Vigil for Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado on Sunday

An email has gone out asking people to bring candles and some soul to a rally this Sunday for the gay guy murered in Puerto Rico, whom I wrote about here the other day.

Here's the message:

"19-year-old aspiring fashion artist Jorge Steven López Mercado was found on Friday night decapitated, dismembered, and partially burned. According to authorities, the investigation has shown that it is indeed a hate crime.

"The police investigator suggested that he deserved what he got because of the 'type of lifestyle' he was leading'.

"Please, please invite all of your friends to a vigil honoring Mercado, specifically, and all others who have been murdered, beaten, and otherwise terrorized for their sexuality or semblance thereof.

"The queer community in Puerto Rico needs to know we support them.

WE MUST FUNNEL OUR SADNESS INTO AN OUTPOURING OF RIGHTEOUS OUTRAGE."

The vigil is Sunday November 22 from 7 to 9 PM at the Christopher Street piers (Tentative; If I hear that the location either changes or is confirmed, I will update it in comments here.)

I don't understand what you're getting at. I started this movement on my own, and it has grown into something amazing. My response would have been exactly, exactly the same if this happened anywhere else in the world.

Tim Dunn says:

Horrifying!!!

Perhaps the police investigator had some connection as he was quoted as suggesting, "that he deserved what he got because of the 'type of lifestyle' he was leading'.

Just sick.

My heart & prayers go out to him and his family. We're also holding a vigil on the 22nd here in West Hollywood.

Derek says:

If this HAD happened in Jamaica, the persons responsible would have the support of the government, since the Jamaican government not only allows but supports the murder of homosexuals.

This is ridiculous!!! People should be able live their lives however they want without being afraid of some ignorant asshole harming let alone killing them for whatever reasons. This is just like the Teena Brandon case in 1999 where the detectives paid no mind to her because she was transgender and she ended up dead days later. Or what about Eddie "Gwen" Araujo who was also brutally beaten to death and lawyers suggested she caused her death by living the life she lived and to this very day neither of her assailants were charged with a hate crime...something has to be done

We are also hosting a vigil in Oakland, CA on Sunday at sunset. We are drawing connection between sexualized violence, colonization, and militarization, the crossing of borders, and the policing of genders. We will be gathering after wards for a healing space with friends. Much love and respect from the Bay Area.

Silverhand13 says:

These people should be nailed to the heavens for this. I mean, there's a difference between kicking someone's ass or being an asshole to them.. but going to this extreme shows that someone is not only mentally disturbed against gay people, but against humanity. Someone cannot do something like this without really being damaged in deep places that likely will never heal. I pity them, because they have already given up any ounce or prayer of being a real human again after this. Their nights will always be haunted by his face, his screams, and the parts left behind from the mutilation and partial burning. There are few things that are truely monsterous in our current day and age, but this is certainly one of them.

Joanne Bermudez says:

But the bigger travesty will be if this murder is not treated as the hate crime that it is and tried under the new Matthew Shepard Hate Crime Act. If this gets swept under the rug as just a crime I challenge the entire LGBT community to make their voices heard!!!
I just posted the news story on CNN iReport since they neglected to cover it at all.

I am musican living in Queens ny and as soon as I read the unfortunate new I was outranged!!!. Now more than ever is a time to not only reflect on all the work we have a head of us but also to unite and demand our rights as human beings. All of us are constantly harrased, rediculed in our jobs, communities and to some extent and as a victim myself we all have to stand up to the plate and do our part as individuals and as a hole. There is not one day that I'am fighting for my rights and with the rights of many others in mind. One by one we will not only achieve our rights but we will also insure that our rights are protected!!!!!

This should be handled under the Mathew Shepherd Act. Puerto Rico is a unincorporated territory of the United States! The ACLU is trying to get this "uped" to a hate crime, but the US gov won't do it.

I am very happy that organized this! Yet at the same time appalled that you are using the terms the queer community or "for the gay guy murdered" do you not have respect for people and for the community in which we have?
