Ever hear an old song and get instantly transported to a particular place in the cobwebs of your mind, whether it be your first bar or the
restaurant your boyfriend dumped you at between courses?

Lord knows any oldie at all plucks MY personal strings and immediately conjures up a place and time, since I've been through so darned many of them through the years.

Blondie's "Heart of Glass" calls back the Mudd Club, the ultra cool new-wave hangout where everyone's shit didn't stink.

Madonna's "Hung Up" revivifies some madcap groping in the corners of Happy Valley, the East Side dance club where anything went.

And Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" was in the background when I got two teeth pulled last year, so I always scream and clutch someone, eyes a-popping, when I hear it.

And you? Name the soundtrack to your memory bank.

My boyfriend dumped me in a sushi restaurant as a karaoke version of "Rhythm of the Night" by Debarge was playing.

I used to get anguished whenever I heard it, but now it makes me strangely happy.

June 1984, visiting New York from North of the Border, and discovering Battiato, (Italian singer-songwriter, film maker, painter) at Rizzoli Bookstore. Bought two of his LP record albums.

What a great trip down memory lane to see/hear updated versions of his songs from his 1997 'L'Imboscata Tour' now on 'youtube', arranged and sounding better than ever.

Mark says:

The Duke of Earl (Gene Chandler) transports me back to 1962 and my sister Jacky's modern little radio from Korvettes on her nightstand.

Johnny Angel (Shelly Fabares) 1962 makes me think of how much she resembled my sisters at that time and how I still see them now many years later

Time in a Bottle takes me back to 1974 and my horrible senior prom (that song was the theme): The waitresses at the catering hall couldn't have given a shit, some with their hair in curlers; my date had her period; the food was lousy; and our table was right in front of the very loud amps.

I Feel Love (Donna Summer) takes me right back to 1979, Man's Country Baths on 15th Street, 2:30 in the morning, top floor hallway paneled with pecky cypress, fantasy rooms on each side, me clad in only a towel peering out the small window at the end of the hall at the foggy night.

To Mark: Tell us more about the baths!!

(And I have a horrible senior prom too. I think my date was on her period...or possibly two at the same time!)

Mark,
LOVE the Korvettes reference! I grew up near a S. Klein's that became EJ Korvettes on Long Island.
Do You Wanna Funk by Sylvester brings me back to the St. Mark's Baths - oh boy was that place unbelievable. Poppers up my nose and boys up...well, everywhere else.

unlike edelweiss with olympia or victor/victoria on the rag, it would be sweetie's "sister morphine" at boy bar. always. tgif sliders when gay men used to be pigs in a blanket -- now, all they care about are chicken wings and burritos. i've never seen a drag queen do a donkey show nor had i ever considered downtown culture flaccid. i've come to reconsider the latter.

Vodka Stinger says:

A New Argentina from the original Broadway Cast of EVITA will always remind me of the the great east coast blackout. It was the only CD i had with me that day (Yes back then the mp3 had yet to take over)so i listened to it over and over during my 3 and a half hour walk home from work.
