Out Magazine Responds To Adam Lambert's Response!

Let's recap: Out magazine blew the whistle on Adam Lambert's handlers for various demands they made so that he wouldn't come across "too gay" in the magazine.

Lambert fired back with remarks on ew.com saying the mag had crossed the line.

And now, here's Out's response to the response:

"We've no desire to prolong this discussion, but whether or not we crossed a line in throwing light on the conversations that preceded Adam's cover shoot and interview, we're glad to see such a robust and spirited debate. We admire Adam's achievements, which is why we honored him as Breakout Star of the Year, but using the editor's letter to discuss the old school tactics in the way he ismarketed and promoted was important for an annual issue that celebrates gay progress--the Out 100.

"In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, Adam says, 'the letter that Aaron wrote is holding us back. Because it's recognizing the big difference as opposed to letting us all ignore preference and just be people.' We're glad he's sees sexuality that way. So do we--it's why we were so dismayed by his management whose actions reinforced those distinctions rather than erased them. This was never about turning Adam into a political figure, or about whether he should have been on the cover of Rolling Stone first (of course he should-what pop star wouldn't want that?).

"It was, however, about challenging the double standard applied to gay and mainstream media, or to use Adam's words, moving past those distinctions between gay and straight. As this controversy erupted a young gay man was murdered in Puerto Rico precisely by the kind of people who refuse to see past sexual preferences, and while we know that such hatred offends Adam as much as it does us, we hope his fans will consider the relationship between slurs such as 'too gay' and the second class status-yes, a form of apartheid-of gays in America. Adam is not required to address this cruel and lethal discrepancy--he does enough by being himself--but was it too much for us to expect his managers, with or without Adam's consent, to treat Out with the same respect they would treat mainstream media?"

No they didn't. They bashed him and he responded as he had every right to do. Now to get the last word, they come up with one more statement. They already made their points the first time. who is this helping?

SB says:

This is ridiculous. Out wins nothing, specifically Aaron the editior who bashed Adam to begin with. He should've just kept his mouth shut in the first place. Out made themselves look so bad after Adam gave them such an honest and open interview. Aaron went on the attack and attacked Adam, not his management. Adam is the most honest, open and sincere person that I have ever witnessed. His response back to Aaron and Out magazine was perfect.

Here's hoping for a HUGE career for Adam he so deserves it and I hope he never gives Out another interview after he was so obviously backstabbed by Out, specifically Aaron Hinkle.

Johnny says:

It's important to point out that Adam is claiming (in the new EW interview) he isn't anyone's puppet, it was all HIS idea for the Out interviewer to be told not to ask him about anything "too gay" like gay marriage. That twerp thinks it's too much to ask that he simply make a brief comment in support of gay marriage! And he expects everyone to be cool with that, he's post-gay, so post gay he doesn't give a shit if he or anyone else has equal rights in this country. He'll have a hissy fit if anyone asks him about it. Ridiculous! He's not "post-gay", he's just an asshole, and I can't wait to see him crash and burn now. His first two singles have not been successful. He'll probably be crawling back to the gay community after he finds out he's not going to be the next megastar after all.

I'm confused as to why anyone would think an editor can not use his editor's letter to talk about serious issues like this. Maybe if you read Vogue, you just want to hear Anna talk about her favorite designer, but Out has every right to raise questions around how celebrities are positioned and presented, especially when those celebrities are unequivocally gay.

"...was it too much for us to expect his managers, with or without Adam's consent, to treat Out with the same respect they would treat mainstream media?"
Maybe you don't know this, but all managers of celebrities attempt to control what is printed or said about their clients in all manners of media. OUT was not being singled out. Adam didn't want to get into the politics of gayness, and it is his right to make that statement through his management. He gave you a fantastic interview that in no way denied his sexuality. Get over yourselves.

skylar says:

If any of you felt disrespected it is because you took something personally that was not personal. My guess is that Adam's management of his image goes on anywhere he goes, all media venues. He is no dummy. You made a choice to think he only does this for your magazine. You pitted yourself as an opponent rather than someone on his side, supporting him. It almost looks like you were waiting to find something, a story outside the interview that you could exploit.

