Buju Banton

Boo to Homophobic Buju Banton!

Would a musical artist who sings "Jews must die" or "black people need to be killed" get a Grammy nomination? I really don't think so, and if I am somehow off-base in assuming that, please look through this year's list of nominees--Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and so on--and let me know.

But I do know one thing for sure. If you advocate death to gays, the Grammys will still think you're worthy of honor, as long as they sort of dig your music.

And so, Buju Banton got one for Best Reggae Album as jaws dropped in sensible homes everywhere.

As the watchdog group GLAAD notes:

"In a popular song released in 1988 entitled 'Boom Bye Bye,' Banton repeats the anti-gay 'f-word' and says that 'f-----s have to die' and he will 'shoot them in the head' or 'burn them.' The Associated Press has reported that the song 'Batty Rider' from Banton's 1993 record 'Mr. Mention' glorifies the shooting of gay men."

And so, GLAAD has called on folks to contact the Recording Academy and sign an online petition protesting the nomination.

Check it out and start signing for your rights.

boycott Gargamel, Island, Penthouse Records, and other Banton labels says:

why just sign a GLAAD petition no one cares about? Write directly to all the murderer's labels, like Gargamel, Island, Penthouse Records, and other Banton labels -- write to amazon.com, barnes & noble.com etc and demand the murderer's CDs stop being listed -- as Miss Musto knows, the Grammys are really the Scammys where money reigns -- once the murderer stops selling, they will bury him where he belongs -- under a pile of cow shit.

So do we forgive him for not performing the song? Has he issued an apology as well?

Jonster says:

"Banton was charged in connection with a 2004 incident in which he, as part of a group of about a dozen people, allegedly beat six men believed to be homosexuals, after forcing entry into a house in Kingston, near Banton's recording studio. One of the victims lost use of an eye in the attack. Charges against Banton were dismissed by the judge in the case in January 2006, for lack of evidence.[7][8]

In 2007 Banton was allegedly among a number of reggae artists who signed a pledge, the Reggae Compassionate Act, to refrain from performing homophobic songs or making homophobic statements,[9] but he later denied that he had made any such commitment."

From Banton's Wikipedia page.

Why do blacks get a free pass on homophobic speech and hate crimes? Black homophobia needs to be addressed rather than turning a blind eye towards this mainstream phenomenon.

I am sooooo tired of the new "everything black" angle that is pushed on us. This tired musician probably smells like a goat and has gnats swirling around his head (both of them).

The Grammy Award are the least interesting event in media anyway. Seems like it would be best suited for the Black Entertainment Network.

Gays have always risen to the top of their fields and it is unfortunate that they get bashed time and again. If Banton wants to curse gays to make himself feel big, so what, he'll get televised anyway and blacks can have another hate monger to call a hero. What a sad community they have become, when so many black people gave so much to make it this far and idiots like Banton crap all over their heritage.

Funny how such idiotic artists wind up with sub-par material anyway. Gave a listen to this song when it 1st came out, tried to sit thru it a 2nd time just now, and Banton's lucky he may never meet me or I'd hand him an invoice for wasting over 6 minutes of my life.

I can't get over this sentiment that this despicable foreigner is being used to typify the "Black Community".

The American black community is not totally homophobic. I agree there is a large percentage of Christian Baptist Lunatics that make up the population. However, Banton's hate speech is not endemic to the black community no more than Enimen's hate speech is endemic of the white community.

I'm not excusing what he did or said, quite frankly he'll reap what he has sown, but this is a foreigner with a grotesque message. There's no reason to typify the black community, if even such a thing exists, because of this trashy, worthless person. F*ck Buju Banton and his equally pathetic hate spewing brethren (Beenie Man et al) His music lacks sophistication, meaning, talent and skill. He's a disgusting human being that doesn't deserve the ire of respectable people.

Heated stuff here,

has anyone cared enough to read into the material? Does anyone know Buju was about 15 when he recorded Boom Bye Bye? Do you know that homosexuality is prohibited on the Island of his birth? Do you know that on Jamaica children are raised with the idea that gay people are the devil incarnate? Do you know that not too long ago the Jamaican church and government came out in defense of homophobic artists? Do you realise that an exuse for the song will make him an outcast and possibly outlaw in his native country? I too strongly condemn the whole of Jamaican society for this homophobic stance but I deem it wrong to relentlesly persecute Buju for being Jamaican....

K. says:

A cultural revolution is strongly needed in Jamaica. it has a long tradition of cultural development that embraces all peoples. Do you know, of all the Caribbean islands, Jamaica is the most culturally diverse? Their national motto is "out of many, one people."
Jamaica is an island that once respected the variety of people and embraced it. However due to evil religious zealots proselytizing to vulnerable peoples, the island has been swamped with evil Christian fanaticism. They've perverted the once proud and beautiful people... making them into something they're not.
Jamaica as a society is in need of strong change. The removal of nasty politicians and infectious religion is strongly needed.

HarveyLivesSF says:

Dan:

1. Buju has performed the song as recently as 2006.

2. It's message of genocide against gays has been heard millions of times since this song was put out--the most famous call for death to the gays and lesbians ever.

3. buju of course has not apologized for this song--link if you think he has? (don't think of linking to an oscure book from 15 years ago that does not have a source for its claim)

4. When asked most recently about this he said, "the fight goes on...the war will never end between me and fagg*t"

5. buju's managment has been masterful at playing the press...using his anti-gay schtick to get press and sales. He has been successful at this, hence the grammy nod, so the gay community must wake up and fight back to this scourge.

