Why Is Gay Club Culture So Low?
A lot of gays adore opera, ballet, and special exhibits at the Met, but get them in a bar or a nightclub and their taste suddenly sinks lower than a rat's rectum. Why is it that walking into a nocturnal establishment automatically means the intellectual level plummets to sewer-level and everyone ends up in wet T-shirts, shooting Ping Pong balls out of their Speedos?
The gay clubbing scene will apparently never let go of the following demeaning yet indestructible cliches:
*Drag queens making jokes about giving head to Puerto Rican busboys
*Drag queens imitating Whitney/Britney/Mariah's meltdowns
*Hot ass contests, with the MC making leering remarks
*Shirtless bartenders on steroids serving watered-down drinks
*Waiters in silver hot pants unable to make any small talk except for "Want a Jello shot?"
*And beer pong, for Chrissake!
Yes, these are all comparable to lowdown activities that take place in the worst straight places, but can't we rise above and show our class for a change?

I agree! Beer pong is the lowest, especially when gays do it.
Posted On: Tuesday, Jul. 7 2009 @ 3:40PMIt's embarrasssing to go into a gay bar and see this lowbrow shit going on. But I don't feel like going to Lincoln Center either. I'll just stay home.
Posted On: Tuesday, Jul. 7 2009 @ 3:42PMWhat'a wrong with getting a little drunkiepoo and indulging in some beer pong and ass contests? God, lighten up, queen.
Posted On: Tuesday, Jul. 7 2009 @ 4:15PMI have to disagree with:
"A lot of gays adore opera, ballet, and special exhibits at the Met"
that's only true if a lot = a tiny minority.
although the gay percentage may be slightly higher -
most gay folks are no different than straights -
all their taste is in their mouths.
what about a nice tea dance. in most southern cities i've lived in you could go for after work cocktails and DANCE, you could go on a saturday or sunday afternoon and DANCE. it's been YEARS since we've been able to do that in the city and i am WAY too old to take a disco nap and go out at midnight and endure all the crap you've mentioned. BRING BACK THE TEA DANCE PEOPLE!

Posted On: Tuesday, Jul. 7 2009 @ 6:50PMThe gay scene is just dead in NYC. In fact, NYC is probably the most boring large city in the US. The condo craze and the influx of fat rich girls dreaming of the Sex in the City lifestyle have all but ruined NYC. Dont feel bad that the gay scene sucks, because so do all the other scenes. If your unfortunate enough to live in the city, just keep watching TV and pretend you like your life.
I recently moved away from NYC after fifteen years of living there and I must say good riddance. Too expensive and not worth the money plus the men on the West Coast are far better looking!!
Posted On: Tuesday, Jul. 7 2009 @ 7:09PMRonald Reagan gave all of America his own Alzheimer's by destroying the educational and library systems with massive cuts -- gays were especially affected and cling to dimwits as their heroes like the hog Edmund White, instead of great gay writers -- call it intellectual suicide on the part of gays, but most gays must genuinely believe they are doomed to be stupid -- why else would they opt for idiot media like the Logo TV network, or the glossy magazines which treat Musto so badly?
Posted On: Tuesday, Jul. 7 2009 @ 7:51PMThis comes from not having any other social arenas other than bars to hang out in.If there were other places homosexuals could be themselves than it would be a moot point. However in their defense gay bars are a place where everyone can let their hair down and shall we not stop there? If you want class ...go to college.

Posted On: Tuesday, Jul. 7 2009 @ 10:04PMFor what its worth, some of us are still trying! Thanks for the continuing inspiration Michael. I left NYC 12yrs ago for Ptown, then 8yrs ago for SF. Its a cycle and it pops up over and over. Its just not easy to make new stuff happen without capital and the most creative usually have the least money...then the moneyed are afraid to lose it!

Posted On: Tuesday, Jul. 7 2009 @ 10:27PMI think you're hanging out in the wrong clubs and bars.
I've had hot, fun, spontaneous times with my friends at bars in Brooklyn and Queens. Wild times at Spectrum (now no more), Brooklyn Meatpackers, Excelsior, and all over Jackson Heights.

Posted On: Tuesday, Jul. 7 2009 @ 10:43PMBesides what the frick?
Going to a strip club with a bunch of twats gyrating in your face is classier? Man I'm not going to buy into your guilt. If it's your guilt .....you own it!
Now be fair MM:
the poor, uncultivated, uneducated riff-raff geighs have the right to pursue happiness too.
dj, agreed!
I have loved a good tea dance too. Having grown tired of the Splash now the Drip, and not willing to trek to Fire Island, where tea dances have been an institution, in NYC I opt for the monthly 718 SESSIONS featuring DJ Danny Krivit. Danny plays it all from the classics to the freshest with amazing skill.
The party starts about 6 pm (discount cover for early arrival) and ends in time to not wreck my Monday mornings.
You might like knowing they are by no means exclusively gay but rather multi-culti fabulous were boy-on-boy boogie is welcomed.

Tea Dances are dead in The New South as well. I moved to NC almost a decade ago and was shocked by the gay scene.
Firstly -- I was shocked that they had one to begin with.
Secondly -- I was highly disappointed that, instead of being driven by creativity, inclusion, individuality & good dance music.... it's driven by racism, exclusivity, assimilation, predictability and the lowest of pop culture. It's like one big, gay episode of The Hills -- but with a Southern hip-hop soundtrack.
Tea Dances and good conversation were nowhere to be found... instead I found scads 18 year old twinks in Prada & lip gloss dancing to Flo Rida and trying to "hook up" -- while simultaneously voicing their general disdain for black men ("...but you're different").
And no -- these shenanigans (as disappointing as they are) don't DARE begin before midnight.
Continue to take your chances on NYC!