AnnieWt says:

Stop - enough you bastards! Adam is debuting his new CD on Monday and all you want to do his boost YOUR SALES - you're a fucking looser Hicklin, no one is buying your rag or buying the bullshit you're trying to sell. Adam Lambert is a multi-talented superstar and you're just an editor (and I use the term loosely) trying to sell a magazine at the expense of someone's career. Adam is so far out of your range so get over yourself. Talk about GAY BASHERS, you are the worse offender!!! Go away and shut the fuck up!

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 20 2009 @ 11:15AM
Ron says:

Hmmm, Skylar - I'm guessing you haven't edited magazines. It's unthinkable that a straight magazine would be asked not to make their artist "too straight." Yes, the massaging and marketing of celebs' images goes on all the time, but whether you think Out did the right thing or not, I think we can pretty much agree that it's much worse for gay media.

Aaron Hinklin made a HUGE mistake attacking Adam in an open letter in the same issue in which Adam gave them an excellent and very honest and open interview. Aaron was out of line and very unprofessional. He knows that all celebs have handlers - but the interview certainly didn't LOOK "handled!"

Now, after all the outrage, Aaron can't just let it drop - he has to keep getting the "last word" - one more time - one more dig. He is sounding a bit pathetic - and he just keeps on hurting the sales of his magazine further and further.

I think after this fiasco, which Aaron himself created, he's going to find that his "community" as a whole (not just celebs), are going to think twice before agreeing to be interviewed or featured by Out. Who knows who Aaron may attack next?

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 20 2009 @ 11:23AM
SB says:

I totally agree with you AnnieWt!!

It's embarrassing that a "gay" magazine would intentionally bash one of their own. Adam is out and proud and has been for almost ten years, he's never denied his homosexuality, never! He's totally proud of who he is and not ashamed, he's said this! You just want to try to get some sales for your crappy magazine and you're using Adam to do it.

And to Johnny up there, ,fuck you. You obviously don't know a thing about Adam Lambert if you think he never had any intention of letting people know he was gay. He's out and has been out, he just wants to be "Adam" an entertainer, he doesn't want to get involved in politics at this early stage in his career. You shouldn't comment when you're uninformed.

"was it too much for us to expect his managers, with or without Adam's consent, to treat Out with the same respect they would treat mainstream media?"

Was it too much for Adam to expect a publication that wants to be considered "mainstream" treat him and his management team with the same respect that "mainstream" publications do?

Who is asking for a double standard here?

TEB says:

Dudes you lost. You should really let it go. No-one agrees with you and by flogging this dead horse further you are just making yourselves more ridiculous.

Adam may or may not be the next big thing in music, but the truth is right now he is big news and you just tried to bitchslap him. His quote from the EW article was articulate, reasonable and true to who he is. Your response looks like you are trying to save face, and you are doing a pretty poor job of it.

I have no problem with you wanting a dialogue about the media manipulation of out gay people. In fact it sounds really interesting. But you tried to use Adam to start it without his consent, and you were bitchy in the process. You screwed up. Hicklin should be doing his resume, he has no credibility any more.

skylar says:

Ron,

My guess is they knew he was managing his image before he got them. Of course they knew. It was like the perfect trap. So, they are using him, the "pioneer", for political purposes even when he has asked all along not to be made a poster child. Instead of respecting that wish, they simply forced it on him. They made him the poster child anyway. That is just incredibly uncool.

SL says:

I believe it is difficult to pass judgment on 19E when we don't really know their intent behind any words that might have been (or might not have been) "too gay" or "gay gay" or if they just wanted to honor Lambert's desire to avoid politics at this time. On the other hand, Out's Editor crossed a line by addressing his statement to Adam and not taking this up with him personally or addressing management in the publication. If they had such a problem with his handlers, perhaps they should not have featured Lambert in their publication. It begs the question, who's the sellout here?

I look forward to Adam Lambert featuring boy on boy action in his visual presentations of his music, but understand if he wants to have the option to appeal to heterosexual fantasies as well. Plenty of straight people are allowed to play gay. Let's allow open gays to play straight too. If Sean Penn can do it, why can't Adam Lambert?

