The Oscar Buzz Is Deafening

2009 is still in full swing, but I happen to know just which films are going to get nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award next year.

They are:

Up in the Air with ever charming man of many hats, George Clooney

Up, which has extra relevance due to headlines about "balloon boy"

The Hurt Locker, for once a bombing movie that's not a bomb

An Education, which glamorously teaches you to stay away from con artists

Precious, the little 350-pound movie that could

And that's it--there's your five. No, wait! They've expanded the category to 10 nominees! We need five more! Oy!

Well, let's throw in The Last Station. You can't lose with Helen Mirren as Mrs. Tolstoy.

And Clint Eastwood's Invictus about Nelson Mandela--a no-brainer.

And Tom Ford's A Single Man, a designer movie if ever there was one.

So now we need two more! Will they fill out the category with District Nine? The Messenger? Nine? The Road? A Serious Man? The Lovely Bones? Inglourious Basterds?

How the fuck should I know?

Are "Up" and "Up in the Air" two different movies?

I think Nine is a lock and probably The Lovely Bones. There's got to be at least one BIG Hollywood product, like Star Trek: the Resuscitation. I think The Last Station and A Single Man are unlikely. A prestige foreign film (non-English language) is a possibility.

Weinstein better work his magic on Inglorious Basterds. Christopher Waltz and Melanie Laurent need to be nominated for acting.

I saw preview of The Road. That movie looks too intense for Oscar, much like Children of Men that was ignored.

I think Nine is a lock for everything. The buzz for this movie is greater than Chicago and even Marshall's rather pedestrian Memoirs of A Geisha got nominated for quite a bit of awards.

Invictus will get nominated, aside from Gran Torino getting inexplicably ignored last year the Academy loves Eastwood. Add based on a true story with Nelson Mandela and even if it is a sports movie of a rather anonymous sport in America, it will definitely be nominated.

Academy also loves George Clooney so I see him get nominated.

Academy loves the Coen Brothers though I was not that enthralled with No Country For Old Men but I won't let that cloud my judgment in that film.

Invictus: The Magic Negro genre restyled as epic drama.

Up Next: The movie version of "The Audacity of Hope," with Will Smith in the Bam role and Jack White as David Axelrod.

"Nine" is far from a lock. The buzz is mixed and the movie was bumped to January release (despite opening a bit before that for Oscar consideration).

How about the Jackson film "This is it"?

The Hurt Locker really kicked ass.
A Serious Man has the best trailer
(plus Jewish subjects always do well).
Up isn't a lock for best animated feature-
Ponyo by Miyazaki was great fun.
George, Ewan and Jeff could all be nominated for
The Men Who Stare At Goats.
Christoph Waltz in Basterds.
Willem Dafoe in Antichrist.
Das Capitalism should get a documentary nod.
Avatar will be big by Christmas.

I'm rooting for Precious! I live in the Midwest, and I doubt I'll ever see it, but from what I've read between VV and the Times, it sounds like quite the rollercoaster. And any movie where Mariah Carey will look like that -- sans makeup, looking kind of like Amy Fisher, a la 1991 -- I say go for the gold!

CMG says:

I don't know where people are getting this negative buzz/rumors about Nine. The website is up, the stills/songs have made it online, and if they moved the wide release from Christmas then it would have announced as no media outlet has said that. The buzz has been the opposite. Some diehards of the show will take it hard over so many songs getting cut but this movie is supposedly blowing away people who do not consider themselves musical theatre fans.

Apart of me wants Jackie Earle Haley to get nominated for Rorschach in Watchmen but I doubt I will ever see another GN/Comic character get even nominated again.

claire de lube says:

Nine was moved from a Thanksgiving release to Christmas release.

But that's neither here or there.

More to the point: Some people on "All That Chat" saw an early preview and weren't raving at all. Apparently it's no "Chicago."

But I'll wait and see for myself.
