A Toast To Tovah Feldshuh

Broadway types lined up to honor four-time Tony nominee Tovah Feldshuh at the Friars Club the other night, where a lot of the jokes were about her birth name (Terri Sue Feldshuh) and her current, more Hebrew one. "She was actually born Ann Quinn," claimed toastmaster Freddie Roman, "but her manager said 'No one can pronounce it.'"

By any name, the original Sweeney Todd, Len Cariou, was a riot, singing, "Attend the tale of Terri Sue. But call her that and she'll say 'Screw!'...The demon actress from Scarsdale."

And the demon herself dropped the earnestness she'd been praised for all night and did a fascinating number as Golda Meir as a Borscht Belt comic, wearing a Gypsy-like headdress that made us wonder if Golda's real birth name was Mama Rose.

An offbeat, entertaining mitzvah of a night!

Yay, Tovah! She's one of the underappreciated people who make Broadway shine.

Loved her in Golda's Balcony. Didn't care for her in Hello, Dolly, but she tried--she's always out there trying and swinging and giving it 1000%

Anybody remember Terrence McNally's "It's only a Play," where the line, "Somebody named Tovah Feld-shoe" got a big laugh?

Well, a laugh, anyway.

I've enjoyed her movie roles (particularly in "A Walk On The Moon"), but she's also played an ethics challenged circuit judge/attorney on Law & Order to great effect. One thing about every role she inhabits: she seems to eat up the screen with her presence. Powerful. I envy anybody who's seen her on stage.

I wish they'd release her early 80s film "The Idolmaker" on video.