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 20 2009 @ 11:40AM
Jim says:

So, Out doesn't want to prolong this debate any longer, and then releases another statement that prolongs the debate. Makes sense

Then we learn that Adam was the one that said no politics in the interview. It was Adam's idea, not his management. Clearly, he is in control of his image. Then we have people hoping he crashes and burns because he won't say a word about gay marriage and then thinks Adam will come crawling back to the gay community when he does fail. Ridiculous. Adam doesn't have to take up any cause, and from what I've seen its the gay blogs that are ironically the ones saying to Adam, you are not gay enough, or you are too gay or too fem or he's acting too straight. Yet you think he'll want your support when you've never given it to him in the first place. Why not support him now for being brave enough to be open as he is instead of stomping your feet cause he won't stand up for YOUR cause. He has every right to say I don't want to discuss this or that. Every person that is interviewed in any magazine does this, but they are usually more classy then to air behind the scenes neogiations in public

Lambosessed says:

Rights are getting taken away while people like Hicklin, who are supposed to be advancing the cause, are too busy bitching and infighting.

Seriously, he should get a grip and look at the bigger picture. He's taken his eyes off the prize to dally in cheap publicity.

I would like to see Hicklin provide evidence backing up his claim regarding the discrepancy of respect levels shown to Out and mainstream media because my bullshit detector is off the scale.

Out, this latest BULL is really uncalled for. Adam has detailed why what was asked of OUT and as he is not a political figure he has a right to answer questions with which he is comfortable.

It is my hope that as Adam explodes on the Music scene that he never again honor's OUT with an Interview or cover.

You have proven to be petty and very immature in your attacks on Adam.

Adam is 100% correct it is your attitude of non acceptance that turns people off to your cause. Adam is who he is and he does not need to champion your agenda.

Just because he's gay? How about some of the straight celebs? How do they feel? Anybody ask them? Sorry, people, this guy Hicklin is angry because he couldn't manipulate ADAM into saying what HE wanted him to say and the DAME who did the interviewing could have asked any question she wanted ... ADAM didn't have to answer it but she just went running to the ed crying because they said she couldn't. PLEASE!! HICKLIN pick up your marbles and run home to momma ... GAME's OVER LOSER!!!

Tim says:

Why the fuck would Aaron Hicklin/Out make up this stuff about Adam/his management? They've effectively lost a contact that could help them in the future because of this -- I don't think they'd just decide to lie about something this big because it seemed like it'd be fun/provocative.

And -- I really take heart with what they're saying about the boy who was DECAPITATED in Puetro Rico because he's gay. It'd be lovely to be in a world where no one had to worry about the distinction between being gay and straight and we could all just be "people" instead of "gay people" or "straight people" but we DON'T LIVE IN THAT WORLD. And that's what Out is trying to make people realize.

Whether Adam likes it or not -- the very fact that he's out and about in the public eye gives him a platform and while he doesn't need to be overtly political -- he does need to know that what he says and what he does DOES have an effect on mainstream culture and changing the way that gays are accepted.

Cami says:

As an editor myself, I was shocked, appalled and disgusted by Hicklin's unprofessional, unethical, and frankly idiotic behavior. It is the NORM in our world for celebrities and their agents to try and control their image. If an editor/writer does not wish to abide by the terms the subject sets, it's quite simple: refuse the opportunity to do the interview. I've done that a few times, myself. Of course, had Out done so, they would have also given up the opportunity to sell more magazines, because -- let's be clear -- the POINT of having Adam Lambert on the cover is to SELL MAGAZINES. They chose to follow the money.

To agree to the terms in order to sell magazines, then turn around and write an editorial bitchslap to the person who actually the draw for selling YOUR magazine is unethical and unprofessional. It's also, to be blunt: STUPID on a business level. By bitchslapping a popular celebrity, the magazine alienates fans, i.e. customers who might have purchased the magazine, so the anticipated newstand sales will not materialize. Secondly, it also ensures that the celebrity will never again grace the magazine's cover. Thirdly, how many celebrities and/or their agents will refuse Out's requests in the future for fear of getting the same treatment? I know if I were a pr agent, Out would no longer be on my list of potential interviews.

The magazine is the loser, because its editor breached a media rule: Off the record stays there. And Hicklin most certainly understood the OTR nature, even if tacit, of Adam's publicist's request.

Johnny says:

Why the fuck would Aaron Hicklin/Out make up this stuff about Adam/his management?"

