A young gentleman approached me at Pieces bar the other night and we had a nice chat. It turned out he was Drago, the doorman at the bar XES, who famously denied me admission because I didn't have ID. Crazy or just doing his job with an exacting attention to detail? The latter, I'm so sure, and he was funny enough to reference my writeup of the incident by saying to me, "Hi, I'm the freakazoid."

Now that that's all settled, I have a whole new battle based on a tired old one. I'm still getting flak for tearing up Miss California Carrie Prejean for her anti-gay-marriage stance. In The Nation, of all places, they talk about an MSNBC appearance I made on the subject, callling me "waspish misogynist Michael Musto."

Well, let me make my position clear: I was making fun of the fact that Prejean was walking around in breast implants, having done semi-nude spreads, while holding up the bible in condemning gays' right to marry. I was mocking the hypocrisy of such good-book-toting, as well as the absurdity of the pageant--which paid for her implants and regularly paraded her around as a piece of meat--having a problem with her having shown her breasts (though I also understood that it was a matter of contract breaking, so I sided with them over Prejean).

Got it? I truly thought the whole thing out. Implant that.

Surprise surprise.

Does anyone really read the Nation?

I might imagine the good conservatives having a "thou shalt not kill" pageant to strut their bible thumping stuff. But then ....who would be the contestants?

nostradavid says:

Just as Michael isn't THE voice of the Village Voice,
Katha Pollitt isn't THE voice of the Nation.
Both magazines carry a wide variety of opinion.

"In The Nation, of all places, they talk about..."
When did one writer become a "they"?

Michael, she's a professional writer on feminist issues. I'd guess that gives her a different perspective on your humor about Miss California than most of us guys. I thought it was all funny. Carrie's little brother and all the other trolls that harrassed you here for weeks seemed perturbed.

The article was a pretty serious one for her,
about the terrorist murder of Dr. George Tiller.

Making fun of any womans boobs is probably a red flag for those broads. Imagine if you'd been sitting across from Rachel Maddow instead of Keith - would you have used the same jokes? That would take some big balls. (I love Rachel.)

That wasn't much of a slap at you anyway -
two words ain't enough for feudin'.
Compare those two words to the deserved bitch slap she gave "Andrew Sullivan, who knows as much about women's reproductive lives as I know about soliciting bareback sex on the Internet..."

Giorgio: "they've never been good on gay issues."
Yeah - they only put out one Queer issue a year, totally devoted to gay stuff (like the Village Voice does). Their gay film critic, Stuart Klawans, is one of the best.

"A professional writer on feminist issues" is defending a beauty pagant contestant??? Shouldn't she be blasting the whole process rather than attack those who make fun of it and its hypocrisies?

Vagino Dickson says:

Being feminist (or black, or whatever your oppressed affiliation is) gives you a license to be homophobic, or dumb, or selfish? Then again, it's the Nation, living proof that "conservative left" need not be an oxymoron.

Stuart Klawans is gay? He's gay-friendly, but don't think he's actually a 'mo. Where'd you get that?

They do a gay issue now? Who knew. Since I stopped subscribing a while back (couldn't stand the Democratic Party groupie politics) I guess I've missed this.

I used to write for The Nation, mostly gay-themed pieces. I had 2 editors who were supportive but Navasky and some of the other key people definitely were not. As one editor openly said at a meeting I attended,"there's a somewhat narrow view here of what is 'political,'" i.e., meaning mainly economic and race issues, as well as electoral politics.

Pollitt's a good example of a straight feminist woman who's borderline homophobic. I'm still pissed at her for trashing James Purdy because her delicate sensibilities were offended by gay and sadomasochistic scenes in his novels.

Sloan says:

i'm with David E. You no longer have to defend yourself, Mr. M.

The hypocrisy and the irony that you so cleverly (and often) pointed out only flew over the heads of the ignorant and bigoted. And who better to speak on the behalf of those gayhating misogynists than a dumb bimbo with big (fake) boobs and an even bigger mouth.

and as for the freakazoid: some things are just unforgivable. someone should demote him to barback.

Drago says:

Someone told me yesterday that he was surprised Pieces was such a hot spot. Hours later a good friend of mine informed me that there was a follow up of the original story.

I recently started a new body of work that deals with my social difficulties. I am almost tempted to call it the Freakazoid Series. Hopefully I'll run into you again before my next art show so I can invite you in person. There will be Diet Coke and no ID checking at the door.

When I saw you at Pieces, I did say that maybe next time you will write something nice about me. I guess "young" will do. These days, it seems to outweigh smart or talented anyway.

And as for Sloan: get a life idiot, will you.