6. just to be clear: buju is sucking the d*** of colonialism, ignorantly parroting the words of Jamaica's former british rulers, and current American christianist influences (e.g. Rick Warren)

7. There is a VERY IMPORTANT battle being fought here...can violently homophobic artists like buju or beenie man be accepted in good graces by civilized nations that respect human rights and by international corporations such as AEG. (yes, I am calling jamaica uncivilized, entirely on the basis of their persecution of gay/lesbian/trans people)

8. We're not persecuting Jamaica. We're persecuting buju for the harm and pain that he has inflicted, and we will continue to do so until he renounces violence against gay people clearly and forcefully and denounces and apologizes for that song. That might make him unpopular in Jamaica? Well how rich does that man need to be--he is a wealthy and powerful international superstar.

JR says:

"Would a musical artist who sings "Jews must die" or "black people need to be killed" get a Grammy nomination?" Buju Banton doesn't "sing" those songs anymore... he SANG them. He signed a treaty years ago agreeing not to perform those songs because they offended gays.

"In a popular song released in 1988 entitled 'Boom Bye Bye,'..." 1988? 1988??? Gay people are still crucifying Buju for a song he wrote as a teen over 20 years ago? What about his songs that condemn the corruption and violence in his country, like "Murderer," "Destiny," "Forgiveness" and countless other uplifting songs I grew up listening to. The Village Voice is a publication where I expect to see the whole picture, not a biased, emotional rant that's just as hateful as it accuses Buju's music of being.

Gay culture holds the belief that Jamaican culture is hateful... but guess what, Jamaican culture holds the belief that gay culture is evil. So the two should agree to disagree, except that gays in North America have political power, which is something Jamaica definitely DOESN'T have, after the U.S., the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have stripped them of every ounce.

Why do gays try mixing race and sexual orientation. There's just no comparison. Colour cannot be compared to a man who doesn't want a woman and vice versa. Every race has bad apples of this type. Id consider a gay person to have a medical issue.....

"Batty Rider" is a term used to describe tight shorts that women wear; some Americans call them Daisy Dukes. That being said, read these lyrics: http://www.actionext.com/names_b/buju_banton_lyrics/batty_rider.html and do tell us where Batty Rider has anything to do with gays.

We'll wait.

As usual, the anti-Buju crowd doesn't have an inkling of a clue to what they're protesting. If you want to continually hound a 36-year-old for songs they wrote when they were 15, and can't find a single solitary song in the past TWENTY YEARS to support your position, the only person that ends up looking like an idiot is you.

To say Jamaica is uncivilized purely based on their treatment of gays and lesbians, then you might as well say the United States is uncivilized for the treatment of it's minorities.
Jamaica is a poor country, but rich culturally. To call it uncivilized is hatred and racist. I believe that sentiment is coming from a dark place indeed. shameful.

But now I hear the idiot has been arrested for cocaine possession. That carries a sentence of 20 years... I said he would reap what he's sown.

AllTruth1 says:

THE GAY COMMUNITY CONTINUING A HISTORICAL PRACTICE IN AMERICA OF USING MOBS TO HARM PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY BLACK PEOPLE:

In reading the letter submitted to the The Recording Academy which awards the Grammy and seeing that GLAAD and all signatories lied about the number of songs with anti-gay content which Buju Banton wrote and performed, it was clear to me that the Gay Community used a mob of liars who used misinformation a.k.a. propaganda, in order to force others to support the Gay Community.

“BATTY RIDER” IS NOT ABOUT ANYTHING DEALING WITH THE GAY COMMUNITY. The song Batty Rider is about the extremely short and skin-tight shorts that some women wear to the dancehall in Jamaica.

So, when Buju Banton said in “Batty Rider” that [they must want the DJ to commit murder], it’s just a man saying that he was so sexually aroused by those sexy females wearing the batty rider that they must want him to murder himself because he was so aroused seeing them in their sexy shorts. His lyrical proclamation is equivalent to an American saying, “You’re killing me, baby with your sexy-self.”

Furthermore, to date, in 2010, Buju Banton has written only one song with anti-gay content and that’s “Boom Bye Bye” which he wrote at 15 years old as an emotional reaction to an adult man raping a boy in Jamaica.

Finally, the actions of GLAAD and all signatories made it clear that America has been a society which has used mobs to harm others, as was done in America during the slavery period and Jim Crow laws period when mobs rallied to lynch blacks and now it was done when the Gay Community mob released its letter to The Recording Academy against Buju Banton.

FOR ALL THE REASONS WHICH I DISCUSSED IN MY ABOVE COMMENT, I WILL CONTINUE TO SPEAK OUT FOR “MY BROTHER,” BUJU BANTON ONLINE, IN PRINT, IN THE STREETS AND EVERYWHERE.

Posted On: Thursday, Feb. 18 2010 @ 12:39PM
AllTruth1 says:

HERE IS MORE INFORMATION FOR ALL INSTEAD OF THE MISINFORMATION ABOUT BUJU BANTON:
The song "Batty Rider" was on the MR MENTION album (1993).

The song "Boom Bye Bye" can be found on the BUJU BANTON The Early Years (90-95) album.

It would have been the responsible thing to do, if the members of GLAAD and all signatories to the letter presented to The Recording Academy would have actually listened to Buju's music before they made false statements against it, in order to dissuade support for and arouse outrage towards Buju.

GLAAD and the signatories to the letter from the Gay Community want tolerance instead of ignorance but they have not led by example.

FOR THE REASONS WHICH I STATED IN MY ABOVE COMMENT, I WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT "MY BROTHER," BUJU ONLINE, IN PRINT, IN THE STREETS AND EVERYWHERE.