Of course they didn't make it up. Read Lambert's response in EW, he confirms all of it, and also takes responsibility for all of it. He says he isn't anyone's puppet, it was all his idea that the interviewer be told not to ask anything "too gay." People can continue to blame his handlers if they like, as long as you know Lambert is saying they are simply his employees following his wishes.

Adam's just the new Clay Aiken, and a rabid fanbase didn't save Aiken who doesn't even have a recording contract anymore.

The letter violated standard journalistic integrity the same way revealing sources would have done. It was also taking a pot-shot at someone they themselves acknowledge as a valuable pioneer. It was also just plain rude. All of which WOULD have been justified if they were blowing the whistle on something sufficiently appalling.

Instead, any outside observer can see that Lambert's marketing has overall been gutsy, even if not wholly fearless. Taking a quote and a standard publicist negotiation out of context to instead spin it into a sensationalized de-gaying story is a deliberate misrepresentation and diminishes every positive move Lambert actually has made, while undermining real and valid criticism of missteps.

Even IF you say his people set up some parameters, that is very common. By calling it out - whether it happened or not, only calls attention to the process of progress..it doesn't help progress. It's like internal fighting which only serves to make the cause seem weak and divided. The interview was very open and honest. Had the interview been stupid and canned responses from Adam I could see a gripe. But they weren't and you're trying to make something from nothing. ciciring says:

For "out", I have to point out:

1, Adam gave "Out" a sincere and honest interview while "Out" is the one who dishonestly held a backstabbing to Adam. I was wondering if "Out" told any celeb that they would accuse him/her in the letter from editor in chief, who will accept their invitation for an interview. They are low for doing this;

2, They deliberately kept misleading people.

At the very beginning, in the letter from Aaron, he deliberately ignored the fact that no AI contestant is allowed to be interviewed by any media during the competition because it would be unfair to others. And absolutely Aaron used this to show that they were not treated equally as the mainstream media. But is it? No. As a professional worked in media for years, Aaron has no reason to not knowing this, even if he "never watched AI" which he claimed.( hmm~)

And now here, they used this pity card again to mislead the readers that "Out" was not treated equally. See what they said: " was it too much for us to expect his managers, with or without Adam's consent, to treat Out with the same respect they would treat mainstream media?" Can I remind them that, Adam himself wants to be recognized as a singer who happened to be gay rather than a gay who happened to be a singer? And of course his management wants the public to pay more attention on his MUSIC rather than his sexuality, is there any problem with that? Or do they just insist that sexuality should come before music for a singer? So why did "Out" use this as a misleading reason to show the hint that they are not treated equally as the mainstream media? I am pretty sure as part of an artist's public appearance, his management would require the same as what they've required "Out", because it is music what they want people to focus on. It would be suprised to imagine a media professional like Aaron would not recognize that. Oh well, if he deliberately use this "unfair" to mislead people so that they can get more hit, I would just say "can you be even lower?"

And finally, segregation is not cool.

I've been an OUT subscriber for more years than I can remember. I considered cancelling my subscription last year when OUT magazine didn't have a single lesbian woman on the cover in an entire year. This latest tempest in a teapot, with editor Hicklin lobbing grenades at a fledgling pop singer, is the last straw. My adolescent nephew is a gay young man who has been elevated and inspired by Adam Lambert's example. Trust me, he's not alone in that. It sucks what OUT magazine is willing to do now in a desparate attempt to boost sales.

I cancelled my subscription today.

OUT magazine should have stopped negotiations with ADAM when they felt he was abandoning his principles. Instead, OUT abandons its own principles and puts him in the group photo. But then, all puffed up in renewed values and in an effort to have it both ways, the editor complains about ADAM! Why did OUT allow ADAM in the group photo? Money, baby, money. He sells magazines. I think you would call that a business decision. Maybe what ADAM and team are operating from are BUSINESS DECISIONS. They get to make them, too. MYOB--ADAM gets to think and say what he wants and hang with who he wants. He doesn't need a lecture from anyone and he doesn't have to fit anyone else's standards. This kind of judgmental attitude is just as wrong from the progressive side as it is from the far right. The letter from the editor was VERY unprofessional and wrong-headed. The man sounded like a wounded puppy. Boo hoo hoo.

