What's Your Favorite De Niro Film?

Before we start this poll, let me tell you about Robert De Niro's latest film, Everybody's Fine.

It has some implausibilities--like, would a retired man with a heart condition really set about traveling all over the place to visit his various children without any advance warning? What if they're not home?

It's also littered with heavy handed symbolism, like how De Niro's character worked all his life in phone wires--i.e., communication--but he HAS none with his family, get it? Also, when a fellow bus passenger tells him a hurricane named Alice is heading up the coast, De Niro wonders what Alice might mean in Greek. "Truth," the woman replies.

Oy.

But De Niro serves his own truth, giving a lovely, understated performance that lifts the film.

It's not my favorite of his, though.

That would have to be Taxi Driver. I mean GoodFellas. I mean Raging Bull. I mean Mean Streets. I mean Cape Fear. I mean The King of Comedy. I mean The Godfather II.

Help me decide! And don't say Rocky and Bullwinkle.

New York, New York! De Niro beating up Liza, Scorcese's coke-fullled movie-within-a-movie, and a jazz-era post-war milieu! love it!

How about FLAWLESS, in which he plays a retired homophobic NYC cop who befriends a drag queen?

Have you ever seen 1900? DeNiro in his early twenties and full frontal. Very nice.

Jonster says:

"Everyone's Fine" sounds like a rehash of "About Schmidt" with Jack Nicholson. He drives a motor home around to see his kids. Nicholson was amazing in that film. I like DeNiro in comedies. I thought he was great in Meet the Parents.

Raging Bull
Taxi Driver

He's above it all. Movies are now beneath him.
NEVER forget 'True Confessions' with Duvall, written by Didion/Dunne...Deniro as a shady priest. It's a forgotten classic.

Wish DeNiro would buy the rights to 'The First Deadly Sin' (an old Sinatra vehicle about a gourmet chef/psychokiller hunter) and deliver a cultural slapdown in 2010...we need it, bad...Darkest before dawn, right?
Right?

Southern Dave says:

Me, too!

"New York, New York."

DeNiro playing all the musicians who beat up Doris Day, Liza playing Doris with Judy's intensity and Sydney Guilaroff playing himself, royal hairburner to the stars...

DeNiro is also quite a bit like Sid Caesar's hipster in this film.

de niro porn tapes says:

check out the widely circulated De Niro porn tapes where he screws more ladies of color than Toger Woods has blondes -- that is, before the prostate cancer put him out of commission. Now like Rudy Giuliani he has reportedly joined the elderly Italian-American incontinence squad. He makes up for it by having endangered species of fish served at Nobu, thereby shitting on the environment.

Seriously, I can't choose. Raging Bull, GoodFellas, Mean Streets, The King of Comedy, Taxi Driver, Cape Fear.......the list goes on and on. All of those chracters from one person is amazing. De Niro is a genius.

windy chimes says:

"Everybody's Fine" is actually a remake of an Italian film of the same name, so it can't really be a rehash of "About Schmidt."

"About Schmidt" obviously ripped off the Italian film.

sizey says:

He's usually on autopilot these days, just doing anything for the money--and the one with Pacino from last year was VILE--but I agree he was quite lovely in "Everybody's FIne. He makes it worth a viewing.

In my humble, it's a four-way tie:

Windy, "About Schmidt" was based on a novel by the same name. Maybe the novel was based on the Italian movie?

Vagino Dickson says:

Don't forget, he was the title character in The Deer Hunter, which for all the liberal teeth-gnashing at the time seems fairly even-handed now, especially in light of the Vietnam War crap that Stallone and Chuck Norris served up afterward. One of those towering strong-but-silent performances that people tend to take for granted, but it hadn't been surpassed for a long time until Daniel Day-Lewis had his turn in There Will Be Blood. (Okay, Catherine Deneuve before that, in Indochine.)
