Faye Dunaway

Faye Dunaway Is a Big, Old Diva--Namely Maria Callas

The last time I interviewed Oscar winner Faye Dunaway, I asked her what was taking so long with her proposed film adaptation of Master Class, in which she would recreate her L.A. stage role of opera diva Maria Callas.

Faye looked as confused as when Mommie Dearest started being promoted as camp, and told me it hadn't taken long at all. But it had already been in the works forever! And that was 10 years ago!

Well, Faye obviously gets what she wants and is willing to wait for it because she's finally doing the movie!

And what do we think about it?

At this point in her life and career, will she still resonate as the great and quirky Callas?

Will Zoe Caldwell--who brilliantly originated the role on Broadway--be even more devastated than when Maggie Smith got the film version of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie?

Will this go straight to Landmark Sunshine Cinemas?

Muscato says:

Oh, call me a sentimentalist, but I think it would be nice for poor Dunaway to get one last non-Z film credit before it's all over. I know it's hard to believe now, but she truly was marvelous, once upon a time, even if she's been floundering pretty much nonstop since something like 1990.

She is big; It's not her fault that the pictures got small. Even so, you couldn't pay me to see most of what she's done of late. Anyone up for The Gene Generation (2007) - which finds the onetime star of Chinatown fourth-billed in a Bai Ling movie?

This sounds like the most quality thing she's been attached to in decades. Even if it's small and headed to the Angelika, it's based on an acclaimed play and it's at least not a reality show or sitcom.

Yay, Faye!

Michael,

You are a sentimentalist.

David Ehrenstein says:

I saw it with Zoe Caldwell here in L.A. a number of years ago. And who played the student who Callas attacks only to have her return in the last scene and "nail" the aria?

Audra MacDonald.

No surprise she's a star today.

As for Faye, a friend of mine lives across the street form her and says the greatest perfromance he's ever seen was Faye arguing with the workmen repairing her roof.

So glad she's finally getting to do this.
Who's directing?

Paul Haggis I hope.

Faye's a true actor - even though some of her roles may not be compatible with her stature, she works because she loves to act.

Tragically Greek says:

Based on the preceding observations and comments, I can see why 'La Dunaway' identifies with 'La Callas'.

"When my enemies stop hissing, I shall know I'm slipping."

"First I lost my voice, then I lost my figure and then I lost Onassis."
- Maria Callas

Vagino Dickson says:

Speaking of Callas and Onassis, how about a play, or film, or opera - anything - about the way that Kennedy bitch stole the only man Callas lived for, who ironically was totally unworthy of her anyway? It would make a great trans-Atlantic epic, with all the glamorous touchstones - wealth, talent, beauty, greed, neuroses, great cities, high fashion. And I'd watch it in a heartbeat, but only if it gives our Callas the decent treatment she never got in real life.

CMG says:

I can only imagine with all that surgery her Callas will be as good as her Mae West. Did Master Class actually get good reviews?

Southern Dave says:

The last good thing I saw Dunaway do was VERY good -- a "Columbo," in which for the first 45 minutes you thought Dunaway and her lesbian lover had conspired to kill a gigolo. Then it turns out that it's Dunaway and her daughter and the all-too-deserving victim was doing them both. THEN Columbo falls for Dunaway and lets HER take the rap and lets the daughter go. I think Peter Falk may have directed it, too. Good enough to be a big-screen movie.