Sorry Skylar1 my name is truly Skylar is yours?

Mickey Mouse of course gay's are mistreated and do not have the rights they deserve. If they did we have equal rights we would not be having this discussion.

But Adam has also been mistreated by One. Yes he is a gay man. He gave an exceptional interview to One. As I see it, he only needs to be true to himself as a gay performer. He has been and I am sure he will remain so. One individual can not cure the ills of the universe and the gay community. To place so much need and pressure on one individual is unfair.

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 20 2009 @ 2:11PM
Kathy says:

Skylar2 - Adam only has to be "true to himself as a GAY performer?" He's a performer -- a brilliant one -- and not a "GAY PERFORMER."

The gay community is putting him in a box more than anyone else.

Do I have this right? Out Magazine went a whole year without putting a womon on its cover while women around the world were being subjected to genital mutilations, not allowed to attend school and being stoned to death for having been raped? Then, when Out Magazine's WOMAN reporter gets the best interview Adam Lambert has given since his career began, her MALE editor publicly trashes the interview and its subject? To cap it all of, Aaron Hicklin put Shana in the untenable position of having to defend his disgusting conduct at the expense of her own career? Something is really wrong here and Out Magazine needs to be called on it.

Here's the deal:

Adam is a nice guy; he's under a tremendous amount of pressure and he's doing the best he can. I respect him even if I don't always agree with him. He's also the most talented singer and performer I have witnessed in ages, and he deserves to be a megastar regardless of whether he chooses to take on any political stances.

But many of his straight fans refuse to see anything in terms other than how it affects Adam. Please, for cripes sake, stop with the lectures addressed to "you gays" about the behavior/thoughts/feelings of the "gay community." It's ignorant at best, and condescending at worst.

Go ask Neil Patrick Harris how to be out with dignity. I can believe he refuse to be on the cover until they got a straight person!. That you feel the need even as an out gayman to distance yourself from us like is going to ruin you career and then get all indignant because we don't like you is having so big one. .... Remember Adam in the world of dance music if gayman don't like your music no one likes your music!

Well I said it right from the start, if you are an Adam fan and you want to help him, ignore, ignore, ignore. This IS what happened to Clay Aiken..so much controversy drove people away. And like Adam he was everywhere in 2003/2004. I kind of understand now why he refused to discuss his sexuality ...look how much hot water Adam is in being totally out. Seems you can't win either way. It really shouldn't matter at the end of the day. If you like an entertainer and they serve you well then just enjoy them and stay away from this kind of discussion. And yes..Mr Aiken is currently recording his 6th album and plans a tour in the spring/summer. Good luck to them both..I am always interested their careers. They are very different but both interesting to watch.

Lambert doesn't have to carry the mantle of gay America on his shoulders just because Hicklin wants him to. That's not his job. His job is to sing.

If Hicklin didn't like the conditions he should have opted to not have Lambert in the magazine. Thing is, he wanted that interview so he then chose to backstab and that crossed the line. He ambushed Lambert and didn't give him a chance to respond and now that Lambert has responded Hicklin and Out look pretty foolish. The thing that's lost in all this is the interview itself which was extremely open and candid. Out really shot itself in the foot.

The old guard gay folks needs to quit cannablizing their youth. It is their own bigotry that is fucking it up now. They are making asses of themselves and threatening to take the gay audience away from Adam because he won't play it their way. Adam is a great role model as an artiest who is gay and proud and comfortable with his sexuality - what more does he have to do?? Sure Ellen and some of the others have made strong political statements, but not on the eve of their careers beginning and they didn't hope out of the closet on day one - whereas Adam was never in. Hicklin is a jerk. The interview in OUT was open, honest and very insightful. Go Adam!! And I love the new album - STUNNING!!!

I find this whole situtation sad and extreme by the pulisher and interviewer of this article .. PLEASE!....

I was excited to see Adam on the cover of this magazine... You see.. 15 years ago I lost my brother to AIDS... same age as young Adam .. so young he was.. So sadly ashamed of his destiny and choice of living as a gay man!!..

SO excuse me for disagreeing with the publiher of this magazine... For me... Adam has brought a smile to my face, my mom and all my sisters!!.. We appreciate who is is and what he chooses to stand for.. . He is an entertainer, he is gay and he is proud of who he is!..

