Most parents wouldn't accept money in exchange for having their child raped! This abuse was to have taken place on serveral occasions so why did the parents keep sending their child back?

Somebody pointed out to me recently that the age of consent in Hawaii is 13 (don't know if this is true or not) as it is in parts of Europe (ditto). Makes you wonder - if Michael was so guilty, why didn't he stalk his "prey" where he could have legally gotten away with it, and thus coughed up potentially less, uh, settlements?

I don't excuse those who would take advantage of a child, but when I was 13, I was already out of the closet, and looking for guys who would give me what I wanted. I mean, I was the aggressive one; I tried desperately to get laid. No takers - despite the widespread homophobic belief that so many gay men are pedophiles, back in the mid-sixties (when there was NO talk of gay people, period, much less talk of child sexual predators) I haunted all the places that I could find that gay men were supposed to cruise (parks, tearooms, you name it). I met plenty of gay men, but almost all of them told me to wait until I was older until I began to fool around. When I was 15-16, I was big for my age, and was able to pass for 18. That's when I really started to have fun, but even then, most older guys were very nervous about how young I was.

I too was rarin' to go at age 13 and fantasized about my brother's 20-year-old friends and neighbor's older sister's mid-20s boyfriend. Plus the lifeguards at the nearby public pool.

Pedophilia is child abuse, no question, but the notion that everybody's an innocent lamb at age 12 and a victim is not the case 100% of the time. Inappropriate for a 20-year-old to be with a 13-year-old? Yes, but I would have loved realizing my fantasies, it wouldn't have traumatized me. The trauma occurs when one of the parties is unwilling or unaware of what's happening. As it was, it didn't happen for a few more years with someone my own age.
