Is Bruno Good For The Gays?

Well, sort of maybe not, but also kind of yes. I generally enjoyed the film and feel Sacha Baron Cohen comes from the same school as Mel Brooks, one where you deflate a stereotype by embracing it so hard it bursts. I also feel that, while in the old days I was railing at damaging LGBT portrayals in Silence of the Lambs and Basic Instinct, nowadays there are way more representations out there, and at least this one is wildly sexual, as opposed to all the bland, sexless gay stereotypes you usually see. So while Bruno has a mildly sour quality that's hard to shake, it also ends up being very gay positive, so I say see it and learn.

And now, let me remind you of my remarks in the current column:

"Like Borat, Bruno has a dumb but reasonably likable person exposing everyone else's idiocies by projecting his own. The movie is uneven and thinner than a supermodel with a vomit bucket, but the set pieces are a scream, from the kinky sex scenes with dildo machines and champagne bottles to the jibes at celebrities (like 'Brad-olf Pitt-ler' and 'the Fuhrer,' a/k/a Mel Gibson).

"Making Bruno a lousy parent who uses his African-American baby as a dick magnet is an uncomfortable choice--then again, Borat was intimate with his prostie sister--but the movie ends up being a putdown of the ex-gay movement and a celebration of male bondage, I mean bonding, so you'll probably be head-uber-heels about the message.

"By the way, the LaToya Jackson scene was snipped 'out of respect for the Jackson family,' so now we know exactly where Sacha Baron Cohen draws the line. (Interestingly, Universal refused GLAAD's plea to trim a shot of Bruno with the baby in a sex-filled hot tub, but caved in to Jackson family values.) It's too bad because it was the one celeb cameo where I thought the person might really have been punk'd (unlike the Ron Paul bit, which is funny nonetheless): It had Bruüno taunting LaToya by asking her to act more like Michael, as if that were possible. Now that it's been sliced off like a famous nose, LaToya gets overshadowed by her brother one more time."

F. Packer says:

All right: Sasha Cohen is a disgusting no-talent, whose "movies" are essentially a string of illegal activities (trespassing, harrassment, disorderly conduct, fraud) which are filmed and presented as Art. Dozens of the innocent people who were tricked, conned or scammed into being the butt of this shithead's unfunny "jokes" have sued him, to no avail. Mr. Cohen's core beliefs seems to be: 1. Eastern Europeans are backward and funny, 2.Americans are backward and funny, 3.Homosexuals are backward and funny, and 4.Americans who react normally when they are tricked into being filmed in outrageous situations are funny.

The most guilty party in all of this is Universal pictures, who figured out that if you throw a four-gallon bucket of shit at the wall, two or three ounces will stick, making the vile act profitable.

Anyone else who attempted any of these moronic stunts would be immediately arrested, and rightfully so. Art does not include the ambushing and humiliation of others in lieu of an original thought.

"No talent"? That doesn't really seem accurate. He definitely has a gift.

I think he's screamingly funnny but often goes for the lowet way to a punchline. Can't wait to see Bruno. Borat had me on the floor, especially the wrestling scene with that man.

Being a shameless contrarian and devil's advocate myself, I like anything this guy does.

baretta says:

while not the offspring of a multi-billionaire, like that other no-talent Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Baron-Cohen comes from a rich family who sent him to Cambridge, where his cousin is a famous researcher on autism (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) -- Baron-Cohen is not just unfunny, he is overtly cruel, in his own autistic world of pranks like "Jackass" but without even the strained attempts to be sexy of THAT mess -- Baron-Cohen just takes the narcissistic exhibitionism of Woody Allen, who is convinced teen girls lust after him, one more step and shows off his body parts as if anyone cares to see them -- F. Packer is right -- he has no redeeming value and Musto must think that Jeffrey Dahmer was also great for the gays because he made people think of gays and talk about them --

I am BEHIND baretta and F. Packer on this one. And get this, without a hardon--I am so proud of myself!

should have left the Jackson footage in. Who cares if Michael-child molester-Jackson died. People die! Sacha is fantastic and he doesnt molest children. Yes he's good for the gays and I say Bravo! For those of you who find it offensive....dont watch! This is the best comedy since John Waters...pre-Polyester. Its refreshing to see entertainers push the limits.

Barkley says:

Hate him, don't think he's funny. His humour is sophomoric. He also seems to have preoccupation with gay stuff and male bodies, which makes me wonder if he's really gay.

nytheatreguy says:

CKH is probably a child molester, which is why it's so desperate to make MJ one.

No real interest in this film, though I do think Sacha is a talented performer.

"Fashion has to be a second skin, which suggests the size of the cock."
Bruno quite literally demonstrates the above, one of several scathing lines from Rosa von Praunheim's incendiary first feature, It Is Not the Homosexual Who Is Perverse But the Society in Which He Lives (1971), a savage attack on gay-male self-destruction.
- from the great article by Melissa Anderson this week.
Sacha is just so cute in Bruno drag.
Love Him! Funny and Sexy!

Savannah Montgomery says:

I'm with Mr. Musto on this one "... where you deflate a stereotype by embracing it so hard it bursts."

Cohen did the same with his Ali G. character who was so incoherently stupid you weren't quite sure who/what he was lampooning.

ckh: Thanks for reminding us of John Waters...who was bashed in exactly these same tones when he started...who is now bashed for being too mainstream.

I am looking forward to experiencing the film Bruno, enjoying it with some popcorn and a soda, and then going on to live my life without having gotten my panties in a wad over something so ridiculous. This makes me happy.

Thank you, Sacha Baron Cohen for bringing something fun to the cinemas. I can't wait. :)

I saw it last night and thought it was bust-a-gut funny, if a little hollow, as Musto says. GLAAD hates it, which is always a good recommendation.

Sacha is doing EXACTLY what John Waters, the Farrelly Bros., etc should be doing--shocking peole and making them squeal with laughter at the same time. Brava!

Sacha Baron-Cohen is one the best satirist in today's entertainment buisness controlde by P C. Police. He's hilarious & brutaly honest about the BS of today's society. You don't like him ,too bad for you F.packer & Co.

CMG says:

If homophobes go buy tickets to their films and get uncomfortable with his sex scenes then they are not only ignorant and show it off to more clear-minded people (Even if the theatre is dark we can technically see you with the flash of film and our hearing) but they also put $10 bucks into the film.

Bruno was a great character on TV and I am looking forward to seeing it. I just will wait for bootleg/DVD because I never have good movie theatre experiences.

It is like saying if Divine was good for Drag Queens when she did things that were just as outrageous if not more disgusting than any SBC character.

We celebrate Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin as cartoons but aren't they lampooning the average white American father?

Oh get over it! He is funny and I can't wait to see the film.

I don't know how I would feel if I were gay, watching someone so overtly characterize - but if I felt that it was going to be offensive, I just wouldn't go see it. This is America, if you don't like something, go do something else.

LOVE SASHA, brilliant, timely, hysterical

Having no brain you would laugh. He's making the money so you are the bigger fool. Ali G is unfunny and has the media eating out of his pocket. I notice the Daily Mail is a staunch support and one wonders why as he is crap??
