Which Shows Would You Like Revived?

This brain emission just came in from a reader, so I take it very seriously:

"Bye Bye Birdie recently returned to Broadway in its first revival in 50 years and South Pacific took 60 years to return, but other shows return in unnecessary revivals like clockwork (Grease, Gypsy).

"What plays or musicals are long overdue for revival? I can think of a few--Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is my #1, Marat/Sade is #2, and Tiny Alice and Take Me Along are right up there.

Sincerely,

Jan Kubicki"

Well, dear Jan, my number one choice is actually coming to Broadway--it's Promises, Promises, which I've never seen! It's basically The Apartment meets Burt Bacharach, and as such, it's always sounded like the kind of zingy, kitschy show I'd simply adore--even the "Turkey Lurkey Time" number.

I'd also welcome retreads of wildly obscure yet appealing titles like Henry Sweet Henry, Anyone Can Whistle, and Seesaw, even if producers wouldn't.

Oh, and an occasional new show would work for me too.

How about you freaks? What overlooked gem would you fork out a hundred for?

Roman Polanski playing the cockroach in Kafka's The Metaphorphosis onstage -- Roman really did that in Paris years ago, and it's high time he put together a prison production of it!

Just once, I wish someone would drag out the old sets and costumes from the original 1971 production of "FOLLIES," cast it with real musical theatre legends (not au currant actors who can't sing nor dance), and throw away James Goldman's awful book (it has never never never worked), and center it around Sondheim's best score (the pastiche numbers are true classics)

Yes, I know the concept is similar to the Lincoln Center production in 1985, but... c'mon... there were some serious miscastings in that performance. And that book (script for your lay-people) still stunk!

C'mon, if they can cough up $50 million (!) for "Spiderman on Broadway," then they can certainly cough up some dough for "Follies."

Southern Dave says:

How about reviving some Cole Porter classics, such as "Panama Hattie" or "DuBarry Was a Lady," with belters like LuPone, Klea Blackhurst and yes, Sharon McKnight.

In "Du Barry," Nathan Lane would be great fun in the Bert Lahr role and Kristin Chenoweth would make a delectable Betty Grable."DuBarry" also has a role for a young Betty Hutton, too.

The moppet in "Panama Hattie" ("What Say, Let's Be Buddies"?)could be a discarded "Billy Elliott" kid in drag and the sailors could be an assortment of eye candy -- take yer pick.

Dream away, little man!

@JonnyOneNote:

I heartily agree. No show deserves a full revival more than Follies.

But today it's not about being worthy of revival it's all about the show's potential to recoup the producers' investment. And as much as I love Follies, I wonder if there is enough of an audience out there to keep this great show running long enough to do so.

But Mr. Musto asked what should be revived, not what was financially feasible to be revived. And Follies is at the top of my list.

Pete says:

That old late night show that used to be on USA channel in the 1980s called 'NightFlight'. It was basically a smorgasborg of cool shit that ran from about 11 p.m. until about 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Among other things it would show crazy but well done music videos, documentaries about all sorts of artists, intellectuals, short films, avante gard films, independent films and sometimes raunchy B movies. The show was one of the best things ever on TV b/c you never knew what to expect from hour to hour. 'NightFlight' desperately needs to come back in some form. It was perfect for those weekend nights when you didn't feel like going out partying.

Gay Movie Fan says:

There was NOTHING wrong with the ORIGINAL book of FOLLIES. Mr. Goldman, for some reason, felt the need to revise it for the revival and in so doing absolutley ruined it, by making several deletions in the dialogue and moving some parts around.

I own a copy of the original book (as published by Random House - I think I paid $2.95 for the hardcover!) and a copy of the revised book, as republished in 2001. The late version sucks. I also have a bootleg live recording of the complete show (on 2 CD's) with the original cast. The original book / cast was pure magic. It worked fine for me, and a lot of other theatre-lovers I know.

I saw the original FOLLIES four times back in 1970-1971, and it had the most heartfelt and tearful closing night I can ever remember attending.

If they would do it RIGHT with the ORIGINAL book, I think people would be ready for it. Few critics "got it" in 1970, as was the case with many Sondheim musicals.

Follies was my favorite musical of the hundreds I've seen since 1969, when I saw my first show, HAIR (well, I was only 16 then - cut me a break).

CMG says:

Titanic- Ideally a 2012 revival in remembrance of the centennial. The show was beautiful but underappreciated. Did it even re-coup?

I wish Chicago would just die so we can bring back the original and the cheap black, bare stage revival.

Cabaret- Just to see yet another Nazi-fied version of the ending.

Porgy and Bess- The black ensemble pieces are few and far between.

I wish Jerry Herman's other shows like Mame and Hello, Dolly! would get revived. I adore La Cage but am so tired that being done over and over rather than those other brilliant shows get a new scope.

BALLROOM, Michael Bennett's 1979 musical starring the late and illustrious Dorothy Loudon, which I saw and thought was just great, but not for 1979. Would love to see how it holds up.

Gay Movie Fan, wow! A bootleg original FOLLIES! You're so lucky. Yeah, that's probably #1 for me, too. I love, love, love FOLLIES, but I do think it should get tweaked. I have my own brilliant ideas, of course....

How about CELEBRATION anyone???

Still waiting for DANCIN', since roundabout canceled its revival a few seasons back.

Yes, Ballroom - although it's got the same problem as Mack and Mabel: it's a huge downer. But we're not worrying about the commercial ramifications, right?

JonnyOneNote says:

GayMovieFan, if you have a bootleg copy of the complete original cast, you owe it to the world to release it! Anything to undo the damage of that horrible buchered Capitol Records release!

I saw the show when it moved to the Schubert in L.A., original cast intact. The script struck me then as ... well, it just didn't flow. When I read the Random House version, the same feeling came back, and when I bought the Theatre Arts version in 2000, the writing still bothered me. It wasn't the scores; it was the way the dialogue segued into it and vice-versa. It was just clunky. I can't think of any other word to describe it.... like a dead weight would fall on the stage right after a show-stopping number like "Mirror, Mirror."

Ah well, memories can be playing tricks on me, but I would love to hear the unedited versions of the songs, whether it be 2 CDs or 4 LPs.
