Performances Lost in the Awards Shuffle

The Oscar nominations aren't out yet, but the Golden Globe ones were announced and all the critics' groups have declared their faves, so it's becoming clear who's being royally shafted this year.

These are the best performances that I feel are sadly being pushed under a truck in favor of bigger and/or more publicized names:

Rosamund Pike, An Education. (A very smart performance as a dumb blonde.)

Melanie Laurent, Inglourious Basterds

Paula Patton, Precious. (Remember the nice teacher? Remember?)

Ellen Burstyn, The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond. (An Oscar winner, but without a big campaign or much momentum behind the film.)

Jane Lynch, Julie & Julie. (She can really act!)

And Jim Broadbent, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Don't laugh! I swear he gave the best performance of the year.

Emily Blunt was great in Young Victoria. I think she got a Golden Globe nomination, but I fear she'll be fucked over by Oscar.

Diane Kruger got singled out for a SAG nomination but not Melanie Laurent. Seems like the Oscars could drop either Vera Farmiga or Penelope Cruz and put Penelope in there.

barack obama in the role of a human being says:

since those idiot Norwegians decided to give Barry Obama the Nobel why not give him an Oscar for his performance as trying to seem like a human being -- since he clearly hates and despises gay people and in response to the ugly fascist Danny Glover (who made millions with his gross bigot pal Mel Gibson) who complained Barry did nothing for blacks is to list all the black stars (like Oprah) who still love him! As ever a wheeler-dealer crooked Chicago politician who will do anything to hold onto power -- totally corrupt -- only a piece of dogshit like George Bush could be worse.

CMG says:

Yes! Melanie was the best part outside of Waltz in the film.

Though he got nominated for a SAG, Matt Damon in The Informant! is the award he should be nominated for- not in Invictus (and most definitely over the mimicry of Morgan Freeman).

I also got to agree with the person who mentioned Mackie (and also Brian Geraghty). There was only three of them (including lead actor Jeremy Renner) and I really think that was the best ensemble outside of Inglorious Basterds. All three played those roles perfectly.

I loved Broadbent as Slughorn. He saved the film from being such a mess.

I agree with CMG:
Matt Damon was far better as The Informant!

Matt got a Golden Globe nomination for Informant and a supporting one for Invictus too. Hell probably only get an Oscar nom for Invictus.

What about Nicholas Hoult's "body double" in "A Single Man"? What is that about? WTF??? Did he think showing the buns (and a flat one at that) for two seconds in a gay-directed, gay themed movie was going to hurt his career? That is an award-subtraction for me. Michael, investigate this insane end-credit with Mr. Ford, please! That said, the guy is awfully c-u-t-e!

Posted On: Wednesday, Dec. 23 2009 @ 8:33AM
Troofire says:

I noticed that credit too, and I decided that the body doubles were used in the ocean scenes while the camera crew set the lights and did their thing so the actors didn't have to freeze their asses off. I too thought Nicholas Hoult was cute as hell. He made a terrific movie even more enjoyable.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about Jim Broadbent. I was just watching the 6th Harry Potter film and I loved his performance. So touching, so funny!