No one is saying there isn't work to do, but what I am saying is that YOU are the ones infringing on Adam's rights as a gay man to manage his own career and YOU are the ones being bigots against one of your own and saying he isn't acting "gay enough" in your view because he didn't make a political statement. Adam is and always has been Out and very comfortable with himself. Adam is making a positive statement about being a gay man. YOU are making a jerk of yourself by critizing and bashing this very talented gay man. YOU/OUT are giving the gay community a bad name.

You can't even SEE a FAR FAR FAR better talent even when it's right in front of ur faces. "Claymates" had to TRY to keep Aiken in the spotlight. We're not going to have to do that. Adam will do it himself because he's ThAT good. Aiken has a voice to him, yes..but NOT a voice ANYWHERE NEAR Adam's..and that's all Aiken has. Adam has EVERYTHING. DanteL says:

I find this whole thing beyond hilarious. When I showed this letter to my boyfriend, his response was "now can we cancel our subscription?" I remember NPH got the same response from the community when he said "I'm not an activist, I'm the court jester." And now all of the sudden he knows how to be out with dignity? Oh how they soon forget when there's fresh new meat to bash!

I'm not understanding the idea that somehow 19 is holding him back from embracing the gay, whatever the hell that means. This rant from Hicklin only served to make him look stupid because he obviously knows nothing about what Adam's been doing. Did he see Adam's outfit for Ring of Fire on Idol? Did he see the Idol finale where Adam glued rhinestones to his eyes and wore glittery platform boots? Did he see what Adam was wearing on the Idol tour? Did he buy a ticket and go to support this gay man? Did he see the photos for Rolling Stone? Did he see where Adam stated that he liked "things dangling in front of his face?" Did he see Adam's album cover? Did he see the pictures that were taken for the CD booklet? Did he see the photo in the back of the current issue of In-Style? Did he see what Adam wears on a daily basis? If this is 19 holding back the gay they might want to rethink their homophobia because they're not doing a good job.

For your information, Adam Lambert DID talk about gay marriage in the Rolling Stone issue where he said he supported it: "I'm not asking to get married in your church but you don't have the right to tell me I can't." He's also stated in several interviews that he supports gay rights. He's also talked extensively about being in the closet as a kid, finding himself in Germany, and really embracing his sexuality as an adult. So instead of trying to come up with fresh new ideas and questions to ask him, OUT wanted to rehash the same tired shit that he's already talked about a hundred times. I don't blame him for saying "enough already!" How about trying to do an interview with him as a man instead of trying to define him by his sexuality? I find it so ironic that this community wants to "look beyond the gay" but yet that's all they really want to talk about. No wonder the BF and I checked out some time ago.

I also find it beyond hypocritical that this magazine would go after Adam when it wallows in its own hypocrisy. It rarely features women on the cover (or lesbians), continually promotes those who are known to be gay but "don't talk about it" (Myka, Anderson Cooper, Jodi Foster--AC and JF have been on the OUT 100 list, which is kind of strange given that it's supposed to be about people who are out). They get a free pass but an openly, proud gay man is suddenly expected to have a flag planted in his ass 24/7? OUT is the definition of hypocrisy. I think Mr. Hicklin needs to look at his own website and other queer sites to see the various comments from people who've done nothing but continually trash Adam since Idol. He's too fat, too pimply, too gay, too campy, too flamboyant, too drag queen, too this that and everything else. Me thinks there needs to be a general house cleanup before going into someone else's and ordering folks around.

message to adam lambert and his fans - we are sick of him, sick of all this manufactured drama, sick of hearing lambert's name. we don't like his music, what he represents, and how it has been presented. if he was as talented as he and his record label wants us to believe, there would be no need for all of this overkill. i wish him no harm, but i could care less whether he succeeds or fails. i think most people outside of this internet bubble feel the same way - we just don't give a damn.

