I thought of an Oscar question earlier today, without checking on its accuracy:

Who is the only director to win Best Director two or more times who has never directed an Oscar-winning acting performance?

I think it's Steven Spielberg.

Jack Hawkins (The Bridge on the River Kwai, Ben-Hur, Lawrence of Arabia).

Hugh Griffith (Ben-Hur, Tom Jones, Oliver!)

I think it was Oliver Stone who won for Platoon and Born on the 4th of July but didn't have any best actor winners... let's not forget Leonardo Decaprio having been in Titanic and Departed.

Redford was so close. He directed Ordinary People but was in The Sting and Out of Africa.

Would Charlton Heston count for Ben-Hur and The Greatest Show on Earth but also his show-stopping cameo in the Best Documentary, Bowling For Columbine? I hear crickets.

Mike: Oliver Stone's two Best Director movies didn't have any Oscar performances in them, but he did direct Michael Douglas to an Oscar in "Wall Street". No actor or actress has ever won an Oscar for a Spielberg film. He's still relatively young - it's not too late.

Not that it matters much, but what's with the absence of women? If you count the Godfather movies as one entry (which is done by many critics polls), you'll wind up with only good old Meryl Streep in the running. I'd like to call it sheer coincidence but something just tells me there's more to it. (And that same something says I have better things to do actually.)

John Cazale was the first person I thought of, only because of another trivia question I was asked (and had no clue to) just a few weeks ago--

essentially, every movie he was in (only five, I believe) was nominated for the best picture Oscar.
