Can you name all the actors and actresses who have appeared in three or more Oscar winning Best Pictures?

Can you name any of them?

Better yet, can you do it without a google search?

I'll start you off with a couple of examples and I'll even name the films:

Jack Nicholson was in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Terms of Endearment, and The Departed.

And Shirley MacLaine was in The Apartment, Around the World in 80 Days, and (yep) Terms of Endearment.

Now fill in the rest!

Jimmy Stewart? Tom Hanks?

I have no idea. Not without a google search. And I'm busy today. Getting veneers at the dentist.

Meryl Streep:

"Out of Africa"

"Kramer vs Kramer"

I know there's a third one, but I can't think of it right now.

"Deer Hunter." Duh.

I did a google search.

Vagino Dickson says:

Clark Gable - It Happened One Night, Mutiny on the Bounty, Gone with the Wind
Dustin Hoffman - Midnight Cowboy, Kramer vs. Kramer, Rain Man
John Cazale - Godfather I and II, Deer Hunter
Morgan Freeman - Driving Miss Daisy, Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby

It's really mostly a boys' club. The only female I could check up other than Meryl is Talia Shire, lucky enough to play support in the Godfather films and Rocky.

Bill Huelbig says:

Diane Keaton (The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Annie Hall).

I thought of an Oscar question earlier today, without checking on its accuracy:

Who is the only director to win Best Director two or more times who has never directed an Oscar-winning acting performance?

I think it's Steven Spielberg.

Bill Huelbig says:

Jack Hawkins (The Bridge on the River Kwai, Ben-Hur, Lawrence of Arabia).

Talia Shire- Godfather Part I & 2, and Rocky

I think it was Oliver Stone who won for Platoon and Born on the 4th of July but didn't have any best actor winners... let's not forget Leonardo Decaprio having been in Titanic and Departed.

CMG says:

Redford was so close. He directed Ordinary People but was in The Sting and Out of Africa.

Would Charlton Heston count for Ben-Hur and The Greatest Show on Earth but also his show-stopping cameo in the Best Documentary, Bowling For Columbine? I hear crickets.

Bill Huelbig says:

Mike: Oliver Stone's two Best Director movies didn't have any Oscar performances in them, but he did direct Michael Douglas to an Oscar in "Wall Street". No actor or actress has ever won an Oscar for a Spielberg film. He's still relatively young - it's not too late.

Peter says:

Morgan Freeman

"Driving Miss Daisy"

"Unforgiven"

"Million Dollar Baby" (for which he also won his Oscar)

Posted On: Tuesday, Nov. 3 2009 @ 6:14PM
Peter says:

Sorry, Vagino! I just noticed you already mentioned Morgan Freeman.

Posted On: Tuesday, Nov. 3 2009 @ 6:16PM
Vagino Dickson says:

That's OK, Peter. (Don't Peters and Vaginos go together?)

Not that it matters much, but what's with the absence of women? If you count the Godfather movies as one entry (which is done by many critics polls), you'll wind up with only good old Meryl Streep in the running. I'd like to call it sheer coincidence but something just tells me there's more to it. (And that same something says I have better things to do actually.)

ptommy says:

John Cazale was the first person I thought of, only because of another trivia question I was asked (and had no clue to) just a few weeks ago--

essentially, every movie he was in (only five, I believe) was nominated for the best picture Oscar.