If you're so sick of his name, why are you reading about him (and making a useless comment)? ...and call me crazy, but ADAM is somehow responsible for this "overkill"?? I don't speak for others, but for ME--I do give a damn. I give a damn about the unconscienable, unprofessional behavior of this magazine editor. He begins this post with "we're glad to see such a robust and spirited debate." Right, Aaron, this division and vitriol is such a good way to further your cause. OOPS! sorry wtf, my comment was directed at the post above yours. After reading what they said about Adam all I could think about was wtf. Adam is getting media coverage because he has so many fans. We love him, and want to see him perform. I saw him in concert and I had so much fun. He is an unforgettable performer. He has the ability to completely capture the audience. I feel this way about Lady Gaga also. My family and I are going to see her in concert in January. We are very excited. There are other performers I'm not so crazy about, so I don't spend my time on them. So to make a long story short, if your sick of Adam Lambert go piss and whine somewhere else.

mick says:

"BE THE CHANGE THAT YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD." Adam is the best example of living up to that quote by Gandhi. He does more for gay rights every day by being himself, out and proud, comfortable in his own skin, able to relate to every type of person across gender, ethnicity, age groups, political boundaries. He has opened more minds this year with his interviews and performances than other gay activists could do by being political. There are conservative people who would condemn gays, yet have now gotten to "know" Adam Lambert through his amazingly intelligent and gracious interviews over the last few months. There are a lot of people who are political and end up polarizing more than unifying. Adam is an open book, giving us all a view into the normalcy of being gay, and letting people see that a good person is a good person. And, did anyone READ THE INTERVIEW? Adam was open, honest and didn't hold anything back. Still think OUT magazine is out of line.

I have to take issue with someones statement above that they "roll" their eyes when a Clay Aiken fan makes a comment. Excuse me but I happen to like Clay and Adam. I find it insulting that we, who like both, aren't allowed an opinion. My only concern for Adam is that his fans may be falling into the same trap that Clay did with his fans. You don't need to defend him. He will be just fine. Clay's fans drove people crazy by jumping on every negative article and bashing everyone else. I think that is sound advice. These are two grown men with talent..they don't need defending, just enjoy the show they put on and let it go. Don't assume that everyone who happens to like them both are out to insult Adam. They just may be looking out for his best interest as well as yours...chill a little!

This comments are too long considering nobody knows details and are working off the overview.

1. The publicist is gay. Hincklin snuck that out on twitter the next day.

Dog whistle is easy to understand for gay people. Plausible context which Hicklin refuses to give:

ie "We aren't going for The Village People, here so not too gay-gay, ok?"

That is totally understandable and could have been rejected if Out didnt like it.

2. Lambert has interviewed his position of supporting gay marriage and expounded on it in Rolling Stone. He says politics are not his expertise. We know this to be true since he brother tried to infiltrate a teabag party and blog it and it was FUBAR.

3, Hincklin sent the interviewer to scary homophobic RCA (eyeroll) alone. Then threw a hissy fit and wrote a letter and has continued tweeting, blogging and going on freaking Air America for four days now. wtaf?

4. Meanwhile, the biggest night of Lambert's life is tomorrow.

Hicklin is a horrible person taking out his anger at the interviewer's faux faux pas on Lambert.

Hicklin when are you going to OUT the gay publicist you brave backstabber who believes that all gay people owe it to you to ride around on a unicorn with a rainbow flag hanging out their a$$ 24/7 catering to your whims? PHONEY with faux outrage.

K says:

I have avoided comment on Adam Lambert for days. But this whole Out Mag thing is a "tempest in a teapot." LGBT Americans face real serious issues -- unfair treatment, discrimination and, where I live in the deep South, fear of violence. Adam is already fighting a tough battle -- to be an openly gay pop star -- the first in America -- and he has a shot of actually making it. In my opinion, OUT Magazine should be celebrating Adam's openness and supporting him. Adam doesn't need to get involved with political issues at this point in his career -- or ever if he chooses not to. Out Magazine, on the other hand, should be more interested in the fact that many gay Americans still cannot not live open lives without fear -- and a little less concerned about the political views of a nascent pop start who just wants to sing.

So Aaron, may I recommend that you visit rural Mississippi and worry about what is happening here.

Well done Aaron and Michael -- while the two of you ignore the real issues and focus on the trivial another subscriber just decided to cancel their subscription to Out. And, to the poster who are disparaging Adam, congratulations to you too -- you have now pushed me to listen to some Adam Lambert music so I can see what you hate so much -- you may have just given Adam another fan.
