. Give him and chance and stop letting the gay republicans use you as a mouthpiece. Do you really think that McCain and Palin would even be discussing this issue?

Posted On: Tuesday, Jun. 30 2009 @ 4:38PM
roisters says:

I love all the bullshit excuses: "He's thinking of the long term." "He's really for gay marriage. He just can't say so." "The Log Cabins want to turn you against Obama. He's got your best interests at heart."

It's all hogwash designed to cover up his fucking us over and breaking his campaign promises!!!

Posted On: Tuesday, Jun. 30 2009 @ 8:30PM
Jonster says:

I think Obama's a good man and a good president so far, especially considering the alternative. We all know "political promise" is the oxymoron of all oxymorons. I heard him make his promise. I knew he couldn't deliver. Bill Clinton was far more ruthless and savvy than Obama and he couldn't do it. If you look at gay marriage as a portion on Obama's plate, we're kinda shoveled in there between the meat and potatoes.

As usual.

Meanwhile, some guy too ill to work can't access his boyfriend's medical benefits, the partner of a man killed in Iraq can't claim his dead mate's pension or benefits, can't show up on the base, basically. Highly-praised Farsi and Arab speakers are being kicked out of the army by the dozens.

Why can't we look at other countries where the concept works. Most European nations either guarantee gay soldiers the right to serve openly with protection and some have no restriction on it but no protection either, a broader version of Don't Ask Don't Tell.

Mantan says:

"Obama will not upset all the blacks in the bible belt who voted for him and whose votes he wants in 2012."

What about all the whites in the bible belt who voted for McCain do you think they where voting in favor of SSM? I guess there are no blacks who are gay?

If President Obama pushes for SSM and DADT (I'm in favor of SSM and for ending DADT), and the Republicans use this a a ralling point and the Democrats lose big how long do you think it will be before any Democrat will be willing to take up the issue? What about the Blue Dog Democrats do you think they will go with President Obama on SSM and DADT?
If SSM and DADT takes over President Obama's agenda and nothing will get done thanks to the obstructionists Republicans (veto proof majority in the Senate not withstanding).

As someone who voted for the only candidate who made many promises I'm sure she would have kept-Cynthia McKinney- I'm not surprised at Obama's stance. The Dems are no different from the Repubs. They are chicken shits who backed down on many chances to really force change in this country. Watch them fuck up healthcare too. Keep plugging away at your Congress people and write the White House. If enough people tell him this is not acceptable, change may someday happen. It's up to each and everyone out there to tell these people we've had enough of their shit.

Buyer's regret...All you gays are so naive...just because we're gay does not mean we're all automatically gonna vote foe a democrat candidate. You guy came in ur pants after he was nominated and now...!? Next time do a little more in depth research on the candidates. In politics, What u hear is not always what u gonna get. This is a lesson well learned...do not vote for a particular candidate or party just beacuse that's what ur SUPPOSE to do.

>"Hollow words and false promises do not define a legacy or an administration--only actions and follow-through."

Since this is so much better than systemic demonization and pure self loathing, I don't think we need to take a cue on Obama's cautiousness from the likes of the Log Uncle Tom Cabin Republikkkans.

Who are funded by the Gill Foundation for the clueless poster who asked. That's why there's a _new_ homosexual Republikkkan group also with four members now. Praiz!

It's good for Democrats as well as for those genuinely on the left to chide Obama, but he ain't done yet. And to say he's the same as McCain and tundra trash Palin is a mark of derangement.

We were all so excited to get a president who could speak in full sentences that we forgot to listen to what he was saying. Obama is screwing up the economy even more and he is NO! friend to the gays. Unfortunately no politician is going to go out on a limb for the gays.

And can we please start calling him "mixed race", why is it when someone has one molecule of black in them we call them black?
