What's Your Fave Fashion Film Evah?

This has been an amazing year for fashion documentaries, with Valentino and The September Issue pulling in scads of fashionistas spending the $12 they really owe on their most recent pair of Gucci loafers.

As we dive hat first into the insanity of Fashion Week, do tell me: Are either of those frou-frou chronicles your favorite fashion film of all time?

Or is it The Devil Wears Prada--which some bitches say is way closer to the truth than The September Issue

Funny Face. The movie that urged us to "Think pink!" even before it was the navy blue of India.

Lipstick, with Margaux Hemingway highly convincing as a model, if not necessarily as an actress

Or Mahogany, with Diana Ross giving up kabuki makeup, flowing getups, and bad dialogue to be with her man?

Mahogany! It is gorgeous! If it had subtitles, critics would have said it was a work of genius!

"American Gigolo" -- everything you need is wrapped up in the opening credits:

Richard Gere -- wearing Armani -- driving a Mercedes 450 SL -- with the music of Blondie singing, "Call Me."

Now that's hot! (Or, as Cole Porter would say, "haute"!)

(Too bad the rest of the movie was such a wreck!)

UhOkay says:

Can an actor be singled out for fashionable mention in a film that has little to do with fashion?

For instance:

Grace Kelly's succession of jaw-dropping outfits in "Rear Window"

Tippi Hedren's green outfit in "The Birds"

Cary Grant in a double-breasted suit and pretty much anything

Audrey Hepburn in the opening scene from "Breakfast at Tiffany's" - and anything else she was in

If memory serves, Clark Gable caused a sensation in "It Happened One Night" when he took off his shirt and wasn't wearing an undershirt - apparently men across the nation stopped wearing undershirts - scandalous!

etc.

Sister Prayjean says:

FELLINI'S ROMA

If you can't tolerate Fellini's larger-than-life approach, the sometimes-garish colors, or the circus atmosphere, you'll probably find Roma insufferable.

But fans of Fellini will be in seventh heaven, especially during some of the wonderful set pieces--a music dance hall performance that's interrupted by bombing during World War II; a papal fashion show that's so surreal it must be seen to be believed;

Southern Dave says:

The third version of "Back Street," starring Susan Hayward as fashion designer 'rae smith' (all lower-case letters, very chic).

At her big Paris fashion show Vera Miles, as the drunken wife of Susan's lover John Gavin, orders Hayward's showstopper wedding gown, to be delivered to -- "although she'll never get to wear it -- Miss rae smith!"

Gasp!

Susan, identified in front of a roomful of dress extras as Gavin's "Back Street" wife!

Is it a Ross Hunter movie? DUH!

Lucy Gallant (1955) with Jane Wyman, Charleton Heston, Claire Trevor, and Thelma Ritter.

An unappreciated classic.

september issue ?? stocked full of madison avenue bullshit -- 800+ pages with just over 100 as content -- the rest proffering schlock as such it would be difficult to make a fashion film in many places reduced to skeletons with little spine and very little meat when it comes to character.

madison avenue bullshit -- much like dreadful charity ventures which should really be the september issue....if you ever want to encounter the vapid and fallacy of the fashion cliche -- try working with some of the non-profits i've encountered. it makes you want to scream AMBER ALERT.

Certain moments in films like Michelle Pfieffer in Scarface and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffanys come to mind.

Weren't movies like Rebel Without A Cause and The Wild One fashion films in itself because they set trends? Same with Bonnie & Clyde.

^^thanks Southern Dave, loved being reminded of that film. Especially since I saw Miss Heyward chew some scenery and rave at some Africans in the Snows of Killamanjaro the other night. She wanted (Gregory Peck) to LIVE!

I agree with Sister Prayjean about
FELLINI'S ROMA !
My favorite fake documentary,
from the hookers around the bonfires on the loop,
to the papal fashion show hallucination.

another Fellini fashionfest is:
FELLINI'S CASANOVA
the film won an Academy Award for Best Costume Design 1977, with the Oscar going to Danilo Donati.

and don't forget:
LA DOLCE VITA
winning the oscar for Best Costume Design: Black-and-White (1960).

Say what you will about the film Mahogany, its success ushered in a renaissance for make-up and fashion for women of color(WOC).

All of a sudden companies like Maybelline discovered WOC as consumers.
