Jackson Memorial Worthy of a Master Showman

The Michael Jackson all-star memorial concert at the Staples Center was so riveting I expected Michael to pop out of the shiny, silver coffin and do one last moonwalk. Janet and LaToya really turned it out fashionwise (and dignity-wise); old-time Motown legends like Berry Gordy, Stevie Wonder, and Smokey Robinson added class and talent; and if it was a little jarring to see an accused rapist onstage (Kobe Bryant) and a reforming girlfriend kicker in the crowd (Chris Brown), that's showbiz, kids.

Jennifer Hudson tesified with her singinging and was fabulous, though she was surrounded by cruise-ship-style dancers signing and doing circle dances as if in one of those old Academy Awards production numbers. And though I enjoyed Magic's story about how Michael loved KFC, it seemed like the biggest free product placement in history; they should shower him with buckets through eternity. Not surprisingly, some of the other testimonials seemed like whitewashes, as it were, exclusively painting Jackson as a Christlike figure and eternal victim. Brooke Shields particularly meant well, but she seemed to be doing an actorly exercise, saving the biggest waterworks for the end of her speech. (At least she was smart enough not to suggest there was anything more than a fun friendship between them. The two understandably shared a whole lot of laughs.)

As the event wound down, Shaheen Jaforghal from Britain's Got Talent came out gave a starmaking performance that made you glad they didn't book Susan Boyle. And then came the family, one of the Jacksons bringing the affair to a whole new macabre level by saying his dead twin in heaven should now get a hug from Michael. (Before that, Stevie Wonder had said Michael died because God needed him up there. That should end all speculation as to exactly what happened.)

And now, the important thing: A British paper reports that Tippi Hedren told two of Michael's old animal friends--the tigers--that their daddy had passed on. Pray for them.

Tippi Hedren rescues abandonned Tigers, that's why she's caring for the ones that were left at Neverland.

Does anyone want to listen to Brooke Shields?
What a waste of money to even bury the pedophile. He was a demented clown and now that he's dead everyone is coming out of the woodwork to boost their own careers. Michael Jackson was a deplorable person, thankfully he cant blow little boys anymore. The whole Jackson family should be put in a rocket and shot into space. Michael and his family epitomize greed and arrogance. Dont know why anyone looked up to him, he was a loser.

I saw your commentary on Channel 5. You're the only one who tells the whole truth! Brilliant artist, creepy person.

Yeah, what was with that signing number for the deaf? It was like that old Debbie Boone number on the Oscars.

And anyone think Michael's little "daughter" (through other parents) was rehearsed in her emission of sobby sentiment?

Yay Tippi!

But Brooke spoke really slowly and emphatically like she was trying to show (a) I am a great actress and b) I am a caring person.

But she did seem sort of heartfelt. Mariah was out of place.

blahnik, you and the anonymous cowards on the internet disgust me with that suggestion.

Paris was the only thing that kept it real. The other people who went up there practically met him once.

Cha Cha Walters says:

Brooke Shields knew him for years. Just as he was really starting to go crazy.

Everyone who came after that didn't know shit. He had more "friends" than any recluse I've ever heard of.

People like Usher, whose "career" is on life support, are trying so fucking hard to bite off of Michael Jackson's fame. It's sickening.

Usher, Al Sharpton, Jermaine Jackson...what a bunch of creeps trying to make themselves lemonade out of Michael's rotting lemons.

Al Sharpton was particularly gross, making Michael out to be some kind of racial hero. At least he's a good speaker, though. Berry Gordy put me to sleep and then Smokey Robinson came out and told the same joke.

I didn't even watch the memorial. I figured I'd catch the good stuff from the web banter.
Leave it to Miss Jackson to break yet another barrier and have a funeral that is sooooo au courant. So 21st Century. Every major media outlet came to a halt to broadcast this thing. Half the world's population watched this live, in one format or another. More people watched this than saw Princess Di's funeral. Sony or whomever owns the rights to his stuff will soon reap cash rewards as everyone from Lindsey Lohan to Brittney issue 'tribute' material. Did anyone say 'Anniversary Edition of the Wiz?"
Oh dear oh dear, the reissued box sets of it all....

Hated talentless idiots Usher and Brooke Shields. Mariah Carey sounded like shee-it! Loved Stevie Wonder, Jermaine. Why don't they ever play "I Just Can't Stop Lovin' You" and "Muscles"?

This was no memorial. It was a frikkin' variety show. All that was missing was the jugglers and London Lee. Nice to see the two professional negroes there, Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson. What a trainwreck of a family.

Your first sentence pretty much sums up what I was thinking! Loved every minute, cried buckets, feel a lot better now.

J-Hud was amazing, she kept it together even though the event brought up her own recent losses; not to mention the fact that she's very pregnant and therefore very hormonal. I would've slipped on my own tears and fallen headlong into the coffin...

A decent memorial for a very talented, yet deeply flawed man. I amazed at how angry so many folks can be, and the comments on this site just confirms. Many of you must have been abused children yourself, with the vitrolic expression you write. If he was a pedophile, at least express joy that he's not around for that purpose anymore.
how evil you are.

My God---what a bunch of disrespectful, hateful comments on this site. NYC has sooo many undercover racists disguised as liberals---it's sickening. NONE OF YOU were on the jury, NOR did you have access to the thousands of transcripts, video testimony, etc. granted by Judge Melville to FORMER Michael hater Aphrodite Jones, in the book "Michael Jackson Conspiracy". I've noticed those who over-critique this FUNERAL and a gentle soul like Michael, all seem to come from the same demographic. And---compared to Michael's overwhelming support in CD sales, dedications by leaders of nations----YOU PEOPLE ARE IN THE MINORITY. NONE OF YOU VISITED THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN W/CANCER/AIDS...NONE of you were friends w/Sammy Davis Jr, Fred Astaire, Marvin Gaye, Marlon Brando, etc. Michael spoke 2 times on 125th street in Harlem (in Al Sharpton's headquarters) about people on this site. So, Michael would've enjoyed Al Sharpton's words. But, I expect these comments from people who jumped on the Michael bandwagon in the 1980's---when Michael had consecutive #1 songs since 11 YEARS OLD (1969). So, you guys can disappear in obscurity and hatred.
